little bit of a detailed situation, The mom and the dad split up. He has to pay her a certain amount of child support. She's had food stamps, government supplied healthcare and WIC assistance when raising the first child. Now she had another baby with a live-in boyfriend who is transiently employed. She lied to get food stamps, for instance, asking for them when the 2nd father wasn't employeed or when she wasn't employeed herself. Since they do have employment some of the time, she lied. So I know that's fraud, the government could ask her to pay back some portions and even deny her for future assistance. Now, this being said, will the child support being paid by the first father be able to be legally raised if she were denied food stamps (in order to compensate)? We're worried that she'll raise what he's already paying (which is a lot as it is given that we are the ones that clothe the child, provide day care and have extended stays well past what we are expected with her because her mom and her boyfriend are always fighting and breaking up. It's perfectly fine for her to stay with us for as long as she needs a loving place to stay, but the fact that he pays SO much to child support then we end up supporting her is ridiculous. Given her support from the government, the only thing the child support would go to is the mom's gas and rent (which is reduced due to her income to $200 per month and bills are covered partially under an allowance). Ya I know.. that's cheap right? We just wish the money we pay her could go more toward the child and less toward her. We're just worried that if and when she's denied food stamp assistance that his child support will be raised. We're just getting by one what we have and that would really put us in a bind. So here is the truth per Actuaries (the real analysts for those of you not in the know) It’s Not a $950 Billion Plan The Obama administration has gone to great lengths to convince the press that the plan the president released on Monday would cost “only” $950 billion over ten years. At the moment, there’s no Congressional Budget Office (CBO) cost estimate to contradict the White House’s claim. Nor did the administration provide any cost estimate from its own HHS actuaries, even though the actuaries — not the White House press office — are responsible for developing official health-care spending estimates for the administration. An independent estimate from those who do this for a living showing the plan’s cost at $950 billion would have been very convincing. But that presumes the actuaries would agree with the White House assessment, which they almost certainly don’t. Their cost estimates over the past six months have consistently shown the health-care bills developed by Congress would cost much more than advertised, and well over $1 trillion over a decade. Worse from the Obama team’s perspective, the top HHS actuary has used every opportunity handed to him to say unpleasant things about the Democratic reform plans. Like, there’s no “bending of the cost-curve” going on in any them. And national health spending would go up, not down. And the deep and arbitrary Medicare payment-rate reductions that the Democrats are pushing would lead thousands of institutions into financial distress, thus jeopardizing access to care for many seniors. The last thing the Obama White House wants to do right now is hand the actuary a microphone. But CBO never said the Senate bill would cost “only” $871 billion over ten years. That’s Democratic spin. CBO said the cost of the so-called “coverage provisions” would cost $871 billion over a decade. But there’s plenty of other spending in the bill that is not directly related to coverage expansion. Let's be straightforward here, I'm not against health care reform, I am against a universal health care plan adopted from Canada and other countries where it clearly has shortened the life expectancy rate. Clearly the American people did not won't THIS bill, however we do want refom that will actually be effective. By justifying these crimes in their own minds, they dismiss the impact the crimes have on society at large and, in time, come to view the crime as no crime at all. The most obvious modern example of such a crime is illegal immigration. Proponents of illegal immigration justify their position in several ways. First, they suggest that illegal immigration is a “victimless crime” and, therefore, should not be considered a crime at all. However, this assertion is prima facie or, “on it’s face,” false. Some parts of America are actually being ravaged by crimes committed by illegal immigrants – their crimes ranging from simple assaults and batteries to more serious offenses including burglary, armed robbery, drug-trafficking and murder. Second, supporters of illegal immigration purport that “illegals” support the economy by performing tasks that American citizens simply won’t do. This assertion, too, is false to a significant degree. The influx of illegal immigrant labor acts to disrupt the normal economic factors affecting certain labor markets. An abundance of cheap labor artificially deflates wages in certain industries – in particular, agriculture, construction, landscaping, and food service. By utilizing illegal immigrant labor, employers, then, manage to get away with paying a lower wage and, therefore, pocket a higher profit. Absent a supply of cheap labor, these employers would be forced to offer higher wages to attract workers with the result being that a greater percentage of American citizens would find the higher wage levels more attractive and therefore seek such employment. In addition, American workers taking these jobs would pay income taxes unlike their illegal immigrant counterparts. Further, income earned by American workers tends to be spent in America which benefits the economy as a whole. On the other hand, a very large percentage of illegal immigrant income is sent out of the United States which serves to deflate the economy much like air leaking from a tire. Third, those who support illegal immigration rail that America is a land of unlimited resources and, therefore, shouldn’t oppose the influx of millions of illegals. This, too, couldn’t be further from the truth. No doubt the United States is a nation blessed with resources and opportunities. However, there are limits. In many parts of America, the demand placed on the infrastructure by a growing population of legal Americans is already exceeding capacity. The addition of millions of illegal immigrants merely exacerbates this problem. Neither Haiti nor the world was properly equipped for this, and tens of thousands will die needlessly. The world’s emergency-response systems – especially for impoverished countries in zones that are vulnerable to earthquakes, volcanoes, droughts, hurricanes, and floods – needs upgrading. After just a month or so, the emergency phase will give way to a decades-long struggle for recovery and long-term development. First, special efforts should be made to boost peasant agriculture and rural communities. Large-scale capital investment will also be needed to re-equip the ports and to re-establish a power grid. Recovery will also require re-establishing at least a small-scale manufacturing sector. Haiti, like its next-door neighbour, the Dominican Republic, once created jobs in port facilities, including production of clothing, baseballs, and other light-manufacturing items. Those jobs disappeared in the 1990’s, when the US imposed a trade embargo on Haiti as part of an effort to re-establish democracy. Democracy returned, but the economy was destroyed. Other countries have risen from the rubble of natural disaster and war, and Haitican do the same over the next five to 10 years. My fiance and I are about to get married. Im 9 weeks pregnant. Though there were most certainly exceptions, in general, it seemed to me as though most criminals eventually paid for their crimes. And back then, it also seemed to me that most people believed that’s the way it should be. Boy, how things have changed. Nowadays, there appears to be a growing number of people who believe criminals should not have to pay for certain crimes. By justifying these crimes in their own minds, they dismiss the impact the crimes have on society at large and, in time, come to view the crime as no crime at all. The most obvious modern example of such a crime is illegal immigration. Proponents of illegal immigration justify their position in several ways. First, they suggest that illegal immigration is a “victimless crime” and, therefore, should not be considered a crime at all. However, this assertion is prima facie or, “on it’s face,” false. Some parts of America are actually being ravaged by crimes committed by illegal immigrants – their crimes ranging from simple assaults and batteries to more serious offenses including burglary, armed robbery, drug-trafficking and murder. Second, supporters of illegal immigration purport that “illegals” support the economy by performing tasks that American citizens simply won’t do. This assertion, too, is false to a significant degree. The influx of illegal immigrant labor acts to disrupt the normal economic factors affecting certain labor markets. An abundance of cheap labor artificially deflates wages in certain industries – in particular, agriculture, construction, landscaping, and food service. By utilizing illegal immigrant labor, employers, then, manage to get away with paying a lower wage and, therefore, pocket a higher profit. Absent a supply of cheap labor, these employers would be forced to offer higher wages to attract workers with the result being that a greater percentage of American citizens would find the higher wage levels more attractive and therefore seek such employment. In addition, American workers taking these jobs would pay income taxes unlike their illegal immigrant counterparts. Further, income earned by American workers tends to be spent in America which benefits the economy as a whole. On the other hand, a very large percentage of illegal immigrant income is sent out of the United States which serves to deflate the economy much like air leaking from a tire. Third, those who support illegal immigration rail that America is a land of unlimited resources and, therefore, shouldn’t oppose the influx of millions of illegals. This, too, couldn’t be further from the truth. No doubt the United States is a nation blessed with resources and opportunities. However, there are limits. In many parts of America, the demand placed on the infrastructure by a growing population of legal Americans is already exceeding capacity. The addition of millions of illegal immigrants merely exacerbates this problem. Many sectors of the American economy are being crushed by the weigh of excessive demand placed upon them by illegal immigrants – in particular, the healthcare industry. America’s emergency rooms are filled with illegal immigrants seeking care for which they are seldom able to pay. The cost of this care, then, is shifted onto the backs of productive Americans who are forced to pay more and more for their healthcare as the unpaid costs are spread across the industry. Despite all the economic problems attributable to illegal immigration in this country, there is an even more damaging side effect – the total disregard for the law by the illegals. As more and more illegal immigrants ignore the law and as less and less is done about it by the proper authorities, respect for the rule of law become less and less in a general sense among both illegals and, most ominously, by some Americans themselves. Diminished respect for the law among both criminals and average citizens serves to embolden criminals to engage in further criminal activity, thus diminishing the quality of life for all Americans. No one I know personally believes legal immigration should be eliminated (though I do believe America’s immigration policies should be reviewed and revised with reduced allowances). Real Americans, by nature, are accepting and generous. But illegal immigration is something different. It isn’t a benign act by a few downtrodden individuals seeking to better their lot in life. As I type this, I'm sitting behind the console of GE Healthcare's 64 slice VCT Scanner. It's slow in the ER right now, so I can dick off on the internet for a bit. I hear all of this talk about how we "pay for everyone's healthcare who don't have insurance." This premise is laughable. No we do not. That is a lie from the left. The hospital simply writes it off. It has little effect on the cost of services. But..... I'll tell you what is a driving force behind increasing costs for patients. The cost of an Abdomen and Pelvis CT with IV contrast is around $2000 at my facility. Why? Because the aforementioned CT scanner's price tag is a cool $1 million. The yearly service contract runs about $100k and supplies run another $250k. The scanner is a money maker for sure. One of the hospital's greatest sources of revenue.... but why does it cost so much? Because aside from the cost to operate, the CT must make up the difference for those areas that operate at a loss. The ER? Nah, they pretty much break even, even though that's where the uninsured go. Inpatients? Nah, they actually are in the black. (just barely) Where then? ......hmmmmm.... 40% of this facility's loss in accrued by things like occupational therapy, drug rehab, corporate compliance, idiotic mandates, liability insurance and claims, employee entitlements.... etc. It is NOT. Let me repeat that.... NOT because of the uninsured. oops, well I just got an order from the ER for an abdomen/pelvis CT. It seems the guy has a stomach ache and a history of diverticulitis. We already know what's wrong with him.... but hey, let's do a CT so we don't get sued in case we're wrong. It could be an aneurysm I suppose..... at any rate medicaid will pay us $212.00 for the scan.....christ......JA N, yes, you are correct. The cost is the same. 30 minutes of my time plus electricity comes to about $25.00 in real costs to the hospital for the CT.
