Only equipment, no laboratory

Source: www.tops.lk --- Sunday, August 15, 2010
There is no science laboratory at Kelanigama Vidyalaya in the Hatton Education Zone in the Nuwara Eliya district. Although the Central Provincial Education Department has appointed a science teacher and provided science equipment for school, the absence of a science laboratory has caused the school authorities to store them in the principal's office. The rural school's science teacher is compelled to take these science equipment from the principal's office to the classes everyday for experiments relevant to their science lessons. The school development society appeals to the educational authorities to take steps to meet the need of a science laboratory which is a long-felt need for the Kelanigama Vidyalaya. Resolved Question: Cryptic Dream: Can you decipher it?

This dream occurred some while ago: I was walking in the woods and suddenly the soil under my feet was crumbling. I slithered down for a few seconds and found myself in a strange sort of underground complex. At first sight it appeared to be abandoned, with roots penetrating the concrete walls and ceiling and small ponds of water accumulating beneath them. Strangely enough, a diffuse light, of which i could not figure out the source, gently illuminated the scene. As i walked through these tunnels, i became more and more convinced that this environment must be still in use. I could see a few vents here and there, still moving and buzzing. But on top of these noises, there was a strange humming, very high and hardly to hear. I decided to follow this sound to see where it originated. Finally i arrived at a large bulkhead door. My curiosity to discover what may be behind that door was strong enough to make me turn the wheel handle without hesitation. I entered the room, which was in contrast to the rest of the complex shrouded in darkness. A small flickering light above a desk in the center of the room was the only sign of interference. Although a diffuse paranoid fear slowly creeped into my mind, i decided to approach the desk and read some of the papers which lay scattered around on it. But when i almost got close enough to be able to read anything i felt a pain on my head and the darkness became permanent and all the small noises disappeared. Hours must have passed when gradually my vision returned. I could make out the silhouette of a shady human figure standing in front of me, gesticulating. A greenish colour shed light on the background, which consisted of laboratory equipment. Now, also my sense of hearing seemed to be fading in again. It must be blamed on my dizziness that it took me a few minutes to fully understand and answer my interrogator. Of course he wanted to hear who i was and how i got here. After telling my little story he helped me on my feet again. He placed me into an armchair standing in a neighboring room and sat himself down on a couch. I wanted to know what he is doing down here, underground. During the conversation it turned out that this man was nobody else than Ivan Pavlov. He told me that his current research project was too dangerous and morally questionable to be performed officially. Understandably, i was eager to know what he was up to and after a few minutes of talk he finally came forth with the subject of his research. With a mysterious sense of accomplishment he explained that his project was about the conditioning of children. [Now comes the most cryptic part] He went on to avouch that he made an amazing discovery, a method so foolproof and easy to perform, so hard to detect, that every nation on the planet would soon apply it. All he needed was: A small tortoise and a noticeably larger tortoise interacting and reflecting on it. Then Pavlov said even more secretively, their reflections would not originate from themselves, but from a third, age-old and hidden tortoise, which he takes care of and has conversations with in his underground facility. . . . Now... what do you think this odd dream is all about? more

Resolved Question: If I operate an illegal enterprise, are the business expenses still tax deductible?

This is an entirely serious question. Let's say I operate an illegal enterprise, such as a meth laboratory or an illegal gambling operation. Does the law allow me deduct those reasonable business expenses incurred in operating those illegal enterprises, provided that I report all illegal income obtained from those same enterprises? Or does the IRS only require that I report the income, but it does not permit me to deduct expenses because the enterprises are illegal? I understand that if I make payoffs to law enforcement personnel, those payments would not be tax deductible in any event because the tax code does not permit deductions for kickbacks or bribes, and such payments would be deemed to fall in one of those categories. But how about other business expenses, such as the meth lab equipment, drug supplies, transportation costs, etc.?'I appreciate the responses, but could someone support their positions with some reference to the IRS code if possible. For example, bribes or kickbacks aren't deductible because “No deduction is allowed for any payment made directly or indirectly to any person if the payment is a bribe, kickback, or other illegal payment under any U.S. law or under any generally enforced state law that subjects the payor to a criminal penalty or to the loss of license or privilege to engage in a trade or business.” (Code Sec. 162(c)(2); Reg. §1.162-18.) But this rule does not seem to apply to other business expenses that would be incurred, such as equipment, rent, transportation, etc. Thanks for your insights. more

Resolved Question: Can you please help proofread my letter? It's for a business communication class?

Thanks in advance. DATE: August 10, 2010 TO: Dr. Rahim Shah, Director of Special Laboratories, State University Agricultural Research institute, Hadley Hall, Room 148 From: Astrid Morales, Laboratory Technician, Insect Diagnostic Laboratory The labs at the State University Agricultural Institute have been collaborating together by borrowing equipment to each other. On Monday, the Agricultural science borrowed a pH meter from Soil science center. As the knob on the meter was been turned from “stand by” to “pH,” the meter register no change. After the battery was check to verify that it was working properly, than the electrode was checked, it appears to work. It was tried again, but the meter would not work. So a careful look over the electrode showed that the fluid level was okay. However, a hairline crack was discovered. The pH meter was broken. After discovering that the pH meter was not working, it was brought back to the Soil Science Center. Carole Levita, the principal assistant of Soil Science Canter, received and it was mention to her that the meter was broken. She did not say anything and she accepted the pH meter, so the Agricultural science lab did not make a big deal out of it. However, Dr. Mack Moley, Director of the Soil Science Center, called soon after he found out about the pH meter. He believes that the Agricultural Science center broke the instrument because no one else reported it broken. The Agricultural science lab reassures that the pH meter was not functioning properly and it was already broken. Since the meter was brought back malfunctioning, He expects that the lab will pay for the broken equipment and the cost is a thousand dollars. The best interest for the labs is to continue cooperating and sharing equipment to keep on working together. The Agricultural Science lab proposes to pay for part of the pH meter cost since it is an important tool for both labs. It is true that the piece of equipment is expensive, but the benefits outweigh the cost, the laboratories conduct research and also do services testing thus citizens bring soil samples or twigs from diseased trees for analysis. Furthermore, the Agricultural Science lab understands that the money could have been use for the buying of new equipment for another facility unit, but it is very important to keep the “borrowing system going.” This borrowing system has allowed the lab to function effectively. Sincerely, John Smith more

Resolved Question: Who will join hands in our fight to save the nature from poison of GM plants?

We at Save Farmer Movement are appealing each and every one to help in the great cause of documentation of deadly effects GM plants like BT cotton. Who is going to sponsor the research on how to save human race now? We am studying ill effects of Genetically Modified (GM) Plants on Humans, Animals and Environment. We have discovered GM plants are killing animals on large scale. But not government agency is willing to accept or even notice it. Now from here with out any govt /private /charity support how would we do this. If we do it with other work for my subsistence then I do not get time for the research. How many of you would guide/help me? What would you have done if you were in my place? Would you have left an important research on which the future of human race depended? May I request you all to donate at least 1 Dollar from you pocket to support my research. or If You may not want to donate you can help in many other ways like 1. Demand non GM food from where ever you going market/friends' home 2. Forward this information in true faith to friends 3. Do not buy shares of companies dealing directly or indirectly with GM plants/foods 4. Do not do business/job with such companies 5. He said that animals were dying or coming under the toxic grip of BT Cotton allergy and possibly poisoning. He said, “Evidence of presence of Hydrogen Cranide (HCN) have come from government laboratories in the state of Andhra Pradesh State (India), where thousands of sheep perished after feeding on BT Cotton some years back.” Dr Kaura said that buffaloes perish over many months compare to sheep. “Ill effects of BT Cotton include difficulty in conceiving properly, giving birth to significantly smaller sized offsprings, protrusion of uterus, allergy symptoms on skin, reduction in milk (10% in one week in some cases), dysfunction of teats, and others,” he said. “The taste of the milk from buffaloes who are fed BT Cotton, has changed. So, many people have stopped taking milk or milk products.” Dr Kaura said he was worried ‘about people, especially children who work at BT Cotton farms, as many are experiencing allergy symptoms such as boils, itching, redness, white patches, and others. He warned that if the government did not stop BT Cotton from being fed to animals, the small and marginal farmer economy which is basically driven by milk, would soon be shattered.Dear Harmony19, please note that bt cotton has been found to kill animals by government in india and govt lab. in India has found prensence of hydrogen cyanide. Resolved Question: Does buying a used EMF protector still work?

I'm looking to buy a used gold beryllium pendant and was wondering if the last person's energy will resonate within the pendant still. Search "gold beryllium" on Ebay. This is what the maker claims. But I think it's just so people won't resell it. ATTENTION : Energy Alignment Matrix Set To Zero This is a BRAND NEW energy pendant which has NOT been exposed to any human IDENT energy. Zero Point Research intentionally reset the energy matrix of each of these powerful Orgone pendants to ZERO with special equipment found only in their Laboratory. This insures that when you receive your pendant it will be PURE and UNTAINTED from the energy frequencies given off by other humans. If this were not done and another person handled it before you for more than a day, then the pendant resonance frequency would align to someone other than yourself and would NEVER realign to your energies and give you the full benefits. Zero Point Research and Sacred Soils has taken very special precautions to preserve the energetic integrity of these devices. Therefore, PLEASE read your instruction book and follow the instructions concerned with the use and care of this rare device. Once it is set to resonate with your energy, it can never be used by anyone else! more

Voting Question: What is the title of this movie?

Nearly a decade ago, I saw a movie on television but never looked to see what the title of the movie was. Since I saw the movie I've been trying to see it again, but without a title it's very hard to get a copy of the film. Hopefully I can convey what the movie was about (as best as I can remember) and someone will know what I'm talking about. So here goes: There is a government lab in the middle of the desert that does experiments on human beings (I believe to create a stronger soldier). During the experiment the 'patient' wakes up and kills all of the surgeons. Meanwhile, a scientist (who either quit or retired) shows up to collect his stuff; he also brings along his son, daughter, and the daughter's boyfriend. Eventually the 'patient' escapes the operating room and destroys a lot of the security equipment and generators. The family is now locked in this underground laboratory. Eventually the 'patient' and family meet and all kinds of action ensues. Now the family is trying to escape. A few key things I remember are that the 'patient' does not like the sound of a microwave buzzer, HE is extremely strong, and throughout the movie his body goes through some slow mutation. During one of the attempts to escape the daughter's boyfriend is killed by the 'patient' after his neck is snapped. Eventually the family escapes the underground laboratory, board a plane, and fly away; unfortunately, the 'patient' in on the plane. He is eventually knocked off (or out of) the plane and hits the ground. At the very end of the movie, the camera zooms in on the body of the 'patient' and just before it cuts to the credits, his body twitches. Hopefully someone will know what the title of this movie is because I would really like to see it again.I believe I saw this movie on SyFy (SciFi) if that is any help.Figured out the name of the movie. It was Mind Ripper (The Outpost). Looking over some youtube video, I now realize how bad this movie was. It is amazing how good a bad movie seems to a 12-year-old kid. more

Resolved Question: Can you take this information and turn it into a speech?

Can you turn this into a speech for me? Product: The Eco-spray and Paper Flattener Raw Materials: corn, wheat or sugar beet for biodegradable spray bottle and for the Paper Flattener. This is made out of Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) that comes from the starch of rich plants such as sugar beet, corn and wheat. This goes through a fermentation and condensation process to create the Poly Lactic Acid. Ink removable spray substance (Eco-spray) is to be invented. Power source: Any source of energy will do. We can use electricity from nuclear energy, solar energy, fossil fuels, wind energy or whatever to run laboratory equipment. As a result we can use the kinetic energy of the wind to create clean energy for the laboratory equipment/processing. Transportation: Since we decided to have all of the manufacturing process and distribution stores to be in Canada, the best and cheapest way to distribute them is by Transport trucks. This way we can transport raw materials to our manufacturing industry and taking the finished product to different franchised stores. Location: These are the factors of where we should locate our factory and why: 1.Close to where we get our raw materials for the product – If our factory is near the locations in which we get the raw materials, than the distance of transporting it to the factory would be closer. This way we can save money and time by transporting it a shorter distance rather than long. 2.Sufficiently windy places exposed high areas, like hills or small mountains for wind turbines to create energy for factory – To create energy for the factory we need wind turbines near the factory. Therefore the location of the factory should be open high areas for enough wind to create energy. 3.Near roads for transport trucks to come in and out of the factory area – It would be easier to have roads near the factory so the raw materials can be transported directed to the factory, rather than having people move them from a far distance to the factory. Resolved Question: Walton Medical Laboratory?

Margaret Walton spent 10 years working in the laboratory at City Hospital. During that time, she advanced to the position of director of the laboratory and completed an MBA degree. She felt that opportunities for further advancement at the hospital were limited and was looking for a new challenge. She took a course in entrepreneurship and was fascinated by the idea of starting her own business. Walton decided that she would open an independent laboratory to provide medical tests for independent medical practices. She believed that she could help physicians reduce both their capital requirements and administrative chores, as well as provide more accurate testing. Walton began assembling information. She discovered a piece of land available near a number of independent medical practices. The land could be purchased for $100,000, and a suitable building would cost approximately $400,000. The building would have a useful life of approximately 40 years. Laboratory equipment would cost $1 million. The equipment would have a life of 7 years for tax purposes, but would actually last 10 years. Although the business could continue indefinitely, Walton wanted to do the analysis based on the assumption of a life similar to that of the laboratory equipment:10 years. In addition to fixed asses, working capital such as cash, supplies, receivables, and payables would be needed. Walton wanted to maintain a minimum cash balance of $20,000. She estimated that $100,000 of supplies would be needed initially, and accounts payable at $40,000. She estimated that the cash, supplies, receivables, and payables categories would double at the end of the first year and would not increase thereafter. Walton predicted revenue of $600,000 during the first year and $1,200,000 each year thereafter. She estimated that labor expenses, including a salary for her equal to what she was now earning, of $300,000 in the firs year and $480,000 each year thereafter. She estimated a supplies expense of $120,000 in the first year and $190,000 each year thereafter. SHe estimated overhead expense, other than depreciation, of $100,000 a year. Looking ahead, Walton estimated that the equipment would have a negligible value in 10 years, while the building would have lost one-fourth of tits value and the land 1 would still be worth $100,000. She guessed that supplies inventory could be sold for half its cost, and other working capital items would be settled at their book values. Walton turned her attention to financing. She had limited capital of her own and would need to seek outside investors. She had heard enough horror stories about problems that occurred when companies could not make payments on debts, and she wanted to avoid those troubles. Thus, she wanted to try to arrange all equity financing, and use a bank line of credit only for temporary needs. Walton decided on a plan involving ten wealthy investors, preferably senior retired physicians who would then serve on the board of directors. She would fund the project by creating eleven shares – one share free to herself as a founder’s share and one share to each of the investors. Each investor would then invest 10 percent of the capital requirements. Walton tentatively discussed the project with several senior retire physicians to see what would be required. They viewed this as an investment of moderate risk and indicated that they would want a 12 percent after tax return from an investment of this type. While several investors encourages her to continue, they were naturally unwilling to make a commitment without a proposal and a thorough financial analysis. Walton began to develop a profitability analysis and a proposal. She had to choose between the corporate tax form and an S form. She estimated that most investors would be in 28 percent tax brackets. All funds not needed internally would be paid out to the shareholders. She thought she could be ready to start by the first of the year, so assets would be considered placed in service in January. Case questions 1. Identify all cash flow on the assumption the business is taxed at a 28 percent tax rate. 2. Prepare a net present value analysis. 3. Does this investment provide a satisfactory rate of return to investors? 4. Is it fair and reasonable for Walton to get one-eleventh of the company without putting up equity capital of her own? more

Resolved Question: Where are America’s Loose Nukes?

Where are America’s Loose Nukes? By Grant Smith April 14, 2010 "Antiwar" -- Israel decided this week to send Minister for Intelligence Affairs Dan Meridor to the Nuclear Security summit. This U.S. bid to secure vulnerable nuclear stockpiles against non-state actors is both closely watched and furiously spun. Israel avoided exposing Prime Minister Netanyahu to embarrassing scrutiny of Israel’s clandestine nuclear weapons arsenal. For this reason, trumpets the New York Times, Israel sent a lower-level delegation. But Israel has long responded defiantly to threats of robust U.S. oversight. A long-running investigation into how weapons-grade uranium went missing from Pennsylvania illustrates why America has been incapable of securing its own nuclear materials and know-how from insider threats. The future of that uranium may determine the success or failure of the Obama administration’s non-proliferation effort. Steve Levin was a member of the underground Haganah – a precursor to the Israel Defense Forces – and fought during Israel’s 1948 war under Meir Amit, who later became head of Israeli intelligence. Levin was a close friend of David Ben-Gurion, the first prime minister of Israel. In the mid-1940s while leading the Jewish Agency, Ben-Gurion launched a massive clandestine conventional arms financing, theft, and smuggling network [.pdf] in the United States diverting to Palestine small arms, heavy machine guns, munitions-making equipment, aircraft, ships, and tanks destined for American scrap yards after World War II. On the nuclear front, Levin financed the purchase of the Apollo Steel Company facility in Pennsylvania for $450,000. Founder and President Dr. Zalman M. Shapiro, a genius inventor and head of a local Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) chapter, incorporated the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation (NUMEC) at Apollo in 1956. Levin capitalized NUMEC through a stock offering in 1957 and business took off – propelled by the critical knowledge of highly talented scientists. NUMEC co-founder Dr. Leonard P. Pepkowitz previously worked on the clandestine Manhattan Project in 1944 producing America’s first atomic bombs. Pepkowitz later led analytical chemistry research at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. NUMEC regularly received large quantities of highly enriched uranium and plutonium from industry giants Westinghouse and the U.S. Navy for reprocessing into nuclear submarine fuel and other specialty uses. Shapiro was meticulous in his stewardship of the company’s financial resources, carefully shopping around for banks willing to accommodate the complex demands of the fast growing NUMEC. There is better maternal nutrition and antenatal care resulting in improved myelination. b. Infants participating in contemporary research are more representative of infants of a particular age-group. c. Young children today are more likely to attend day-care and receive early exposure to childhood education. d. Laboratory equipment and improved methodologies have allowed measurement of more primitive response modes.haha, i am actually doing a case study on peoples behaviours when asked many questions at once. We've found that generally if people do not need to answer they would prefer not to be bothered with any at all or give up half way through. There are not many people of this day and age who arrise to challenges if they do not have to. And if we're to find a handful that do we need discuss how they worked the list of questions, whether did the ones they knew already then moved on to think over the rest or worked down the list one at a time whether the answer was known or not. had many people who just show sarcastic behaviour or disregard what is being asked. which is what we have here so far. Resolved Question: Does a Linux exist for "primitive" touchscreen Devices?

So, I bought this old omnisens PPC - 120T - EW - RT from my company This machine is about the size of an old fat LCD It has a ~8" contact touchscreen (the type with two layers over the screen) I have a groovy media center in mind (like, instead of buying a fancy shmancy ready-made touchscreen hi-def blah blah, and I could even rig it up all steampunk style, dig?) I will add a decent PCI soundcard & hook up an external HD to use it as a music system. The windows2000 on it seems a bit crappy and I'm sure it uses more ressources than a Linux would, plus there's an old measurement software on it since it was once laboratory equipment. What would be a reasonable Linux distribution that would work well with such a touchscreen? Or where could I find a driver for such a device? thank you :) more

Voting Question: I'm having so much trouble in lab, it's depressing and it's haunting me...?

I'm taking a chemistry laboratory course, and even after reading the procedure thoroughly before coming to class, I seem to be so confused in the lab. It seems like the procedure suddenly changes from what I read from the book the night before. I'm terrible at handling equipment--I can't seem to understand where stuff goes, or how to do things. Worse, the labs are long, there's a time limit, and we have to finish before the time limit. I would talk to my TA about this, but she doesn't speak English, gets mad at me every time I ask her a question, and gives me this "oh you're so stupid" look. What's even better is that my professor is exactly the same way and loves to yell at her students. I don't know what to do. I failed the first lab report. I understood what the experiment was about so I got full credit on the lab report, but lost a ton of points because my data made no sense. And that's because I'm so terrible at handling equipment! I once accidentally knocked over a whole solution of diethyl ether--that's how incompetent I am. So what can I do to fix this? Should I just switch majors? I hate that thought, because I actually genuinely like biology...and that's what my major is. Or should I just muster up the courage to talk to my TA, and see if she's willing to understand? more
