Medical Equipment Surgical Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: What is your thoughts on The Red Cross gives first aid lessons to Taliban?

The Red Cross in Afghanistan has been teaching the Taliban basic first aid and giving insurgents medical equipment so that fighters wounded during battles with Nato and Afghan government forces can be treated in the field, it was revealed today. More than 70 members of the "armed opposition" received training in April, the Red Cross said – a move likely to anger the government of Hamid Karzai, which is losing large numbers of police and soldiers in insurgent attacks. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it had introduced the classes because pitched battles, landmines and roadblocks stopped people in the most volatile areas from getting to hospital. The Red Cross, which aims to remain neutral in the conflict, has trained more than 100 Afghan soldiers and policemen, as well as a network of taxi drivers who operate an unofficial ambulance service in Helmand and Kandahar provinces. Today, a leading figure in Kandahar's local government, who wanted to remain anonymous, said the Taliban did "not deserve to be treated like humans". He said: "They are like animals, and they treat the people they capture worse than animals. They kidnapped and killed an American lady and then wouldn't even return her body. These people don't deserve this help." The Afghan ministries of defence and the interior said they were unable to comment on what they described as a highly controversial issue. A Nato spokesman in Kabul said: "Nato has tremendous respect for the humanitarian work carried out by the ICRC and we recognise the need for this work to be carried out impartially. "Isaf [Nato] forces also provide treatment to any case caught up in this conflict, including our opponents, in line with our own obligation to respect the rules of armed conflict." One of the ICRC-trained drivers, who transports sick and wounded people from Sangin district in Helmand, where some of the most fierce fighting is taking place, to Mirwais hospital in Kandahar city, told the ICRC that roadblocks and insecurity had lengthened the journey to six or seven hours, rather than the normal two. The extraordinary measure highlights how badly security has declined in southern Afghanistan, undermining this summer's effort by US-led forces to protect the population from violence. The ICRC said its volunteers in Kandahar and staff at Mirwais hospital had seen a "substantial increase" in the number of patients injured by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other weapons. Critics of the Nato push in southern Afghanistan, which is aimed at seizing full control of Kandahar city and central Helmand from the Taliban by the end of the year, said that coalition commanders had made the situation worse by publicising where they were going to launch assaults. By discussing publicly their plans in February for clearing the largely rural area of Marja in Helmand and then their desire to "clear" districts surrounding Kandahar city, Nato hoped many insurgents would simply choose not to fight. But in many cases, the move gave the Taliban time to dig in and plant IEDS in the areas. For years the beds at Mirwais hospital have been regularly filled with men with gunshot wounds, many of whom are insurgents. But ICRC staff, who support the work of the hospital, have learned not to ask questions about how they sustained their injuries. In general the government has been happy to allow fighters to come to the hospital, receive treatment and leave again. But in Helmand in April, the tacit approval for such humanitarian medical support appeared to break down when Afghan security services raided a hospital in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital, run by an Italian NGO called Emergency, which also has a strict policy of providing surgical help to anyone who needs it. Nine staff were arrested and accused of plotting to murder the provincial governor after weapons and suicide bomb vests were found in the compound. The International Committee of the Red Cross runs hospitals in Afghanistan, visits prisoners on both sides of the conflict and co-operates on various projects with the Afghan Red Crescent Society, a separate organisation, on various projects. more

Resolved Question: What are the chances of someone surviving this scenario?

If someone was shot through the chest with several 7.62x54mmR expanding bullets [and it collapsed both of their lungs and severed several major arteries], or if they were shot through the gut several times with the same type of bullet [and it blew out their kidneys, liver, and parts of their intestines and stomach; and severed several major arteries], what are their chances of survival if there was a team of extremely qualified combat surgeons [i.e- they had been through several years of medical school [with doctorates in anatomy, physiology, etc.], and had many years of combat experiance and could work VERY quickly in extremely stressful battlefield situations] with the most modern equipment [including, but not limited to, powerful antibiotics, extremely complex surgical tools, the new type of "plasma knife" that the military is developing; which both cuts and cauterizes at the same time, PerClot [a new clotting agent which clots arteries within half a second and is used to stop bleeding in extreme cases [such as the severing of the aortal artery and open-heart surgery]], diolysis machines; defribrilators, artificial lungs, hearts, livers, intestines, stomachs, and kidneys, [as well as all other artificial organs necessary for such a wound], and ALL of the most advanced; top-of-the-line medical equipment ever designed for such a wound], and there was a med-EVAC helicopter waiting to evacuate the injured soldier to a combat hospital with ALL of the MOST advanced, state of the art equipment ever designed, as well as many extremely qualified teams of surgeons working in sterile, hospital conditions [such as hospital rooms, beds, etc.]; and assuming the soldier was big, muscular, and strong, with an extremely strong immune/muscular system capable of healing relatively rapidly, what would be said soldier's chances of survival? Also, assume that the surgeons got on the soldier almost INSTANTLY, so almost no time [i.e- like half a second] passed between the soldier being shot and the surgeons starting the operation. more

Resolved Question: What's going to happen when the US gets its own Health Scare System?

HERE'S WHAT ONE CANADIAN WHO IS IN THE MEDICAL FIELD HAD TO SAY ABOUT THEIR MEDICAL CARE: "I lived in a socialist medicine country (Canada) There the employers pay premiums to the health care plan. If your employer does not pay, you have to pay. $80.00 a month for a single person every month. It is illegal NOT to have coverage. A small family of three pays about $100 a month. But low income, welfare people pay nothing. They get everything free, abortions, drugs, needles for their heroin addiction, methadone, hospital stays. You name it, they get it courtesy of the health care plan. And boy do they use it. I have seen welfare people coming in to hospital with their suitcases packed and all their junk with them and all sorts of vague maladies. Turns out they got kicked out of their apartment and they need a place to stay until their check comes in. Doctor does not mind. That's how he makes his money. The ER is plugged with welfare types coming in with sniffy noses, sore throats etc. Also the ones looking for free narcotics for their addictions. Oops! Did I say free? It's not free. It costs the taxpayer zillions. So much they have to shut down ERs, increase surgical wait lists, not buy equipment etc. Why else do you think Canadians flock to the states for health care?"" Can you visualize now what's going to happen when our US Health Scare system comes into force??? more

Resolved Question: Do you think Obama will keep his promise of "no pork" by vetoing the spending bill being passed in Congress?

Republicans and taxpayer watchdogs are railing against the thousands of earmarks included in the omnibus spending bill that passed the House Thursday and is awaiting a vote in the Senate. Republicans and tax watchdog groups are railing against the thousands of earmarks included in the omnibus spending bill that the House passed Thursday and is awaiting a vote in the Senate. The $1.1 trillion bill includes $447 billion in operating budgets for 10 Cabinet departments. Mixed in are more than 5,000 earmarks totaling $3.9 billion, according to watchdog Taxpayers for Common Sense. Pork-watchers are only just beginning to sort through the earmarks, which typically are goodies set aside for the districts of members of Congress, as the bill tracks toward a final vote. So far, they've uncovered gems ranging from $700,000 for a shrimp fishing project in Maryland to $30,000 for the Woodstock Film Festival Youth Initiative to $200,000 for a visitor's center in a Texas town with a population of about 8,000. "Let's stop the madness," House Republican Leader John Boehner said, before the bill passed without any GOP support. Twenty-eight House Democrats also opposed it. House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., wrote to President Obama urging him to veto the bill, and pledging that Republicans would stand by him if he did. Obama in March waved off controversy over a $410 billion spending bill that also was riddled with earmarks, arguing that it represented "last year's business." This time around, Boehner said, the president needs to crack down on the pork under his watch. Republicans, though, have hardly shied away from the earmarks. Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss., is pushing $200,000 for the Washington National Opera. Sen. Judd Gregg, a fiscal hawk, is behind a $1 million earmark for renovation at the Portsmouth Music Hall. Taxpayers for Common Sense reports a total of 5,224 earmarks in the 2010 spending bill, which also includes funding for Medicare and Medicaid. Groups like Citizens Against Government Waste, as well as Sen. John McCain's staff, have drawn attention to dozens of items they consider questionable. Here's just a sampling: -- $150,000 for educational programs and exhibitions at the National Building Museum. -- $400,000 for renovation of the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. -- $150,000 for exhibits at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site Foundation in Buffalo, N.Y. -- $500,000 for Mississippi River exhibits at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa. -- $200,000 for the Washington National Opera. -- $30,000 for the Woodstock Film Festival Youth Initiative. -- $2.7 million for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, to support surgical operations in space. -- $200,000 for a visitor's center in Bastrop, Texas. -- $700,000 for a project called, "Shrimp Industry Fishing Effort Research Continuation," at the National Marine Fisheries Service in Silver Spring, Md. -- $292,200 for the elimination of blight in Scranton, Pa. -- $750,000 for exhibits at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates in Iowa. -- $1.6 million for a tram between the Marshall Flight Center and Huntsville Botanical Garden in Alabama. -- $655,000 for equipment at the Institute for Irritable Bowel Syndrome Research in Los Angeles. Republicans have been on a tear over earmarks and excessive spending over the past week, particularly as Congress prepares to take up a new jobs-creation package and raise the debt ceiling by nearly $2 trillion. Rep. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., and Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga., on Thursday named what they called the 11 most wasteful spending projects considered by Congress so far this year. On Wednesday, four Republican lawmakers demanded an audit of the $787 billion stimulus program following reports of exaggerated or inaccurate accounts of the number of jobs created. McCain, R-Ariz., and Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., on Tuesday released a report on 100 "questionable" stimulus projects worth nearly $7 billion. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/12/11/watchdogs-foul-thousands-earmarks-spending/ more

Resolved Question: Medical care in the ancient world?

What kind of medicine and surgical equipment was available in the late bronze age? I understand that generally ancient people applied supernatural explanations for illness, but there were certainly times of innovation throughout human history where people tried alternative remedies, why there are (sadly) trepanation drills dating back to the stone age! About 1300 BC would be a good starting point. I'm especially interested in what would have been considered the latest and most "state-of-the-art" additions of the day to the ancient medicine cabinet. And I'd like to see what was going on in any part of the world at this time, Asia, Europe, Africa. Thanks for your help P.S I'm writing a story! more

Resolved Question: what do you think of the start of my essay?

Was Egyptian medicine an important step forward? In today’s society, medicine is created by a world of computers and cutting edge technology but from the roots of medicine merged remedies and treatments that are still used today by many professionals. The medicine of the ancient Egyptians set the foundations of the medical care that we know today. Ancient Egypt was also the first to create a stable civilisation. They lived in cities, followed religions and used trade links, all of which were important for their improved medical methods. By comparing Egypt to the tribes at Isbister in 3000BC, we can see that Egypt’s society was much more socially developed and had an increased understanding of the human anatomy. Most of their ideas that expanded their knowledge of the human body originally came from the River Nile. Doctors began to create theories which suggested the anatomy consisted of channels, just like the irrigation channels dug by the farmers in the Nile. If the channels inside the body became blocked, it could cause a person to become unhealthy. The River Nile was also a main factor that influenced the wealth of the country. Unlike prehistoric Isbister, Egypt was a country with lots of money. When the Nile flooded, the surrounding land was covered with fertile soil. Because of this, farming was very successful and the landowners often became rich. With this money they were able to pay for medical care and also provide surgical equipment that enabled them to continue improving treatments for the sick. I'm 13 years old. The essay is about Egyptian medicine. more

Resolved Question: Did you know the new healthcare plan by the Finance Committee taxes device manufacturers $4 billion?

Better yet, do you know the reason why? Well it's pretty sneaky, really! Device manufactures make such thinks as EKG's, CAT Scanners, Lab Test Equipment, every surgical instrument ever made, x-ray, etc. And guess who pays for these devices? The patient. Each patient is charged a use fee based on all the devices in the room with the exception of major devices called "capital equipment." Those are billed in the service, such as MRI, CAT scanner, lab test, etc. And who are the patients? 80% are the already insured. IOW, 80% of the patients are going to pay for the taxes on the Device Manufacturers, which will help cover the uninsured that will be covered on the government plan. So you might ask yourself, "Why don't they just tax us instead?" Answer: "You would then know." They don't want you to know. This way, it is almost hidden and they can say they are not taxing you, but taxing those great big rich medical companies. The problem here, unlike the Pharmaceutical companies, most of the best Device Manufacturers are based right here in the USA. No we don't import devices from China or Japan yet, as we are the best at making these things... next best is the UK. Not China, not Japan, not India... only the USA. Believe me, that pacemaker inside your chest was most likely made by Medtronic (Minneapolis, MN), the world leader... ditto that stent that allowed you to avoid open heart surgery... the same products 120 other countries use. So what will our companies do that are taxed so much? Clearly they will sell and concentrate their efforts at locations that will make them the most money... IOW, outside the USA. And with each device, it is governed just like a drug so it goes through FDA testing. These are called "Trials." Many of our schools, doctors, and teaching hospitals are given grants by the device manufacturers to do these trials. Once concentrated in other countries, the dollars will go there and to their medical institutions. Isn't it a shame that a "Finance Committee" would screw us instead of control our/their finances. Folks, it is nothing more than a tax and will drive one of the few high technology companies that are still viable here in the USA into other countries. Who the heck is running the show here anyway?========== No mmm_soylentgreen... this is the real deal. Even a number of democrats are against this. Of course some of these are in states that employ a number of device manufacturing employees. I think what you'll see is a big concern about making it hard for manufacturing companies to compete, but the truth is that it's a sham to find some way to pay for this plan without most people knowing where it is coming from. Also understand that Device Manufacturers do not have the lobby that the Drug manufacturers do.========== http://www.medicaldevices.org/public/ more

Resolved Question: Is it possible to sterilize a vibrator using an autoclave?

I recently bought a miniVibes model Corsar from FunFactory. This vibrator consists of a shaft coated with medical-grade silicone containing a motor and battery compartment. The bottom of the battery compartment is made of some form of hard plastic (I am guessing polycarbonate, but am not sure about this). Inside the compartment are several metal contact points, wires, and the motor. I was wondering whether anyone out there knows whether it is possible to sterilize this kind of vibrator in a medical autoclave (yes, I have access to one). This sterilizes surgical equipment by subjecting it to high-pressure steam. The standard setting for metal surgical tools is 10 minutes at 132 degrees Celsius. It can be set to run at a slightly lower temperature for a longer period of time. I am not too concerned about the silicone; however, the plastic may melt under the high temperature and the internal components might warp. I would like to know whether this model will survive the autoclave and what temperature settings would be best. I am aware that most sellers simply recommend soap and water or (this seems most effective to me for surface cleaning) medical-grade alcohol. However, I am an engineering student and am not satisfied to let it rest at this. Any help would be appreciated! more

Resolved Question: Why did Mexico's military aid, help, and assist Americans after Katrina hurricane in New Orleans, USA ?

On August 30, 2005, Mexican President Vicente Fox sent his condolences to President George W. Bush: "In the name of the people and of the government of Mexico, I assure you of my deepest and most sincere condolences for the devastating effects caused by Hurricane Katrina". He also mentioned his instructions to the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs; that the United States would be provided with any kind of help that was needed. On September 1, Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas received almost 196 Mexican troops, 14 truckloads of water, a mobile surgical unit, 45 military vehicles, 3 tons of purified water, and more than 250 tons of food, bottled water, canned food, disposable diapers and medical supplies. The Mexican Government sent $1 million through the Mexican Red Cross which collected an additional million, as well as 200 tons of food delivered in five airplanes from the Mexican Air Force by another Mexican Government body. The Mexican Navy sent two ships, eight all-terrain vehicles, seven amphibious vehicles, two tankers, two helicopters, radio communication equipment, medical personnel Mexican aid workers set up temporary headquarters in the Houston Astrodome to assist relief workers and hurricane victims were very grateful for the aid that the Mexicans provided. The Mexicans provided hot meals to evacuees and relief workers, and Mexican medical teams also deployed into local area hospitals to tend to the influx of evacuees who flooded San Antonio area hospitals. The medical team was three doctors, three dentists, three nurses and three paramedics, conducted 134 medical evaluations, performed 526 medical consultations, provided 363 ambulatory nursing procedures, and medically evacuated 83 personnel during their hurricane relief mission. affected by Katrina, and also offered to cover the costs of returning mexican nationals back to Mexico. Also offered was teams of epidemiologists, to reduce the risks of infections caused by mosquitoes. The Mexican Red Cross sent four rescue experts from the state of Jalisco to assist in rescue efforts in New Orleans. The government of the Mexican Federal District also pledged to help with relief efforts. On September 4 the Mexican Navy offered ships, buses and helicopters to assist in rescue missions. The offer was accepted and the Mexican ship Papaloapan departed from Tampico, with two Mi-17 helicopters, eight all-terrain vehicles, seven amphibious vehicles, two tankers, radio communication equipment, medical personnel and 250 tons of food. Resolved Question: 10 points!!!!!!!!summarize please?

With no magic weight-loss pill available and more focus on the increasing rate of obesity among adults, people struggling with obesity are turning to surgery, especially procedures that have become less invasive. For local surgeons and hospitals, that demand translates into a growing business for bariatric — stomach reduction — surgery. Some Bay Area hospitals and medical groups that have performed the surgery for a few years are now expanding, hiring more surgeons and buying more equipment geared for operating on people who weigh as much as 600 pounds. "There are more people understanding the significance of the health risk," said Dr. Mary Estakhri, director of minimally invasive surgery for ValleyCare Health System in Pleasanton. "Years ago, it was seen as incredibly drastic or it was seen as taking the easy way out. But now, frequently patients know other people who have had it, and it's more of a reality." Since 2000, Estakhri has performed stomach reduction surgeries at ValleyCare with laparoscopic surgery, a technique that is less invasive. The health system recently hired another surgeon since officials expect a 25 percent increase in bariatric patients over the next year. The procedure involves inserting a small camera in the surgical area through a small incision, and surgeons view the area on a video screen. They operate with instruments inserted through other small incisions. In the last three years, stomach reduction surgeries have almost doubled, increasing from almost 37,000 in 2000 to over 63,000 for the year ended in June, according to the American Society for Bariatric Surgery. About 90 percent of those surgeries were performed in this country. Given average surgery costs of $25,000, that translates to more than $1.4 billion spent on bariatric surgery in the United States in the most recent year. And though many insurers cover it, some only cover a specific type of bariatric operation. It is not uncommon for patients to foot the bill themselves, hospital administrators say. For instance, 20 percent of the patients who have had stomach reduction surgery by Drs. Robert or John Rabkin in San Francisco pay for the surgery themselves, according to their office. Demand for surgeries in the future is expected to remain strong, though it's hard to say what it will be exactly since the decision to undergo the procedure is a personal one. The surgery is meant for morbidly obese people or those people at risk for diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and back problems. About 16 million people in this country are morbidly obese, or at least 100 pounds overweight. "It's a service line that for most hospitals is profitable at this time," said Ken Steele, CEO of St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco. A combination of factors make the surgery more popular now, Estakhri and others say. In the last few years, celebrities including singer Carnie Wilson and NBC weather forecaster Al Roker have had stomach reduction surgery. And national attention has spotlighted the fact that more Americans are obese and that obesity is a high risk for diabetes, hypertension, a host of back problems and ailments like sleep apnea. Dr. John Feng, part of Laparoscopic Associates, a practice in San Francisco headed by Dr. Gregg Jossart, frequently sees patients at satellite offices in Petaluma and Eureka. Three surgeons in the practice perform three kinds of laparoscopic surgery on at least 200 patients a year, mostly at California Pacific Medical Center. The surgeons hold online chat sessions with patients to help them with questions about their recovery. "It's such a growing field right now that I think it will drive a lot of doctors to get this expertise especially in laparoscopic surgery because patients specifically look for that," Feng said. "It's not unusual to have patients come into the office who have read a lot about this surgery and they come into the office and ask" for a specific kind of surgery. "Unless we can find the underlying problems causing obesity, and those are multifactorial, I think it will only grow," Feng said of the demand. The surgeries reduce the size of the stomach and the rate at which calories are absorbed. So after surgery, a person does not want to eat as much. Results of the surgery vary but a person can lose anywhere from half to at least 70 percent of their excess body weight over a period of a year or two following surgery. The surgery can be especially beneficial for adults under age 60, Feng said, because it often enables them to get off expensive medication. Earlier this year, St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco spent about $500,000 to equip an operating room with special tables and equipment. CEO Ken Steele has been engineering a turnaround for the Catholic Healthcare West hospital, which is close to breaking even after losing more than $12 million in 2001. Resolved Question: Did anybody see the list of extras added to the $700 billion Wall Street bail out?

Remember when that bail out plan kept going back and forth, back and forth and THEN got signed? Hmmmm....... did anybody see all the "extra" stuff attached to it? You know the old saying "scratch my back ...."? Isn't it amazing how much other stuff gets tacked on to a bill that we only know the title of -- granted some of this is necessary and helpful, but come on: Children's wooden arrows, rum excise tax revenues to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands; and does THIS sound fair: Accelerated depreciation for property used mostly on an Indian reservation? More on the Bill Apart from the Troubled Assets Relief Program, the bill before the Senate includes: * Extensions of the AMT patch, tax deductions on state and local sales taxes, tuition, teacher expenses and real property taxes and tax credits for business research and new market investors * Energy tax credits and incentives to encourage wind and refined coal production, new biomass facilities, wave and tide electricity generators, solar energy property improvements, CO2 capturing, plug-in electric drive vehicles, idling reduction units on truck engines, cellulosic biofuels ethanol production, energy efficient houses, offices, dishwashers, clothes washers and refrigerators, and fringe benefits for employees commuting by bicycle. * A requirement for private insurance plans to offer mental health benefits on par with medical-surgical benefits * Tax relief provisions for victims of this summer's Midwestern floods, and Hurricane Ike * Freezing of deductions for sale and exchange of oil and natural gas, mandatory basis reporting by brokers for transactions involving publicly traded securities and an extension of the oil spill tax But it also extends the following tax provisions: * Economic development credit to American Samoan businesses * $10,000 tax credit for training of mine rescue team members * 50% immediate expensing for extra underground mine safety equipment * Tax credit for businesses with employees from an Indian reservation * Accelerated depreciation for property used mostly on an Indian reservation * 50% tax credit for some expenditures on maintaining railroad tracks * 7-year recovery period for motorsports racetrack property * Expensing of cleaning up "brownfield" contaminated sites * Enhanced deductions for businesses donating computers and books to schools, and for food donations * Deduction for income from domestic production in Puerto Rico * Tax credit for employees in Hurricane Katrina disaster area * Tax incentives for investments in poor neighborhoods in D.C. * Increased rehabilitation credit for buildings in Gulf area * Reduction of import duties on some imported wool fabrics, transfers other duties to Wool Trust Fund to promote competitiveness of American wool * Special expensing rules for film and TV productions And there's more: * Increasing cover of rum excise tax revenues to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands * Making it easier for film and TV companies to use deduction for domestic production * Exempting children's wooden arrows from excise tax * Income averaging for Exxon Valdez litigants for tax purposes  more

Voting Question: Should I change careers?

I went to school to be a surgical technologist and after two years finished the program. then I was immediately hired at a small surgery center to help open a new facility and i didn't scrub any surgeries for almost a year. We built the center up, sterile processing, managment, equipment, supplies everything! then our first surgery was a simple breast biopsy. then all we did was cataract surgeries and more breast biopsys and hemmhoroids and endoscopys day after day. I never learned to do any real indepth surgeries for two years but i hung in there think i would eventhing learn all the services. Now that i have left that job after two years, i find I have no marketable skills in the world of surgical technology. I skills are so basic and elementary that i can't find a job. and I'm at a loss as to what to do. Should I give up surgical technology and work as a medical assistant or EKG tech or what? I haven't work in 4 months and I'm getting desperate as to what i should do. Do stick with the surgical tech line or ditch it? I am afraid to apply for scrub tech jobs because I don't feel qualified anymore. Please some advice.  more

Resolved Question: Surgical tech to Med assistant?

I've been a surgical for two years and though i enjoy it, it's very stressful, it was a two year program. I scrub and assist the surgeon by passinstruments, getting set up, clean pt, when procedure is finished and cleaning room and accounting for all of our equipment for the procedure. I'm currently not working and wanted to know if it would be out of line for me to apply for some medical assitant positions even though I don't have Med assistant certificate. I do feel more than qualified for what they do, how would I respond when asked what my qualifications are. I need to work. more

Resolved Question: un-resolved abdominal pain on the lower right hand side- not appendix and bowel given all clear?

started in September 07 admitted to hospital 3 times have had numerous tests my scans ultra sound and ct were clear. I have also had a colonoscopy which was clear to the terminal ilium. my overies are clear, blood tests showed no indication of infection and no significant increase in the marker which shows up endomitriosis although i have a passed history of this. Examined by medical and surgical teams The timings of the flare ups seemed to be linked to my menstural bleed and so i hav returned to the depro 3 monthly injection to stop my bleeds my gynacologist does not want to do an exploritory as has told my dr that it would not alter her treatment believe real reason is I am size 18 about 105kg and she had already said that i needed to loose weight in case it was nesessary as i'm on the large size to be able to use the equipment. she didnt want to do it basicaly its barable but i feel it through morphine do i put up and shut up my dr thinks prob best. feels like appendix but its notno blood pressure probs not anxious no palpations or flushing.not being sickstools are normal soft reasonable size passed once or twice usualy in the morning after about half hour have been treated with an anti spasmodic to rule ibs out also checked out by bowel team of drs more

Resolved Question: Rudy Guilannis wife experimented on dogs, your thoughts?

Would you still vote for Guilanni knowing his wife experimented on live dogs? NY Post reported: Judith Giuliani once demonstrated surgical products for a controversial medical-supply company that used dogs - which were later killed - in operations whose only purpose was to sell equipment to doctors, The Post has learned. "It was a horribly cruel, outrageous program," Friends of Animals President Priscilla Feral said about the demonstrations of medical staplers on dogs conducted by U.S. Surgical Corp. employees during Giuliani's tenure there in the late 1970s. The dogs were "either put to death following the sales demonstrations because they can't re cover from them, or they die during them," Feral said. more

Resolved Question: Electrical shock-We need where we can find information?

I am in need of some information & where I can go to find information in medical literature regarding electrical shock. My precious (a young surgical RN) daughter-in-law experienced a serious electrical shock at work (in an operating room). To this point, I have not talked to her to get more details but she is still very ill from this. She has migraine headaches, abdominal cramps, tingling in her arm & etc. I am very worried about her. Some type of equipment malfunctioned & it destroyed the equipment & severely shocked her. I am not certain of what tests she has had done & all, as she is sleeping all the time from the exhaustion & too ill to be up much. I just need medical information so I can give her to make sure she gets proper tests & such & is properly informed as to what all she needs checked out. She has never yet had children & wonder if this will affect her eggs? Please help. She is too ill to research thisI am not trying to treat her, I just want to offer her information so she will not just sleep & not get the tests & such that she may need. However, if sleep is all that will help her, then, it's okay to know that, too. I know following any injury, you are going to require more rest to heal, but she needs information to make sure she is getting the proper care. I have never known of anyone to have this experience & lived, so I do not know what all needs to happen. (She was sent home following this event without medical intervention & made to take vacation time off work initially. Therefore, I do not believe we can just trust the doctors care right now.) She needs to be informed herself, so she can take her responsibility for making sure she is getting the proper care. I have found very little info through "Google". I was hoping for medical sites we could look over. more

Resolved Question: What courses/background study should I do, to become a Medical Device Consultant?

I am currently employed with a degree in Optical Technology, and have 11 yrs work experience. Of this, I have 6 yrs experience specializing in customer telecom and datacom applications, with optical modules. I want to change career path, to become a medical devices/instrumentation consultant. I want to develop product specs, and consult with doctors/surgeons on requirements for medical monitoring and surgical equipment, then deliver this to engineering. I currently have no medical background. Although I have a strong background in lasers and optics, and most medical equipment now use a laser/optics. Any suggestions are welcome either from people already in this field or others. more

Resolved Question: If surgical consent is not obtained for a non-life threatening injury & performed anyway is that Malpractice?

I was admitted and signed for Pain Management and ER Protocols. The ER staff immediately put me on Morphine (high Dose) and never discussed surgery while I was coherent and capable of making an informed Medical decision. As a matter of fact I don't remember anything for a 17 day time span and there is no signed surgical consent on record. I am single and have no one else that would be allowed to make medical decisions for me. The injury itself is rare in nature and requires procedures and equipment that are not available to my local Hospital in rural West TN. From information obtained on the internet I suffered a level II trauma with brain involvement that was not revealed as the Drs. never looked for any other damage. The Neurologic injury has just been confirmed. Since the surgery was performed without my consent written or verbal does that constitute Malpractice? And who would be liable the Hospital or Private Practice Physician? I requested to be transferred to a trauma unit more
