Open Question: Are the Taliban animals that just butchered 10 unarmed medical workers any reflection on Islam whatsoever?

Imagine it. Ten humans draped in medical gear. You search em and all you find is more medical equipment and no weapons. You then proceed to fill their bodies full of lead while praising Allah. There they lie on the ground, motionless, all ten of em. Now people heres the thing. This is just one of the many many kinds of attrocities that you only pretty much only see in the islamic world. Go ahead and paste me a link to any similar event in history from another culture (not by accident), you want find many. It's pretty much an Islamic monopoly. Bacha Bazi dancing slave boys, honor killings, stoning of woman, legal raping of woman for the sins of their brother, etc etc...only in Islam. Go ahead, say it. I wanna hear some clueless monkey say "oh this is no reflection on Islam". "The Taliban claimed responsibility for the killings and accused the medical workers of proselytizing Christianity." http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/south-asia/Eight-foreign-medical-workers-killed-in-Afghanistan/articleshow/6271901.cms Well that explains it! Indeed, if one actually was to try and talk about their different beliefs, they certainly should be riddle with a hundred bullets....unless they happened to be outside an Islamic country, then the act would be insane and unheard of. I am an atheist and prefer not to hear anyones religious spiel but it doesnt bug that much either. I have studied Islam and anyone who has knows full well that these murders are a part of Islamic doctrine. Even in more moderate parts of the Islamic world (handful of cities) I guarentee that most muslims dont feel repulsed by them at all. More like a "well, they had it coming. allah knows best". more

Voting Question: help looking for an insurance policy?

are there health insurance policies that just cover major medical? What I'm looking for is coverage if something catastrophic happens, like I break a leg, or need surgery or I get cancer or I need some type of hospitalization. Do they offer this type of insurance, because I'm having a hard time finding a policy. I don't need doctor's visits, maternity, lab work, prescription or durable medical equipment covered. Just catastrophic coverage. more

Resolved Question: Settle a dispute, please!?

I work in the medical equipment repair industry. When clients call, they quite often need service as quickly as possible, as broken equipment means they cannot see patients. My feeling is to schedule them as soon as I can, but if it is not going to be same day, I tell them so, with apologies, and do my best to get them on the book for the next day. My boss thinks that it is best to tell them we will be there that day, even if I know it is not possible. His thinking is, if we can get them on the book, we have the upper hand on doing the work, even if I have to call and reschedule. My feeling is it is better not to lie, but to let them know exactly when we can get there, but he says if I do that, they might call someone else. What do you think - better to not lie, and run a slight risk of losing the business, or lie, and piss them off when we don't show up as promised, therefore losing future business? more

Resolved Question: Work out questions and heart rate?

I have been overweight most of my life and at this point I am sick of it. Recently I have been eating much less and now I am trying to get into some workout habits. My first question is heart rate, because I normally do very little exercise should I be cautious of my rate or just go for it. Today I was riding a stationary bike and my heart rate was around 145 when riding at a normal resistance and around 165 at a high resistance level. Does that seem normal, O I guess I should also tell you I am 21 years old, 6foot, about 375 pounds (hard to find a scale). I am asking these questions on here because I don't have medical insurance anymore so I cant really see a doctor and ask these questions. If anyone has some good workouts I can do to burn calories I would love to hear them. I don't have much equipment I have a few weights nothing major, a stationary bike and that's about it. I would love to have a regular bike but I just cant afford it right now. I also plan to join a gym when I can afford it. But in the mean time any workout suggestions or websites that have worked for you in the past would be appreciated. more

Resolved Question: What is the name of the company from Bern that makes these machines for use in hospitals?

Last month I ran into a businessman from Bern in Bangkok that sells these machines all over Asia. I told him I was moving to Bangkok sometime in the future, and have some past experience in sales with various medical equipment. He gave me his card and told me to contact him because he would be looking for some sales people in the near future. I lost his card and his contact information. I just know the company is based out of Bern, and they sell machines to hospitals all over Asia and Southeast Asia. If I could know the name of the company, they probably have a website where I could send my resume. Sorry for being so long winded, but this would be a very good opportunity for me. Thanks in advance. more

Voting Question: Boyfriend doesn't like traveling with me....or am I crazy?

We've been together for about 6 years. After 4 years, I got into a car accident and am now a paraplegic. I have all these new-found insecurities that make me feel like a burden on him and anyone else. A lot of my friends travel and I always hear of their adventures abroad. I can't help but cry on the inside that I can't just fly away on a whim and backpack through Europe without intricate planning and the use of a wheelchair and other medical equipment. I've approached my boyfriend about traveling, but he says he's not really the traveling type and likes to stay home. I sometimes think that maybe it's because I'm such a hassle to travel with. He says it's not because of me. The first trip we went on together after being injured was on a 7 day cruise to the Bahamas with a few friends. That trip alone, took me a few years of nagging before he finally agreed to go. He went to Vegas with the guys a few months ago and he had no problems deciding to go. It was just so easy for him to decide. Whenever I ask, he says, he has to check for vacation days, see if he has the funds etc...(which is sad cause in Vegas he spent 2 grand..which is way more than when we went on our cruise.) Just recently, he told me his family is going back home to visit for a month (Spain). He'll go with his family on a trip, but has never had the same willingness to go for a short vacation with me. Plus, his family gets him so angry, when we fight, it looks like child's play. I don't know what to think, am I just frustrated over nothing? I feel that I'm making him do chores by asking and pleading with him to travel with me. It makes me sad thinking that one day in the future, he'll just become more reluctant. What do I do? I feel guilty that I imagine being with someone else that wants to explore the world with me. more

Resolved Question: Where can I find a Doctor that will make me better?

I am a 22 year old female, and have been having severe chest pains for the past 3 months. I was told by one cardiologist that it's "probably just stress" and he sent me on my way. The pain in my chest is bad enough that I frequently double over, applying pressure seems to help a little. I've been trying to get in for a second opinion (one of the other medical facilities I called laughed when I told them my diagnoses was "stress" and said that "a 22 year old woman should not be doubling over from chest pain no matter the stress," and that "there must be an underlying condition.") Now completely aside from the chest issue: Yesterday while I was working I passed out, within 1 1/2 minutes I went from feeling nauseous->dizziness->lost vision-> equilibrium went crazy(I couldn't tell what was up, down, floor ceiling)->then hit the floor. Once I could see again I tried to get up and would immediately black out and pass out on the floor again. This happened four times total before a co-worker found me and gave me a glucose tablet and some water. I've been having dizzy spells and am absolutely exhausted since then and would really just like for one the of doctors around here to work with me until they've figured out what's going on. Each one that I call just tells me to go to the ER though, one of the hospitals in town won't even treat me because they said they "don't have the proper equipment." How can no one treat me when all they can tell me is that I'm hurting because of stress?! Advice please!!! I feel like hell every day and am pretty freaked out about what is happening with my body, and unfortunately can't seem to find a medical professional to take this seriously enough to help me. THANK YOU! more

Resolved Question: female medical professionals: ever see a male patient get hard?

For women who may be doctors, radiologists, operate ultrasound equipment, etc.: have you ever had a male patient who had to take his clothes off for the exam, and he got visibly aroused in front of you? If so, how did you and he react? This basically happened to me the other day, but my member was under a hand towel, but it was obvious that I was aroused. She pretended that nothing had happened, and i played along with that, but i want to hear if anyone did anything differently. more

Resolved Question: Broken Wrist misdiagnosed by doctor?

I broke my arm almost a year ago playing football. I was taken for x-rays at the hospital and was told I had a broken arm, which I knew because I heard it break and could clearly see it was broken. The problem I began to see from the very beginning was that it was really my wrist that hurt, and not my arm. I was referred to a doctor, who casted my arm, and then suggested surgery on the bone that was broken. I continued to tell this doctor that my wrist was in much more pain than my arm, and that I believed there was something wrong with my wrist also. Apparently he did not see anything on his x-rays to make him believe this. I began to think, based off other interactions with this doctor that he was not very good at what he does. I decided to get a second opinion from my neighbor, who is an orthopedic surgeon. He cut the cast off my arm the day after the first doctor put it on. He told me I SHOULD NOT get any type of surgery and that it wasn't as bad as the other doctor has made it seem. Again, I told this doctor that the pain was in my wrist, not in my arm.... and again, no attention was given to my wrist. Now this doctor is supposed to be very good. He preformed knee surgery on my father, has medical patents on equipment, and came highly recommended to me. I never went back to see the other doctor, mainly because my family got the impression that he was trying to perform an unnecessary surgery on my arm for money. Fast forward a few months. I had a wear a full arm cast. I lost every single ounce of muscle in my arm, and in my shoulder. It was by far the most miserable experience of my life. When I got it off, all of the hair on my arm was “dead”. When I rubbed my arm, it all just rubbed off. Now that it has grown by, there are 2 to 3 hairs coming from almost all of the follicles!!!!!!!! I went back to the doctor after getting my cast off and continued to express concern that there was more wrong with my wrist than he realized. It was as if he didn’t take me seriously at all. He gave me some shitty brace to wear on my wrist and told me to come back in a month. I came back, let him know that nothing had changed, and he basically said, “my injury is going to take time to heal.” I am pretty upset. It has been like 9-10 months since it was broken and I still feel EXTREME pain in certain situations where I have to support a large amount of weight or bend in a certain direction. I lost a great deal of range of motion in my arm, and even more so in my wrist. My bad wrist does not feel, or look, anything like my strong wrist. When I “play” with my wrist, as in move it around and do what I can do with my strong wrist, I can feel grinding, popping, and clicking. My weak arm/wrist is also still VERY weak. I am having severe trouble rebuilding muscle in the arm. Now it’s getting to the point where I KNOW there is something wrong, but doctors do not. What the heck should I do? I really feel as though both of these doctors have made a huge mistake in my diagnoses’. Can they be held responsible? I play college lacrosse and was unable to play last season because of the injury and I do not want any permanent damage, although it seems like that’s too late already. more

Voting Question: Do you get paid while on Terminal Leave from the Army?

My ETS date is 23 March 2012, but I plan on transferring from Army to Air Force. A recruiter for the Air Force explained to me that I MUST be seperated from the Army for a minimum of 90 days to enlist under the prior service program. I have a child that requires constant medical attention, hospital visits, specialized medical equipment, medications, etc. So, my question is, will I get paid by the Army while on Terminal Leave, or will I have to find a Top Dollar Paying Job to try hard to make some money for that 90 days? more

Voting Question: Taking supplies to Africa, any ideas on places to look for grants, equipment, and other support?

My name is LeeAnna, and I am planning a trip to Africa after my high-school graduation, summer 2011, along with long time certified Oregon midwife, Sherry Dress. Our purpose for this trip is to take medical supplies to birthing facilities in the area and train their local midwifes in order to better equip them for their important job as medical providers for pregnant women and their babies. This will be Sherry's second trip to Africa, however it will be my first time assisting her. 6,150 women die in child birth every year in Kenya due to lack of education and equipment. In order to better fulfill our goals in lowering that number, Sherry and I are looking for supportive companies who can donate equipment that we can personally deliver to the midwives in Africa. Any ideas of companies, churches, or centers that would be ideal to send letters to requesting for support? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Are there any CRNAs out there or anybody who knows one?

I need some career advice....I was thinking about becoming an RN....I can get my liscense in about a year at the local community college....then I was thinking about working in an ICU for a year while completing my Bachelor's...I have heard of programs to become Certified Registered Nurse Anestesiologist...all you need is a B.A. in nursing and one year of experience in the ICU....how long is the program to become an CRNA.....I heard its one of the best routes for an RN to take as far as prestige, salary, job opprotunity, and stress level....suppossedly its one of the best kept secrets of the medical industry....you can make more than most primary care physicians with a fraction of the schooling....the stress level is pretty minimal...most of the responsibilty lies in the hands of the surgeon...there is little patient interaction...I have always thought about going into the medical industry but dont thinnk I have the patience to go through a decade of training to become a doctor or surgeon....and I would like to be part of the actual patient care....not working on the business side dealing with insurance or billing....and I cant really see myself as a medical equipment specialist....repairing and maintaining equipment...or taking EKGs or X-rays....I thought about becoming a nurse but that seems like a position geared more towards to females...they being much more nuturing....plus I couldn't see myself cleaninig beadpans and things of that nature...the medical field seems to provide endless opprotunities in a broad range of facilities....I would like to get my start and continue to recieve more and more training for advancement....figure I could start as an RN....then work on my BA.....and eventually move over to the surgery department....does anyone know what the best way to go about this would be....what would be the quickest most direct route to becoming a CRNA.....right now I'm thinking I can get my liscense...work in the ICU while I get my Bachelor's...then go into the CRNA program....I'm hoping to achieve this all within 4 or 5 years.....is this possible...and if so what would be the best route to take....are there any CRNAs out there? Could you give me a feel for what the job is like, what it actually entails, what are the hours like, is it stressful, how did you go about getting there, are you nationally certified, do you have to constantly renew your liscense, what is the salary like...thats not really that important but I'm trying to get as much information as possible....I'm getting really excited about what I feel like I could be doing with the rest of my life...its feels great having an idea finally.....I dont want to get overly-excited or delusional to the point where my bubble bursts so I'm asking any RNs or CNRAs or people in the medical field to give me their insight.....its very much appreciated, thanks in advance...and keep up the good work. more

Resolved Question: Have a question for Emergency Medical Techs.?

Some background- I have been an EMT for 2 years and will be a paramedic by next year. I work in a private ambulance company that does 911 for 10 towns and 2 big cities. Full timers work a 24 hour 911 shift and a 16 hour facility transport shift. My recent partner of 2 years has become a paramedic and moved up. I am now with a partner who was part time for 8 years at this company. In his 8 years he held another office job he has since retired from (he is about 60 years old). In the 8 years all he has done is facility transports and has never done a 911 shift. He tells me he hates doing emergencies. My dilemma- I worked 10+ shifts with him so far. He still gets nervous and can't be responsible doing emergencies. Even a newbie would have this down by now. He is scared to drive lights and sirens so i let him "Tech" the call which means riding in back and doing clinical. We work in a big city so we get some crap calls. Yesterday he refused to give a patient nasal narcan to an unresponsive male because he wasn't sure if he needed it. For people who aren't familiar with Nasal Narcan it's not dangerous if the person doesn't need it. So i stepped up and gave it to the patient and the patient woke up and started breathing normally. Then we got a call for a person with a slit wrist and no ALS available. We get there and my partner starts shaking and getting flustered and forgets where all the equipment is. I grab the equipment and stop the bleeding before this guy even gets out of the truck with a band aid, A BAND AID! for an arterial bleed. This guy was gushing blood and he got a band aid. So we get a cardiac arrest and the same deal, i grab the Oxygen back and AED and go in for the kill. I tell him to grab the rest of the equipment and radio for ALS. He comes in with a stretcher, by equipment i ment a backboard, stretcher. I asked if he called ALS and he said yes. About 5 minutes into it i call dispatch for an ETA on ALS and they say it was never requested. By this time the firefighters get on scene so i have one of them drive while me and my partner perform CPR. He didn't know how to use an AED or put in an OPA. Either way i feel the outcome was going to be the same anyways, i doubt his performance made a difference however some day it could. I called up Human resources and told them the deal. They tell me they think it's just a personality conflict that i don't like him because of his age. I tell them i want it in writing that i told them about his action. In a case something does happen i want it in writing that they were aware of this problem and refused to fix it. They won't listen to me. Anything else i should do?Forgot to add when i let him drive we almost get killed and it takes way too long. We drive about 50 on a clear highway at 3am in the morning. more

Resolved Question: Available Medical Jobs in the Army? How long to wait for the ones you want?

My ASVAB scores qualify me for any jobs in the Army. I am interested in the following: Medical Laboratory Specialist (68K), Radiology Specialist (68P), Biomedical Equipment Specialist (68A), Dental Specialist (68E), Pharmacy Specialist (68Q), Operating Room Specialist (68D) and somewhat in that order. If the recruiter says these are not available then how does the waiting process go to get them. Do I check back every week to see if open or can I get on some sort of list? Could you tell me the how often each one of these jobs have been opening up lately? more

Resolved Question: too old for something like work experience?

I have a disability, spina bifida, and use a wheelchair, and ive basically never had a job. due to various things. some my fault, some out of my control. but now, im looking for something, ive basically had enough of not getting something out of life and not feeling a sense of purpose. like many people with disabilities, but due to the disability and never having worked i feel like i need to sort of prove to employers, and myself, that im capable of doing the kind of thing id like to try to get into. I recently decided a good area to work in would be something to do with medical/disability products/equipment/supplies/aids etc as, like i said im disabled myself, but obviosuly not on the medical side of things, it would be in a non degree requiring role. im thinking more on the sales, or storage and supplies side at my local hospital or something. and when i say medical supplies i dont just mean medical, i mean anything and everything you might find in a hospital. i found myself, last time i was on a hospital visit, looking at all the different things in the hospital, its a huge range of stuff, and i think it would be an interesting, varied job to work in that area. but as i i said because ive not had a job i feel the need to first show employers and myself that im capable, but the thing is, im 35 now, i just cant help thinking its a bit late for voluntary or work experience. would the NHS or anything like that be prepared to allow me to do something like voluntary or work experience as a way in? im more than prepared to to prove myself. more

Resolved Question: Jobs that involve making lists of things?

Any ideas? preferably something that doesnt require a degree or ten, cos i havent got one, although i am prepared if possible to study towards one whilst working. Im a bit of a list writing geek, ive done lists (or spreadsheets) of things like my cd and dvd collections, books, comics, all sorts of stuff, and im wondering about using this skill as a possibility for work. I have also recently decided a good area to work in would be something to do with medical/disability products/equipment/supplies/aids etc., as im disabled myself, and when i say medical supplies i dont just mean medical, i mean anything and everything you might find in a hospital. i found myself, last time i was on a hospital visit, looking at all the different things in the hospital, its a huge range of stuff, and i think it would be an interesting, varied job to work in that area. but could the two be combined in some way? All i can think of really is working in the stores/distribution department of the local hospital, which would be good, but wanted more ideas. more

Resolved Question: what kind of jobs are available in?

the medical/disability equipment/products/ability aids/supplies industry that dont require a degree? I have a disability, spina bifida, and i use a wheelchair, and since the government are now targeting disabled people even if they are not capable of work and making them look for work i have looked into things i'd like to do (if i had the choice), trying to beat the government at their own game and jumping before im pushed, and this industry really appeals. Ive spent my life around hospitals, doctors surgeries, podietrists etc and it sounds a bit sad but ive always been interested by the equipment and products i see, so ive decided thats what i want to get into, but as i said i dont have a degree (yet, i am prepared to work and study towards one at the same time though) I was just thinking working in the stores/supplies department of my local hospital would be a good way in as thousands of different products are stored in these places so i think it would be a good place to learn about them. and as i get DLA and hope to get tax credits too i dont mind (not that i would have the choice anyway) of taking a low paid job. Any suggestions on this would be much appreciated, i really want to get going with this like NOW lolI should also mention im not keen on a desk job,not one thats all day every day anyway, being a wheelchair user doesnt mean you cant move around, more

Resolved Question: opinions on marijuana! all welcome?

Resolved Question: Is it okay to do a lot of push ups and back exercises every day?

I'm young and in okay shape, and realize some intense exercises(like lifting weights) can't be done every day since they require one or 2 days of rest. But can doing push-ups, and exercises for strengthening the back and abs(without equipment) be done every day? I have no medical issues, and I do jog times a week for an hour, but I'm not sure how to incorporate push ups and lower back exercises into my routine. Can I do the push-ups and back exercises the same day I jog? I just want to put on some muscle and and strengthen my back since my posture isn't so good. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Can I buy a house at 65 years of age?

I am a 65 yr old widow with an income of $30K and a large savings acct. I own my home outright and would like to buy a smaller house in town (I have 18 acres in the country). My late husband and I had BAD credit and I have worked 6 yrs to build my credit. My friend says I can't get a home loan due to age and income. Is this true? I don't want to be stuck in the country and drive 12 miles to town, and someday have to ask my kids for help. My income is better than average for where I live and I only owe $4K on a credit card for medical equipment. Has anyone ever heard of being refused a loan due to age? more

Resolved Question: Help with starting a medical based business?

I am hoping of creating my own business in the future (10 to 20 years from now, possibly more). For a brief overview, I am expecting this business to focus on things such as genetic analysis and pharmaceuticals (main goal is production of pharmaceutical drugs, but this may be to large of a goal to initially aim for). With the inclusion of lab costs, staff, equipment, samples and various consumables what would be a rough projected figure (for a beginning company, I am not asking for the cost of creating a facility operating at Amgen standards)? Naturally, I imagine it would be a large amount (most likely much larger than what I could save for). I had expected something such as a bank loan (this may be naive of me) to help (would this be the best method???). What are some ways that I could better tailor myself to be approved for a large bank investment (should a loan be the best method)? For detail, I am currently going to a good college, my community track record is sound (no friction with the law, volunteering and active member of the community), I am showing large amounts of promise in biological research (published articles), etc. I'm not sure if this matters but thought that it may influence a loan application. Any advice on obtaining the money / loan application tailoring / getting started? Thanks in advance. more
