Open Question: Career Options? Majors?

Career Options, couldn't get a good answer in US forum? European career/major options? I have always been into cultures. ANY culture outside the USA intrigues me. Especially European. I have an interest in languages and would love to learn all of them (though impossible). I do like to read, do NOT like speaking. I enjoy diversity and adventure and would like to travel a bit before settling down -- or if my career was moving around... I know lots of random facts and I know a lot about different cultures, most of the stuff my friends have not heard of. (Such as when a South African spoke Afrikaans an axiom about tears, I knew that he spoke about tears because Afrikaans is derived from Dutch which is similar to German--I took German in high school). My friends say I am "cultured" as a result. I am proud to be apart of the USA- a significant country in the world, but I would like to explore Europe and decide where I would want to live. I want a different kind of life than here, although the standard of living is nice here. Does anybody have career/major suggestions for particular countries of Europe? I wanted to be a doctor, maybe in psychiatry or dermatology.. Firstly because I knew dermatology was interesting to me, I love skincare products and the process of healing or renewing someone--fixing something they themselves cannot fix by themselves. In college I will need to take trigonometry and calculus, Chemistry 1 and 2, Organic Chemistry 1 and 2, Physics and then get into medical school with a high GPA after mathematics--which I find extremely hard-- I might get a C in both Trig and Calc. My major is now nursing- to be a physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or specialized nurse, because I fear I won't be able to get to medical school. I’m pretty smart but I hate mathematics. I know these classes listed above are BRUTAL. It scares me to think I won’t make it and fall short. Everyone says “It is how much you want it”. I get that. For me I want it so badly, but why put myself through so much if I can find something that I wholly love taking classes for, and I can make decent money off of in the future? Basically I feel really inadequate and dumb right now because I was counting on dermatology. But I don't know if I want to put myself through this when I could do something I love. I just don't know if what I love can make me a career I can live off of. ***********Please list majors and/or careers that may coincide with my first paragraph and the interests described here. I'm not so sure about Linguistics, what careers are there? And what careers for Anthropology? And what careers for Psychology? How is nursing/doctor/pharmacy in different countries of Europe? more

Resolved Question: Are people who write about "natural health" actually qualified to do so?

Looking at one website often referenced we pick an author at random and look at his qualifications. "Mike Adams is a natural health researcher and author" So far so good. He doesn't however state what his qualifications are and what/where he's published. Researchers usually publish and are usually qualified in their area of research. Well let's move on. "He is a prolific writer and has published thousands of articles, interviews, reports and consumer guides" great. So does Which? but I wouldn't expect them to go telling me about health factors without referring to real medical scientists. "He has created over 100 CounterThink cartoons and produced several popular hip-hop songs" Now that certainly qualifies him to research. I think this is in the same way that Brian Cox was a member of Dare and D:Ream qualified him to go and work on ATLAS at CERN - nothing to do with a PhD in physics, all you need is to publish music and you're in. "He's also a veteran of the software technology industry, having founded a personalized mass email software product" So did Ralsky and he and his team got 24 years in jail So what qualifies this person to write about health and be publishing articles telling what is and isn't good for us? This guy is prolific, if I were publishing like he does in my field of science and going against all known current thinking then people would be asking me what qualified me to do this. Why aren't people being more critical when it comes to their health?Does being a football player qualify one to be a studio analyst? No idea, we're not discussing sport and I know nothing about it "Are all the thousands of political analyists that write columns qualified?" Certainly the ones who are listened to have at least one degree in an appropriate subject such as history, economics or political science and often two or more. Most have a double. "Is everyone who paints your house or tends your garden qualified?" Yes, if they are not why would you employ them in the first place? If you wish to employ unqualified people then you get what you deserve when it all goes wrong, and they are unlikely to have proper insurance and more likely to make a botch job of it. Watch Anne Robinson for prime examples. "How about the people that watch your kids or teach them in school?" Absolutely, and are members of professional registers and can be banned and struck off.If there is all this quality research going on, then why isn't it being published in peer reviewed journals where the protocols can be tested and replicated by others? And NO I am not accepting an answer that says "because Big Pharma won't like it" more

Resolved Question: what is the likely future of the UK and European economy for the next 5 - 10 years?

After the budget info on cuts being announced and a lot more on the Horizon likely to be coming in the near future. It's clear the Gov has on a damage limitation attitude to the economy for the next 5 years. unemployment is at 2.5 mill and is a lot higher when you think about the kids in education in school, collegee and uni, that graduate year on year putting more pressure on the jobs market and resources (with degree which increasingly mean less each year). Iv been looking for full time permanent work for 5 months and forced to take part time work (due to going travel and then coming back... if you want a stable future never live your dreams... and do not leave a full time job even if you hate it!) Most people I know have no idea what the solution is to the economy (maybe there isn't one) or they just don'tnt want to think about it as they fear losing their job and don't know what they would do. If people knew where the economy is gowing then we can plan for the future but no one is telling us. Ok job growth will happen in social care, education, medical docs/ nurses in the future but these jobs do not generate money they require it. Jobs that generate money for a country are those that make things in your bundarieses or in your land borders e.g. oil extraction, raw material extraction, manufacturing - cars, electrical goods, food etc. green energy? BUT WE DONT MAKE THESE THINGS ANY MORE!. One law I I thought could help solve the problem is: - The UK Invent a lot of products and is one of the world leaders, if we made it illegal to outsource anythe products division to outside countrie e.g. if the product is designed by a british citizen the product must be built here and marketed and sold from britain to the rest of the world acquiring the resources to make the product from abroad (if needed). good ensure job security in the UK and high employment, Bad - may force intelligent people to leave the UK and force the price of products up. So where do you think the UK and europe will be in 5 - 10 years how can we ensure our future for our growing population? more

Resolved Question: Are sticky price labels a social experiment to test consumer patience?

I think we might have a conspiracy on our hands. We now live in a society that can cure most medical diseases, that has been able to invent a box with life-like moving pictures in it, and has been able to invent mechanical horses that can sit numerous people in them and can travel hundreds of kms per hour - man has even learnt how to fly! But we cant work out a fucking way to make PRICE LABELS on every day products completely removable, without a truckload of work and patience? WTF? more

Resolved Question: I want to achieve a better quality of sleep. How can I do this?

(ATTENTION ONLINE SALESPEOPLE: NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR HERBAL REMEDIES, ETC) Excuse the notice in caps. I'm finding some of the salespeople on here insufferable... Anyway, I have very important university finals next week and in the two weeks after that and I'm finding that despite getting 7 or 8 hours of sleep a night, sometimes a little bit more I am still finding I am really tired, sometimes because I've woken up a little too early (half 6 or something) and gone back to sleep again. I wondered if anyone had any tips that would help me sleep more soundly during the night. I avoid foods with caffeine and sugary snacks like chocolate and usually have a mug of chamomile tea before bed and yet I still feel like I've not had a good nights sleep. I'm looking for suggestions that don't involve buying some online medical product but more like something I can get at the local supermarket or pharmacy. Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: Is there something wrong with the medical conventional medical model?

As practicing physicians shouldn't health care be delivered to the patients if it is effective rather than a bias be towards a certain system. Should doctors be independent and not have a bias towards companies or Pharma? Currently the medical profession is effectively an outlet for Pharmacological companies to distribute their products. Pharma massively influences the training of physicians, develops products which it tests itself and puts on the market and tells physicians it is safe. Whether it is or isn't is not the question. What I am asking is, is this independent or are physicians being marketed to aggressively by a company wanting to sell its products? What would be wrong with Doctors prescribing herbs or other modalities if it was safe to do so? Why do all prescriptions seems to be exclusively for drugs made by pharmaceutical companies? Should product safety testing really be carried out by companies hired by the manufacturers? Isn't there going to be an element of bias. Instead shouldn't a central body be set up to independently test product safety and design testing protocols. Your comments please.....Why should you be able to patent a herb? Did you make it? more

Resolved Question: can someone help me re-phrase this?

A blind or blinded experiment is a scientific experiment where some of the persons involved are prevented from knowing certain information that might lead to conscious or unconscious bias on their part, invalidating the results. For example, when asking consumers to compare the tastes of different brands of a product, the identities of the latter should be concealed — otherwise consumers will generally tend to prefer the brand they are familiar with. Similarly, when evaluating the effectiveness of a medical drug, both the patients and the doctors who administer the drug may be be kept in the dark about the dosage being applied in each case — to forestall any chance of a placebo effect, observer bias, or conscious deception. Blinding can be imposed on researchers, technicians, subjects, funders, or any combination of them. The opposite of a blind trial is an open trial. Blind experiments are an important tool of the scientific method, in many fields of research — from medicine, forensics, psychology and the social sciences, to basic sciences such as physics and biology and to market research. In some disciplines, such as drug testing, blind experiments are considered essential. The terms blind (adjective) or to blind (transitive verb) when used in this sense are figurative extensions of the literal idea of blindfolding someone. The terms masked or to mask may be used for the same concept. (This is commonly the case in ophthalmology, where the word 'blind' is often used in the literal sense.) double blind A testing procedure, designed to eliminate biased results, in which the identity of those receiving a test treatment is concealed from both administrators and subjects until after the study is completed. Clinical trials are conducted to allow safety and efficacy data to be collected for health interventions (e.g., drugs, devices, therapy protocols). These trials can only take place once satisfactory information has been gathered on the quality of the non-clinical safety, and Health Authority/Ethics Committee approval is granted in the country where the trial is taking place. Depending on the type of product and the stage of its development, investigators enroll healthy volunteers and/or patients into small pilot studies initially, followed by larger scale studies in patients that often compare the new product with the currently prescribed treatment. As positive safety and efficacy data are gathered, the number of patients is typically increased. Clinical trials can vary in size from a single center in one country to multicenter trials in multiple countries. Due to the sizable cost a full series of clinical trials may incur, the burden of paying for all the necessary people and services is usually borne by the sponsor who may be a governmental organization, a pharmaceutical, or biotechnology company. Since the diversity of roles may exceed resources of the sponsor, often a clinical trial is managed by an outsourced partner such as a contract research organization. Clinical trials were first introduced in Avicenna's The Canon of Medicine in 1025 AD, in which he laid down rules for the experimental use and testing of drugs and wrote a precise guide for practical experimentation in the process of discovering and proving the effectiveness of medical drugs and substances.[6] He laid out the following rules and principles for testing the effectiveness of new drugs and medications, which still form the basis of modern clinical trials:[7][8] 1."The drug must be free from any extraneous accidental quality." 2."It must be used on a simple, not a composite, disease." 3."The drug must be tested with two contrary types of diseases, because sometimes a drug cures one disease by its essential qualities and another by its accidental ones." 4."The quality of the drug must correspond to the strength of the disease. For example, there are some drugs whose heat is less than the coldness of certain diseases, so that they would have no effect on them." 5."The time of action must be observed, so that essence and accident are not confused." 6."The effect of the drug must be seen to occur constantly or in many cases, for if this did not happen, it was an accidental effect." 7."The experimentation must be done with the human body, for testing a drug on a lion or a horse might not prove anything about its effect on man." One of the most famous clinical trials was James Lind's demonstration in 1747 that citrus fruits cure scurvy.[9] He compared the effects of various different acidic substances, ranging from vinegar to cider, on groups of afflicted sailors, and found that the group who were given oranges and lemons had largely recovered from scurvy after 6 days.yes thats the whoel point og havign rich parents, you dont have to do any work, you have the fanacial security! just get a rich husband and i have even more money more

Resolved Question: Why is it that morbidly obese people always blame someone/something else for their condition?

Before we start, can I make the following statements: - Yes, I know that often obesity is caused by psychological/psychiatric issues and over-eating or 'comfort eating' is often the product of some serious underlying issue; - I am not addressing the FEW people who are genuinely affected by medical matters in becoming clinically obese. My big problem here is the 'blame' culture. People who are obese often cite being "big boned", "not having time to exercise", "not having time to eat properly", or even "my mother/partner serves big portions." Should the first step be people realising that they alone (with the exceptions I gave at the beginning) are responsible for their weight, and no one else? There is ALWAYS time to exercise, ALWAYS time to try to make something healthy. My only possible point of concurrence is when families with little money can only afford food which is cheap, and stodgy/unhealthy. In which case, the government should address this when tackling the obesity problem, especially prevalent in children. Is this harsh or fair? more

Resolved Question: Why is the cost of medicine and medical devices so much higher in Ireland than in the UK or Northern Ireland?

Why is the cost of medical products and medicines so much higher in Ireland? If I lived in Northern Ireland, my son's Aero-Chamber asthma inhaler would be £7 on prescription and £13 without. I have to pay €50 at my local pharmacy in the Republic of Ireland. Flixotide is €17.50 here and £9 in the UK. Ventolin is €9 here and £2 in the UK. An Omron nebuliser is €85 here and £40 in the UK.I'm not sure about the NHS explanation because I can order an Aero-chamber inhaler or Omron nebuliser from www.chemistsdirect.co.uk and have it shipped to ireland for the UK price. This would be true for prescription meds though that I cannot order. more

Resolved Question: stomach problem advice as not getting anywhere with drs?

Hi, I am sure I am not the only person with this problem, but I can't get to the root of it via the drs. When I was born I had an extended (is that the word, rounded stomach, not a flat stomach), . I'm early 40's. I constantly look pregnant. I eat healthy and always have (yes like most people I have had the odd cake, chocolate bar, etc), but have always eaten good food. Since I was 15 I become a semi vegetarian (i eat fish, but no meat or poultry). My food consists of lots of fruit and veg (minimum 5 portions a day), fish, vegetarian foods (beans, pulses), occasional cereal. I do eat some dairy products. A few years ago my doctor told me it was IBS & I was given peppermint capsuels (they didn't help at all), I was then told I had colic (now and then I get sharp abdominal pains the kind that you feel like you have been cut in half...the best description i can think of! (but a friend has told me that there is no such thing as IBS its a condition drs give things whent hey don't know whats happening). About 15 years ago I had a ultrascan to see if there were problems (there were no cysts just told womb introverted, think that's what was said). In November last year I insisted my dr send me for a scan, with reluntance he did. Nothing showed as being wrong. It doesn't matter what I eat, I watch portion sizes, I seem to put on weight. The last few days I have noticed it doesn't matter what i eat, whether it be a main meal or a piece of fruit I feel bloated for a good hour afterwards and its uncomfortable. Does anyone have any ideas where I can go next for advice, or what i can ask my doctor to refer me to a specialist for the stomach problem. I did have a test for celiac in January and got told it was negative, but surely if you don't eat wheat you wouldn't have any ige antibodies to show a positive result. I went to a kingsologist (muscle testing) a few years back as not getting anywhere via the drs and was told I had an intollerance to wheat. My dr referred me to a dietican (had apt earlier this month, waste of time), she looked at what I ate and said oh you eat healthy, why you don't loose weight I don't know, its a medical issue. I feel like I am running around in circles and its getting me down...i hate looking like I am pregnant. I have two questions I gues, one is why I always look pregnant, can be referred to a specialist, secondly any ideas re the weight gain/loss. Any advice must appreciated thanks to all who answer my question. more

Resolved Question: Is this the reason I never eat Margarine?

Pass The Butter .. Please.. This is interesting . . . Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavourings. DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter? Read on to the end...gets very interesting! Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine. Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and only because they are added! Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years . And now, for Margarine.. Very High in Trans fatty acids. Triples risk of coronary heart disease . Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol) Increases the risk of cancers up to five times.. Lowers quality of breast milk. Decreases immune response. Decreases insulin response. And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING! Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients with PAINT These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance). You can try this yourself: Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things: * no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) * it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast? more

Resolved Question: Right they ban the legal high drugs but alcohol kills far more people right?

Should 'legal high' drugs be banned? A ban on several drugs known as "legal highs" has come into force. What impact will the ban have? The substances, including GBL and BZP, become Class C drugs, with a possible two-year jail sentence for possession. Scientists, officials and police officers have voiced concerns that these products have been sold openly across Britain and on the internet, despite evidence that they can be harmful to health. GBL was linked to the death of medical student Hester Stewart, 21, in Brighton last April. Her mother, Maryon, campaigned nationally for the ban. Will making these drugs illegal make it easy to control them? How can the ban be policed? Will it stop people using them? Are there other ways to tackle the issue?meanwhile its fine to kill yourself on alcohol just keep pouring it down your throat this christmas , just as long as you dont try taking any legal highs .personally i think they should ban wasps and bees as they sting you and im sure a few people have died as a result , anyone agree ? more

Jon Rappoport Interviews a Retired Vaccine Researcher http://drbenkim.com/articles-vaccine-risks.htm Why downplay the fact that in Canada 170 thousand vaccine doses were recalled due to death and harmful side-effects?..... www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=16192 Additional Details Congressional Report on a Vaccine Mercury-Autism Link Ignored for Six Years http://groups.yahoo.com/group/newslog/message/2386 A leading American doctor and researcher uses peer-reviewed material from Scientific Journals to educate us on the vaccine risks http://products.mercola.com/swine-flu/20091103.htm http://www.thestar.com/comment/columnists/article/682615 Thirty-two deaths and 12,424 adverse reactions ranging from dizziness to autoimmune disorders were reported in the United States in the two years after the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was launched, according to a new study. The study, published in today's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, said the rate of adverse reactions to the Gardasil vaccine reported between June 2006 and the end of 2008 was consistent with results from earlier clinical trials, and for other vaccines. In other words, during any vaccine program, deaths and harmful side-effects from the vaccine itself are not only aniticipated but expected by the medical field. Why aren't the general population informed of the expected fatalities and side-effects that will arise during vaccination programs? more

Resolved Question: Dose Yahoo answers allow companies or people to spam answers that promote products or websites?

I hated an answer I read so I checked the user and found they gave 900 answers that all promoted the same website/product. I sent this explanation with my "report"... ***How many companies could do this before your site becomes a useless joke populated by advertisers. If you review any 10 answers this "PERSON" offers you will see that this “Company” is OBVIOUSLY promoting their product/website. The problem is they offer false/biased opinions. I have reviewed the Answers they have offered and find many conflicts etc. that make it clear that this is just a marketing tactic for a company and not a person sharing their experience or opinion. Bad advice is expected and actually helpful on a site like your in that it will spur debate. Bad, wrong or unpopular opinions are WONDERFUL and I am not suggesting that you limit any well meaning and legitimate people. Reading the answers that this “company” has scattered through the “pain” questions make it clear that there is no personal advise or experience being offered. ALSO... the medical advice given is often wrong or misleading. I chose this answer to "report" because it is an example of this bad advise. This “company” is incorrect to say that heat will “not do anything to heal your body.” Heating (or cooling) an injury is very therapeutic. Increasing and/or decreasing blood flow to a region of the body is the most obvious advantage but there are many other. Please eliminate this member and delete their answers. No one will miss them.*** Is the company abusing the system? Will Yahoo care? more

Resolved Question: human rights discussion?

i was having a discussion with my brother and he said my way of thinking is wrong and compared me to a nazi for some reason. and i want to know your opinion on it. The basic discussion was about criminals in prison having rights, and i used as as an example a story i read in the paper a few weeks back about an 18 year old that had raped 2 children one of which was about 6 months and the other i think was about 5, I said people that take the innocents of 2 children should forfit there human rights and become property of the government and i believe they should be used as basic lab rats or sentenced to the death penalty and there organs harvested so that the good people that have not committed a crime can live. And as for the lab rats part i mean in places that animals are being used to test Beauty products on or medical tests that have to be done. opinion's?Miaowrrr- is that what you word tell to the parents of the child. more

Resolved Question: Is violence the basis of capitalism?

This is a continuation of my all time favorite Y!A question. (Link to most recent previous post appears below.) I started posting this question on a recurring basis because other than a couple diehard contributors, I otherwise find the limited response puzzling. Ask what qualifies Obama as a communist or why we should not have universal healthcare and the apparent anthropological, economic and constitutional scholars might trip over one another to respond but ask those same impassioned partisans to defend fundamental philosophical tenets of capitalism, and both their confidence and expertise suddenly vaporize. I hope objective review of the content continues to expose the flawed logic and latent violence of capitalist ideology. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AoK77TYX4eQBDqrkEgWNt0whBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20091030095145AAie4lR THE ORIGINAL QUESTION: How does a socialist respond to the ‘Economic Calculation Problem’ criticism? THE ANSWER? LIKE THIS: In the ‘Economic Calculation’ portion of the ‘Problem’, the capitalist theorist supposes that the consumer purchase under the regulatory influence of price ‘conveys’ ‘information’ that determines production and distribution then in the ‘criticism’ portion, consequently concludes that without the ‘conveyance’ of that ‘information’, the socialist model cannot determine production or distribution with the same ‘efficiency’ as the capitalist model. Clearly (by virtue of the ‘criticism’), the theorist demonstrates concern over both ‘efficient’ ‘conveyance’ of ‘information’ and appropriately responsive production and distribution, and in addressing that deep concern, the theorist selects for both the ‘conveyance’ and the ‘information’, the single criterion of… THE PURCHASE… but what ‘information’ does the purchase really ‘convey’? Does the purchase convey unconditional approval of the product and price? Does the purchase convey unconditional approval of the enterprise that produces and delivers the product or unconditional approval of labor standards, policies and practices involved? Does the purchase convey unconditional consent and unconditional approval of the economic processes by which the production and distribution occur? The correct answer to all these questions is - - I DON’T KNOW! - - and neither does the capitalist theorist know the correct answer to any of these questions but evidently, that is insufficient cause to preclude the theorist from leaping to gross assumptions unfounded nonetheless… yet still the most crucial, critical and profoundly revealing question of all is… What ‘information’ does the human that DOES NOT purchase the product ‘convey’? How ‘efficient’ is the ‘conveyance’ of that ‘information’? Does the human that does not purchase the food product ‘convey’ the ‘information’ of imminent starvation? Does the human that does not purchase the medical treatment product ‘convey’ the ‘information’ of imminent death? For so sincerely concerned and altruistic a humanitarian the capitalist theorist, so committed to the betterment of all humankind, that’s a pretty glaring ‘inefficiency’ of ‘conveyance’, is it not? In the ‘Economic Calculation Problem’ (as in all capitalist theory), the ‘consumer’ ‘conveys’ ‘information’ with the ‘purchase’ while the human that does not ‘purchase’ the ‘product’ DIES because THAT ‘information’ warrants no ‘conveyance’ if it does not arrive in the form of a PROFIT; because by the standards of the capitalist theorist, the human that does not ‘purchase’ the ‘product’ IS NOT A LEGITIMATE HUMAN and HAS NO RELEVANT INFORMATION TO CONVEY. 1) The quality of the ‘information’ is a gross unfounded assumption that produces a flawed premise. 2) The efficiency of the ‘conveyance’ is a gross unfounded assumption that produces a flawed premise. 3) The inference of ‘consent’ and ‘approval’ is a gross unfounded assumption that produces a flawed premise. 4) The capitalist theorist never says the words, but underlying every theory, every calculation and principle, every sweet gooey morsel of sentimental euphemism and scrumptious chewy esoteric jargon… is DEATH FOR THE INFERIOR that fail to sufficiently qualify for meritorious inclusion.… and that is only my secondary response to the ‘criticism’. My primary response to the ‘Economic Calculation Problem’ ‘criticism’ is… Do we or do we not have big fat mouths we can flap open to tell each other what we want? - and - Do we know how to count? That is this socialist’s response to the eloquent and persuasive, masterfully crafted capitalist theorist’s ‘criticism’ of socialism that contends without the ‘conveyance’ of ‘information’ through the awesome magical powers of ‘consumer purchasing’, COMMUNICATIONS and ARITHMETIC are otherwise impossible. Can we all flap open our big fat mouths and declare what we want? Can we add up all that information to a total sum? Can we communicate, organize, plan, prepare, coordinate, cooperate and THINK? That’s this socialist’s response to the ‘Economic Calculation Problem’ ‘criticism’: > REMEDIAL COMMUNICATIONS, 1ST GRADE ARITHMETIC & HALF A BRAIN <THE COUNTER-CRITICISM: The capitalist theorist evidently concludes that LANGUAGE is inferior to SYMBOLIC INFERENCE as a method for the ‘efficient’ ‘conveyance’ of ‘information’. This is ‘cognitive dissonance’ and it occurs when a given subject focuses too intently on excessively contextualized esoteric minutia, and consequently experiences disassociation with obvious material reality. THE COUNTER-PROBLEM: The socialist theorist supposes that the most ‘efficient’ method for ‘conveyance’ of ‘information’ is LANGUAGE and the most ‘efficient’ method for determination of production and distribution is INTELLIGENCE. This hereby establishes the introduction of the socialist theorist’s ‘Remedial Communications, 1st Grade Arithmetic & Half a Brain Problem’. THE COUNTER-QUESTION: How does a capitalist respond to the ‘Remedial Communications, 1st Grade Arithmetic & Half a Brain Problem’ criticism? more

Resolved Question: My debate with Muslim creationist girls on facebook.?

Hey guys I slammed into a debate with some muslim girls it all started with my facebook status now see for yourself and let me know what do you think? something these creationists said will make you go like ahhhhh PS: I'm a non practicing muslim agnostic.just cause I don't want to pay the tax to be an Atheist. Chef Hamza-If we do discover a grand unified theory of the fundamental forces, it should be in time understandable in broad principle by everyone. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason—for then we would know the mind of the universe. October 28 at 10:30am · She replied. Sadaf Temuri i don't agree to it. Cause i guess every Muslim knows their creator, and the purpose of their existence, and so for this whole wide universe. i guess in these crucial times we have a lot many other important issues of concern, than the Big Bang theory and all.....l November 3 at 8:54am Sadaf Temuri Open ur mind dear.......Allah Pak has made this all easy for us...........just read the Holy Quran! November 3 at 8:56am My reply. Chef Hamza. You are just being ignorant. As for keeping an open mind, just don't close your mind by reading the Qur'an there is far too much to find out (you wouldn't have the computer you are using if we just stuck to the Qur'an). As far as important issues go, medical equipment used by the doctors to save many lives are a by product of our understanding of the universe. Having an open mind means that you try to find out all of the possibilities that account for your existence and the existence of the universe. Mysticism has it's place but don't confuse it with reality. There is a very beautiful universe out there waiting to be observed. And it would be better to not comment on cosmological matters if you can't understand them, The Big Bang is not the grand unified theory or the theory of everything.... Read More Everyone finds their own purpose in life, that's' what humans do. So, my dear I suggest that you open your mind and stop being ignorant. She replied Sadaf Temuri It was said for some people in the Quran and hadith...that they see the truth, but do no accept it. about to explore the universe? have u ever explored what is said in the Quran about this universe??????? Are u not aware that the mention of world's shape as a sphere was made in Quran centuries before it was ever proposed or accepted? indeed how ignorant we are........we do not read what we have.......do not believe what our prophet told.......and those non believers who have no liability towards our religion read our books and explore them........unfortunately every great scientist and philosopher einstien or newton, has read them, learned them. but we are so great in our knowledge we do not even consider it! Every thing has a reason and a creator......and believe me or not whatever the process may be...........it all leads back to one Mighty Power! no fusion, no reaction, no formation can take place without His Will! a lot of people confuse Purpose and Sub-purpose. Allah Pak created us for a reason........for the love of our Prophet....and gave us a purpose.........to obey Him and His Prophet and most importantly understand His Religion. dear this is the purpose of our creation, our existence.....and then to test us.......He left us with choice.........the choice of our sub- purpose. for some its to earn........for some its fame, knowledge, relationships, explorations, discoveries........etc.... Read More u may explore anything..........but explore believing that Allah is the Sole creator of everything.......innovate things but have faith that this all belongs to Allah! we come in this world, make relations, earn lots of money, fame, see all good and bad........live our life however we like.........but ultimately we all end up in the same place.........and whether in this world you are accountable to anyone or not..........you will be answerable in His court about every word, move or thought u made in this life. Allah Pak or His books dont need proof............Noetic science is relating our beliefs and Quran and doing a huge research on them and finding all the answers mankind is looking for............the after world.......soul.........beliefs........faith.......thoughts.....u must have known that Quranic verse meanings all deeds good or bad depend upon our thought ( Willingness) and Noetic science has proved that a subsequent change can be attained in anything whether atmospheric or human behaviour if we believe and give concentrated thoughts about it. dear.....learn and see all that u want...do what u like...but do not defy what Allah Has said or what our books refer....they are your greatest asset and best defense in this life and the next. And just to mention.....computer is onc more

Resolved Question: does vimax really work? (specifics on why it doesn't)?

does vimax actually work? because i've been on the internet for 2 hours searching through reviews, websites, medical advice and side effects and it seems like its not a scam, its got a 90 day money back guarantee and it looks like its making alot of money. so there has to be some happy customers who haven't asked for their money back. i mean do you think that not alot of men buy it because it 'seems' too good to be true? because i haven't seen anything too against it. (if you don't know what vimax is, its a penis enlargement pill, please type it in google and see their explanation of how this product physically and medically works) it would be nice if i could get a doctor to explain to me why it doesn't work rather than the fact that it just doesn'tobviously I know that they don't make you grow more cells or extra skin. an erection is based on the blood flow within the corpora cavernosa and the corpus spongiosum. so i that blood flow was to be upped, by logic the erection would be larger, if not at least more rigid. however whenever i hear an explanation about opening out the vessels and letting more blood into the penis, i just think "how much can it take before something tears?? more

Resolved Question: What work experience should I do to become a medical student / are my grades good enoug?

Some of my qualifications are early entry (some taken in year 9 / 10 / 11). Will this give me an extra edge in my UCAS application? Also, I am taking Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics. I chose all of them not because I need it, because I enjoy science and maths and want to find out more about them. From my work experience in half-term, I worked on the shopfloor in Boots Pharmacists, and I observed and had lots of questions for the pharmacist there. She said I shouldn't go into pharmacy but medicine instead (as I could get in she said). However, when I looked it seemed a bit stressful for her job (always having impatient customers want stuff done quick, the dispensers always depending on you). Therefore, it must be even more stressful having a life / death situation in your control as well as controlling a big team of nurses, pharmacists etc in hospital as well as working long hours. So therefore, I am looking into one to see whether or not I would like it. Before this I never considered it as nobody in my family has been a doctor. What is the best place for medical experience: in a hospital? What kind of jobs there should I apply for?. How Long (thinking around mon-fri (1 week)). My other areas of interest that I want experience in is science research, chemical engineering and dentistry (not sure what to choose). Will universities look at work experience in other areas of industry as well? However, I want to make sure that I can follow the medical path if I choose to do so. Therefore, would I have a chance of getting into medicine at the top universities if I get AAB / AAA for my A levels? Resolved Question: How does a socialist respond to the Austrian School ‘Economic Calculation Problem’ criticism?

(This is a continuation of my favorite question ever asked on Y!A, by Marvin the Martian. A few of us longwinded oratory types crashed the servers with voluminous content on the original question so I took it upon myself to advance our run-on arguments in the form of a run-on argument. The original question and argument is linked below for reference.) http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=At0uOo8S0NFksHg22DV6d5YhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20091027135831AATaJFh&show=7#profile-info-jiMAtaCraa The Question: How does a socialist respond to the Austrian School ‘Economic Calculation Problem’ criticism? I concede in my initial posting, I chose my most flamboyant and theatric argument in response to the question, and attracted fair criticism for it, so by popular demand, here is this socialist’s dry clinical exceedingly boring technical response to the question: The “economic calculation” portion of the “problem” proposes that price and purchase (and presumably their relationship) ‘convey information’ that determines production and distribution then goes on to assert (in the “criticism” portion) that without the ‘conveyance’ of that ‘information’, the socialist model cannot determine production or distribution with the same ‘efficiency’ as the capitalist model. Clearly (by virtue of the ‘criticism’), we easily conclude that the theorist is ‘concerned’ about both ‘efficient’ ‘conveyance’ of ‘information’ and ‘efficient’ distribution of product, and in addressing those deep concerns, the theorist selects for both the ‘conveyance’ and the ‘information’, the single criterion of… THE PURCHASE… but what ‘information’ does the purchase really ‘convey’? Does the purchase convey unconditional approval of the product? Does the purchase convey necessity, urgency, priority, ability or degree of difficulty? Does it convey that the purchaser prefers nothing else? The nebulous quality of the implied approval & consent is what makes the assumptions flawed premises.)@ oldgit, I advance no defense for "verbose" but in response to any that think dismissive reaction to a participant concludes an argument, I say: This is not MY theory or argument. I did not initiate this. There are men in this world that introduce, promote then ultimately impose and enforce these whacked out crazy ideas. I am part of a whole human constituency that opposes tyrannical economic ideology. My defense of myself and fellow human is legitimate and substantive, and if I am pretentious, verbose and insufferable, that is neither relevant nor does it affect the legitimacy or substance of my defense. You think I'm wrong? SHOW ME! Show us all how wrong I am by defending your position and defeating my argument. Unitl then, I'll interpret your response as an admission of defeat.MY FINAL WORD (for now): I measure and judge modern US laissez faire fundamentalism for what it is: a social and political revolution 29 years old and counting, and I categorically reject all ostentation that laissez faire economics is a mere mechanism of practicality that is unrelated to social issues or moral values. The intellectual force behind the modern US laissez faire revolution is the Austrian School and for 29 years and counting, that school determines US domestic, social, political, economic and foreign policy virtually uncontested, and that qualifies the Austrian School not as a collection of benign academic wonks but as subversive social and political revolutionaries fully aware of their involvement and the impact of their policies. I don’t care what initial intent Mises, Hayak or Friedman might have claimed. Whether they like it or not, they are the founding fathers of a violent social and political ideology.Joe, you are arguing the technical merits (and I respect the fact that you alone have hung in there) but I am not arguing technical merits, I am condemning a violent social and political ideology, and that is the context in which I advance my question. I contest not the mathematical but the anthropological, sociological and historical merit of capitalism. Since the introduction of the first stone tool, human population perpetually rises while demand for human labor perpetually diminishes, both in direct proportion to technological development. Humanity has NEVER experienced ‘economic growth’; it has experienced technological growth combined with only perpetual economic contraction and exclusionary concentration. The capitalist theorist would deny to all humanity the value of its own development and propose ‘incentive’ and aggression as the means for determining meritorious social inclusion or exclusion of the presumably superior and inferior.Capitalist economic theory always applies ONLY to the SUPERIOR that merit inclusion while the inferior simply cease to exist along with their information and any ostensible form of conveyance as well, and clearly, this is not a mathematical argument. The way we practice capitalism in the US today is not a practical mechanism; it is our model for a social order and it is our form of government. If we are not a fully laissez faire society yet, that is incidental. We are 29 years into a firmly established movement with a painfully obvious conclusion. Neither has the last year nor will the next three change that. I’m enjoying this so much, I’ve decided to keep posting this question on a recurring basis at least for now. I’ve revised it a bit and I hope the next version will emphasize the social and political context with more clarity. I look forward to critique on that basis and more argument as well.BONUS for entertainment purposes: The argument that government is some kind of corrupting force, or that humans are fundamentally ‘evil’ and can’t be trusted with power, is in my estimation, a bizarre and convoluted argument. The proposition that humans cannot be trusted with government and will always degenerate into tyrants bent on perpetuation of their own power is cynically pessimistic while the proposition that only private enterprise can restrain this natural ‘evil’ with the calm and soothing influence of creativity, productivity and incentive is painfully naïve optimism. You can argue humans are fundamentally ‘evil’ or fundamentally benevolent but you can’t argue that human nature varies by job title. If you can’t trust humans with the power of government then you can’t trust them with the power of private enterprise, but most critically, what exactly has private enterprise done in the last nine years to prove its fundamental and natural benevolence? more

Resolved Question: What is the worst medicine you've tasted? And what would you have liked it to taste like?

Isn't this a great idea??! an ice cream that is so good for you, it could come with a doctor's prescription???! i wish all ill people could have their medication in such delicious treats... New Zealand scientists are developing an ice cream that is so good for you, it could come with a doctor's prescription. Researchers at the University of Auckland are working with dairy giant Fonterra to create a "medical dessert" which has shown encouraging signs in combating the side-effects of chemotherapy in cancer sufferers. The ice cream, called ReCharge, is using active ingredients from dairy products to relieve diarrhoea, anemia and lack of appetite in people undergoing chemotherapy. Participants in a trial have been eating a 100 gram tub of the strawberry-flavoured ice cream each day. "The two bio-active milk components developed for ReCharge have the unique potential to assist the body in coping with the side effects of chemotherapy," Fonterra's chief technology office Jeremy Hill said in a statement. http://in.news.yahoo.com/137/20091029/778/tod-new-zealand-researchers-use-ice-crea.html more

Please help me :) thanks x Look at the newspaper advert below and answer the following questions: The government will not let us tell you how good this mouthwash is, but our users know how effective it is! Our natural product is made from ten different naturally occurring plants, including aloe vera, well known for its antibacterial qualities. It is: Scientifically proven to kill bacteria Completely safe when used as a mouthwash Soaks easily into the skin Protects you from infection 1. Why does the government want to prevent medical claims for this mouthwash? 2. Describe the tests that you think you should have been carried out to make the claim that it is " Scientifically Proven to kill bacteria" 3. Why might you mistrust any claims made by this company? 4. Mr Skeptic commented that "it must be crazy to think that a plant could kill something as difficult as MRSA". What do you think? 5. Describe the sort of investigation needed to be able to say that the mouthwash is "completely safe". Thanks :) XD more

Resolved Question: Advice on starting your own business?

As a couple with a young family, we are sick and tired of slaving away for ungrateful employers who do not give us any recognition or reward for our efforts at work. Both of us are in our late 20s. Lately, we have been discussing the possibility of re-establishing a family business of my father that I dissolved when he passed away 4 years ago, once the recession eases. All the foundations are still in place, and I feel we would not really have to do a lot of work to get it up and running. He was an insurance broker selling a wide range of products and services including mortgages, life assurance, pensions, private medical insurance etc. Before my wife had our first baby, she was studying for her CEMAP which she promptly stopped due to maternity leave. As she has a background in finance having worked with numerous banks, I have encouraged her to start studying for the CEMAP again. Although, I have no specific insurance experience, I have worked as a Research Analyst in the property and finance sectors. I have a Masters degree in Business Management, and have a good level of business knowledge. Are we thinking along the right lines? What else should we be thinking about? Do I need to do any qualifications if I want to sell insurance products? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Explain the causes of Mr. X's abnormal liver function test results. Explain some of Mr. X's symptoms .........?

Mr. X has been admitted to the accident and emergency department. He has been involved in a motorbike accident, is unconscious and has leg injuries which will require surgery. Witnesses at the scene of the accident told ambulance staff that he did not appear to have proper control of his motorbike and drove headlong into the path of an upcoming vehicle. Before Mr. X can undergo surgery for his crushed leg his blood needs to be tested to see if he has any underlying conditions which need to be taken into account before surgery commences. He also shows signs of internal haemorrhaging and may also require treatment for blood loss. The blood results have now been returned from the laboratory emergency services and it now transpires that Mr. X has raised blood alcohol levels and was drunk at the time of the accident. His hospital medical records have been traced and reveal that Mr. X has been receiving ongoing medical care for liver disease due to alcoholism. He has been attending monthly clinics to monitor his liver function. Before Mr. X can receive blood products for transfusion they need to be screened. Mr. X will show specific symptoms of liver disease. Explain the causes of Mr. X's abnormal liver function test results. Explain some of Mr. X's symptoms of liver disease (such as jaundice and prolonged clotting time). What advice will doctors give Mr. X to improve his prognosis? more

Resolved Question: Fossil fuel plays a vital role in food, should these black stuff be preserved for food, now?

Petroleum plays a vital role in food, but nitrous oxide is a by product of fossil fuel in combustion engine, which inactivates vitamin B12 (also called cobalamin) by oxidation. B12 deficiency causes encephalopathy, the inflammation in the brain, let alone sensory neuropathy or myelopathy. These big-headedness affect the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system. Lonesome George was a case in point when the few big-headedness ventured into Galapagos for food, with snout in their trots, now shed crocodile tears with tortoise. These parasitic brains are helping themselves again with fossil fuel, a generation from now will label these rarest black stuff potent symbol of past industrialized civilization. With the dispersion rate per square mile on many part of the world now reached critical points, and the tilting of the biotic potential on human population as a result of advance in medical science. If the remaining black stuff are not preserved for vital industrial and agricultural usage now, no military power than can assure world security in a generation's time.http://www.lot64.com/Thoughts1b.asp more

Resolved Question: Legal highs and drug hair sample testing.?

Will legal highs show up in a hair sample drug test? I am from the UK and have a police medical to join the police and will have to undergo a hair sample drug test, which detects drugs for a few months until the hair fully grows out. I was considering trying mitseez and charge from herbalhighs.com, but im wondering whether they will be detected in this test. I'm not sure on the date of my medical but it will be a few months away and im worried about them being picked up, especially since the government are looking to ban some of the substances, BZP, I think??? The website says that none of their products no longer contain BZP. I also took some legal highs at global gathering bout a month ago and i'm getting a bit worried about this, but think my hair will have grown out by the time of the test. I'm a male by the way with short hair. Have not got a clue what mitseez and charge contain? Any one shed any light, Thanks more

Resolved Question: Have you ever heard......of.......?

Swedish Snus ..........if you are a smoker.......maybe you should look it up,its a less harmful alternative to smoking.......and it gives you the freedom to get your nicotine fix....where ever you like(there is no smoking ban on this)...And as quoted in the medical journals....is 100-1000% less harmful infact there is health gains to made for a smoker to switch to using this!!!!!....and before you say to yourself....oh dear oral cancer....there is reports that even this is less than smoking....as for pancreatic cancer....its the same as a smoker or even less...depends on which reports you follow. Ok then .....its banned for sale in the European Union(except in Sweden....that's ok you can buy off line until they lift the ban ).....the only people who seem opposed to lifting the ban .....are the company's who make and sell nicotine replacement products(e.g gums and patches)....as they would lose profits.....if this alternative to smoking was locally available. Even the anti smoking lobby....have said its prefer ed...alternative to smoking as it doesn`t affect anyone else around hence the fact you can beat their public smoking ban(not mine as it....takes away freedom of choice...but hey) So before i finish i`ll go futher....i like to dispel comments from the less Intelligent people on here leaving their embarrassing misinformed comments.....It not Chewing tobacco.....so is Less Harmful than smoking.....it doesn`t stink unless you already have bad Breathe....you don`t spit as with Swedish Snus there no colllection of Spit(as with Chewing Tobacco). And before you say anything i can assure you i`m not salesman.....only a person .....feels that people should be informed of this stuff as it could save lifes...and return some kind of mature choice...which the smoking bans have taken away...by the way they have been implemented(e.g giving the people the right to vote over it!!!!! not doing it by the door as its been done)Sorry bluebell have to disagree with you .....i think you may find it`ll save lifes....and ok lessen the profits of the drug companysOh dear....Happy Murcia and star...remember what i said about embarressing comments Maybe you should really have knowledge of something before passing comment Its been fully tested......for about 200years....and now by the medical proffession....2tall look it up its not chewing tobacco.....so you haven`t tryed it lol more

Resolved Question: Yesterday I had an abortion at 12+1 weeks...?

NO i was NOT killing my baby before you judgmental people start on at me. I had found out my baby had died between 9-10 weeks but my body hadn't passed it. I went and stayed at the hospital for the day had the medical abortion where tablets inserted into me made me go into 'labor' so i could pass all the 'products' from inside me. It was a horrible experience. I was just wondering if anyone else has ever had to go through this? How did you feel afterwards? Did you go there alone? I am so sad... I keep crying all the time, and i can't stop thinking about the tiny but perfectly formed little thing that i passed :( I know im not alone feeling like this i know it happens a lot... just wondering if any of these people are online today to give their feelings thoughts on it all... and anyone else who wants to put their thoughts down too....... more

Resolved Question: Spice is banned in the UK: Was this the right thing to do?

Does anyone think this was the right thing to do or unnecessary? as far as I'm aware, it was a taxable product, no-one really got harmed, the people who I have encountered who've smoked it seem non-violent, intelligent and unaffected. Yet it is now banned, probably because of mass hysteria and big pharma lobbies. People who once smoked to relax at night and go to sleep will go on to seek more illegal alternatives which means that the black market will be much more powerful. Not to mention other 'legal highs' as the media call it will be banned... People with genuine reasons to smoke it (medical, creativity, recreational, spiritual or relaxant purposes) are being criminalised, for the simple 'crime' of putting something into their body on their own volition and daring to think different. I have lost all faith in politics and legal system. We know prohibition doesn't work (1930's America *cough*) That's my opinion, what about yours? more
