I was told it was fixed and then right there in the hospital I stood up and called for a ride on the hospital phone in the room and blood started squirting from in between the stitches on my wrist and a bubble formed under my skin. She kept saying I don't know how this could be but I thought to myself that they should of did something to the artery so it would grow back together or stop bleeding, she called a doctor in to look at it and he said to just apply more pressure. Now being Sunday evening my wrist is black and blue, and healing also my forearm is starting to form a black and blue from approximately the middle of my forearm to the bottom of my palm, is this normal or were they suppose to tie off the artery before stitching me back up? more

I'm sure I'm going to get some not so nice answers to this question because face it.....there are some smart a** people in our society but I would really like some advice. I'm 38, married and over the last few years I have had bad luck in my career. I was a medic in the U.S. Air Force for four years and finished about 2.5 years of college. In 1997 I got an entry level job with a medical device company and worked my way up through that company for 4 years. Then I became a territory manager with another medical device company, selling surgical supplies. I worked there for 5 years and left that company to become a regional manager with a medical diagnostic company. I covered the entire Western United States and managed 4 reps. After about a year and a half the company was bought out and they let everyone go. I then went to work with a medical consultation company as a territory manager, and after 8 months they laid off over half of the sales force, including me. My latest job was a regional manager for a medical distribution company. I managed 6 reps and was doing exceptionally well, then the company was bought out and they let everyone go. Throughout my career I won numerous sales awards and had great success. I love medical sales, and the medical industry in general, but I'm tired of going from one job to another. I've made upwards of $170k a year and while money is nice, it's not everything. Stability is more important than money. So, here I am now. Unemployed and considering my next move. I'm back in Chicago now and have considered going back to college to finish off my degree. If I go back to school, I'd like to focus on a specialty like a Physician Assistant degree, Nursing, or even something out of the medical field. I would like to finish off my degree, or move into a different career that will start me off around $60k minimum. The thing that is hold me back from finishing my degree is my age. I know that I'm not that old, but I would rather be working and building a new career than going back to school. What are some other options? What could I do with a little bit of training that will make a respectable income, have higher income potential, and provide more stability? more

Voting Question: Broken wisdom tooth socket in jaw bone during wisdom tooth extraction. Bad dentist?

After my wisdom tooth was extracted about 6 weeks ago, it was fine for a couple of days (though quite swollen), and then on the 2nd night it really started to swell and became very sore. I just lay in bed and slept the next day, taking OTC painkillers, etc. I called the dentist and he said it was quite normal. For at least a week after I could only just open my jaw wide enough to fit my thumb between my front teeth. Since then I noticed a lump growing on the inside of the lower wisdom tooth socket. I went back to the dentist today, and he said that the bone around the socket had broken during the extraction (first I'd heard of it). He said it was quite normal, and was healing nicely, but it appears the broken piece of bone is slowly making it's way out through my gum, and is just starting to protrude. He assured me this is normal, and that the bone may continue to break through the skin, and that I should just cleanse it with salty water. However, he sounded a bit worried (like he'd made a mistake). Is this normal? I need to have my wisdom teeth out on the other side soon as well, but I'm beginning to wonder if i should be seeing a different dentist... I was a little concerned when he never told me not to drink through a straw, and also said if bleeding continued after the first hour to use a clean handkerchief to continue applying pressure to the wound (as opposed to supplying me with a second surgical pad). Bit worried. Do I go to a different dentist? more

I think I might have done this. I cut my arm while taking a component out of my motorcycle. I treated it normally, with some alcohol and a bandage. This worked for a while, but about 36 hours later, while I was asleep, I woke up with a terrible, wincing, burning pain in the skin near the injury. I felt horrible; I vomited and was running a serious fever. I got up, looked at the injury, and the nearby skin with red, sore, and developing blisters, and the extent of the redness looked like it was spreading out from the wound. My first thought was "oh, crap - this is something serious, isn't it?" I didn't quite panic, but I was VERY alarmed. The first thing I did was to plunge my arm into a bath of 3% hydrogen peroxide, and I SCOURED the skin until the blisters were gone. This was painful enough to make me barf, but I was scared for my life. Then I made a poultice out of raw honey and chopped raw garlic. I ingested about a half-cup of it with a few swigs of whiskey, then I took the rest and smeared it all over my bloodied arm, getting it into the injury. Then I dumped a some ice into the tub and cooled off my fever while my arm soaked in the honey-garlic. I sort of passed out and fell asleep for a few hours, and when I woke up, I felt chilly, and the swelling had gone down on my arm. The redness had receded a little bit. I rinsed the arm off, gave it another peroxide bath, and applied more honey and garlic. Within 24 hours, the "hot" redness was largely gone, leaving only the scars from my original injury and the skin I had scraped off earlier. I kept going through the peroxide-honey/garlic regimen every four hours or so. I even had to go to the store in a heavy jacket to get more supplies. Within 48 hours, the injury was fully normal. There was no redness; only scarring. This was a month ago, so I think there wasn't any infection still lurking deep in the flesh of my arm. Why might my method have worked, though? Had I gone to a hospital, the normal treatment would be surgical removal of flesh combined with massive doses of antibiotics - something I wanted to avoid. more

My father had major surgery last Thursday. They did what is called wedge surgery on his lungs. He had something going on with his lungs so they went in and took out 9 different biopsy's from his lung. He is not a smoker..but rather has something that doctor's can not figure out. The only thing we know is it started from a hernia surgery done 10 years ago when the doctor left surgical supplies inside of him. They removed the supplies last fall but since then has gone down hill. Anyway, my question to the medical community is this...can he actually live through all this? They had him in a medically induced coma until late Saturday and now he lays there in pain and cries. He can't move he is in so much pain. My dad is 83 years old and I'm so scared for him. They said this surgery is really common, but we have not gone through it before and I'm scared for him. He is so scared that he won't be able to talk again (ventilator) but they removed it last night from him. His voice is horrible sounding and one eye has gone blind. This is just too much for him. They never told him he would be in ICU, medically induced coma and a ventilator, nor did they tell us. He woke up and doesn't know what to think. Please help me give him some answers. more

in 2006 I was in a car accident, that left me with double vision, blurriness in my eye (like when you're not wearing glasses even when you are...) and a massive black eye, cuts and goose eggs on the brow on on the cheek just under the eye. The double vision and external injuries went away but not the blurriness, so I was sent to a neuro ophthalmologist. He did a bunch of extensive tests including an all inclusive field vision test and this test where they put electrodes on your head, and make you stare at a moving checker board on tv to test the signal your optic nerve gives your brain. after all the tests he concluded that I had optic nerve damage with blindness in my Peripheral vision, caused by trauma. He stated it was permanent, but non-progressive (wouldn't get worse.) and that there was no surgical options to correct the problem. So that was that. Well, this past saturday... after hanging out with friends all afternoon, I was at home, sitting on my comfy chair watching an SVU marathon while playing slots on my computer, just chillin. Suddenly around 11pm, I got this weird light in my eye... that is usually a warning of migraines. The light got bigger and bigger till it encompassed the whole of my eye, (The eye with Optic nerve damage.) then things suddenly turned this filmy brown color in that eye, and then went black. I may be foolish looking back, but I thought it was a nasty migraine coming on, since I had bad migraines in the past... so I took some aspirin and a pill for nausea. but no headache or nausea ever came... I felt fine. So I finally started to worry, and by 1am my mom had me at the E.R. they called in an opthamologist and he gave me an extensive exam, plus an MRI. He asked if I suffered any trauma besides the car accident, and just the month before I fell on ice, breaking several ribs and hitting my head. He was theorizing that it was possible a bloodclot let loose in a blood vessel to the optic nerve. that clot was cutting off the optic nerve's blood supply, which caused the blindness in that already compromised eye. Even though he had an idea that was the problem, he said that I would have to go to a neuro opthalmologist to verify his findings. So he sent me to the one he said was the best, the one I had already seen who diagnosed me with the optic nerve damage to begin with. I saw the doctor from the ER once more on Monday, when through another set of tests, and said the same thing... I needed to see the doctor who diagnosed me in the first place, to confirm what his suspicions were about the clot. That's when it gets weird. The Neuro Opthalmologist's office told me, either I come that same day right after leaving the doctor I was with, or he wouldn't see me for weeks. There wasn't time to get the records of what the opthalmologist thought, nor to get a copy of the MRI and ER reports from the hospital. So without paperwork, I thought I'd have to go through all the tests again. I get there, and his room is being worked on... (the room with all his equipment.) The guy kept telling him he'd work around us, or come he'd back later. He told us this like a million times, and each time the doctor told him it wasn't necessary. I wondered how he was going to do anything without the eye exam equipment. So he took me into a room he borrowed from a non-eye doctor. He put a pen light in my eye and made me look up and down, side to side. Then he pulled out a 3D book and gave me glasses and told me to pick out the 3D images. I didn't see anything 3D. He told me to look again. I didn't see 3D that time either, but he INSISTED that I did. He told me to look again. Nothing. Finally he was so insistant I started pointing at anything. Then he told me to grab this fly's 3D wings. The wings weren't in 3D, but again he was insistant, so I thought, how hard is it to figure out where the fly's wings are in 3D? There was a 2D image, So I pointed to the 2D wings. after that he asked me a bunch of personal questions like, am I married, is there a chance I'm pregnant, am I sure I'm not pregnant, do I live at home with my mom, yada yada. that was the extent of my exam... 3D images I couldn't see that he insisted I could, and a pen light. he didn't dialate my eyes, he didn't use any actual eye equipment... it was just a pen light and 3D book. Then he proclaimed I had perfect vision. (Perfect? Just a year ago he gave me thousands of dollars of extensive tests that proved I already had a compromised optic nerve with loss of perhiphial vision.) I asked him how that was possible and he said "two ways. Hysterical blindness caused by stress, feeling of helplessness or guilt... or you're looking for attention or money. I suggest you go home and don't pursue this futher." WHAT? Ok, since it happened at home with no triggering event, and the car accident was settled, I couldn't financially gain from it. OK um.....I just got my braces off recently and they did an X-ray and said I need to get my wisdom teeth out THIS YEAR! my parents both say I should do it this summer so I won't have to go to school after wards. The problem is that I have big fear of surgery and needle they have freaked me out since I was little and last time I hid under a table (i was 12 and i am 13 now) I was crying and everything so obviously i have a really big fear and won't let anyone get near me with a needle. A doctor wanted to test my blood for heart disease and I told him hell no. I freak at the sight of blood and almost pasted out looking at emo people's cuts, IV supplies and my own blood i hate the smell. my mom suggested I take Valium before I have the surgery. Will Valium help? they want to put an IV in me to knock me out but like I said I can't look at any type of cut on someone's arm even mine and it hurts like hell even thinking about it. So my questions are....Will Valium help keep me cool and not freak and jump off the table when they come at me with IVs, needles, and surgical tools? A few months back I had a healthy happy father. One day his side started hurting, the pain was so bad my mother took him to the ER. He thought it was probably something to do with his appendix. They did an ex-ray and found something in there. They told my parents it appeared to be a sponge of some kind, they went on to do an ultra-sound. They found what they thought was some sort of mass with a surgical supplies on it. They tried to drain it, rather than to operate but the pain became too much. They decided to operate. Now keep in mind my father is in his mid 70's. Well during surgery they found a mass the size of a very large softball (but larger) in this mass was 2 surgical sponges, a foot and a half of gauze, string and netting from a hernia surgery he had about 8 years earlier. After surgery dad had a drain in him. Something kept draining out of him, but the doctor said "he wasn't even sure what it was" but after 3 weeks (last Christmas Eve day) they took out the drain and closed up the hole. He has been getting worse and worse. He is so cold and can't get warm. I went out and bought him an electric blanket and he keeps it on high and has blankets over it and is still cold. Does anyone have any idea why? What we can do for him? I feel like he is dying and nobody is trying to help him. He can barely walk from his bedroom to his chair and never gets dressed, but sits with all his blankets. He is super pale too. If anyone has an idea, could you let me know what to do for him.
