About a week ago I had a pain in my abdomen, it wasn't that bad of a pain, but it was noticeable so I went to the ER. After pushing around on my stomach the doctor said he thought it was a pulled muscle, but would wait until my blood work came back to be sure. Sure enough my blood showed slightly elevated levels of lipase (level was 150) and so I was diagnosed with a mild case of acute pancreatitis. I later got a CT which showed a mild inflammation of the tail of my pancreas. The next day I had an ultrasound and everything including my pancreas looked normal, no inflammation. They do not know the cause but they say it could have been that I drank excessively during a graduation party 4 days prior. My question is it normal for pancreatitis brought on by a weekend of drinking to take 4 days to show symptoms (ie abdominal tenderness)? Again the pain was mild and only felt when I laughed or coughed. Also my doctor said that I can only drink one beer at a time now for the rest of my life...I'm 26 years old. more

I've been asking a lot about this condition lately, and I'm sorry if it is starting to get old, but at 9pm at night, you don't have a lot of other sources to go to! How should acute pancreatitis be treated? The reason I ask is because I have been recently diagnosed with it, however not treated, and my GP thinks I have been clinically neglected on the hospitals part, and even gave me a statement I could use if I wish to follow up a complaint for Clinical Negligence. GP says given my medical tests, results and symtoms, that I should have been in hospital, on an intraveinous drip given fluids (Due to the dehydration caused by not being able to keep anything down- or in), and surgical intervention or at least consultation should have taken place. Instead I was sent home with no medication, doctor at the hospital di not beleive it was pancreas related as (In his exact words) "It can not be the pancreas, as you do not drink alcohol or do drugs". He said he consulted with the surgeon on call, but when asked what the sugeon said he would not say anything. He did not give us the surgeons name, and when we requested to see him, he said he was too busy. Anyway, all of that aside, GP (Who has worked many E.Rs) says treatment should have been initiated based on my results, but obviously it wasn't. I'm still having the same symptoms, so obviously it's not just a bug that's taking it's sweet time to pass. How should pancreatitis be treated normally? Thanks, and please no rude comments. more

Long story short...my brother is an alcoholic. He is living with my husband and I temporarily so I'm seeing firsthand his actions and the consequences. To sum it up, I know my brother was hospitalized shortly with acute pancreatitis last year...and from what I can gather from docs, his liver functions tests have come back very high ever since. He was told to stop drinking but never did. Back then, he suffered from pain in his stomach and had chronic nausea and vomiting. Now, however, he is having chronic nausea and vomiting several times a week but says he feels absolutely NO pain. I have read that as pancreatitis progresses, the pain can actually subside. Anyone have experience with this as being true? He refuses to go to a doc..although this evening I told him he must if he wants to stay with us for the time we agreed upon. I think he is finally willing to go now but it wouldn't surprise me if he bailed on that plan and moved out. By the way, I have pleaded with him to stop drinking and get some help but his denial is unbelievable. He actually spends a day vomiting and then goes right back to drinking the following day and actually WONDERS why he continues to vomit. THAT is how deeply in denial this man has fallen. Please share your knowledge and experience if you have it (regarding the pancreatitis with no pain symptoms). My husband, ironically, is recovering from a similar path in his life (with drinking) but is doing great currently so I feel like I've been there already once and really don't enjoy seeing someone else in my life go down the same road. If someone is able to help with these questions I would be very grateful. The doctors are of some help, but very little. I am just looking for answers as to why this is happening to my dad. My dad was admitted to the hospital Saturday night with acute Pancreatitis. By Tuesday morning he had become extremely disoriented and confused- didn't understand where he was. He bagan pulling out his IV's and becoming very agitated. He was on Dilluadid and Adivant to keep him comfortable. Tuesday morning he was transferred to the ICU because the nurse noticed him struggling while breathing. The doctor's had to put him in restraints so that he would not pull out the new cathader under his collar bone administering his drip. The doctors are now concerned my dad has ARDS, or Pneumonia. I realize this is a test by exclusion but they seem more than convinced based on his extrememely low oxygen level of 50% that he does in fact have ARDS. He is on a respirator right now and heavily sedated so that he will not hurt himself becoming agitated while the respirator is in. My questions are, how does Pancreatitis actually induce ARDS development? And can his oxygen level possibly indicate his improvement with the ARDS and possibly indicate survival upon its improvement? I have looked up ARDS for the past day and feel I know a lot about the disease but there are some questions that the internet can't answer, and that the doctor doesn't have time to answer. Any help is appreciated. This disease is life threatening with a so-so survival rate. Also my dad is a 63 year old smoker. Smokes about half a pack a day and drinks about two drinks per night (despite the doctor's implication that he is an alcoholic- definintely had to read him the riot act on that one). After deciding it probably wasn't JUST the alcohol that could have cause these "withdrawal" symptoms of disorientation and confusion they turned to Benzodiazipine withdrawals since my dad took 1-2mg of xanax each night before bed. MAIN SYMPTOMS: Poops in his crate every time we leave. (Has done this since he was 9 weeks old) Pants really hard, a lot. (Doesn't matter how cold I have the room and I have it pretty cold, I'm pregnant) His heart is always racing it seems, when you pick him up you can feel it pounding so heart. The throwing up in his crate everytime we leave. (Even if we just leave him 15 minutes) Thats gone on since Sunday. Very very hyper and nervous acting. Constantly pacing, humping things, or hiding. He has always been an antisocial dog. He has always been irritable, never easy to get along with. We thought the humping was him trying to prove dominance but discovered it was actually a nervous behavior in him. My husband, myself, and our Terrier are all very laid back individuals but our Poodle has always been very high strung. I'm starting to wonder if there is something more going on than Anxiety. They have checked his thyroid in the past and the results have been a little off from normal, but never enough to be too concerned about it. Now he has always pooped in his crate whenever we would leave him but now he is throwing up his kibble, pretty much undigested. In his crate when we leave He seems nervous whether we are home or not. I dont get it. He typically is only crated or left alone maybe an hour a day. Sometimes up to two hours. I'm a housewife, soon to be stay at home mom so its not like he lacks attention or anything ThanksHe has always had a hard time keeping his weight. He never drinks a lot. 7 months ago I had pretty bad pain, not horrible, could still walk and drive. I thought it was heartburn, went to pharm and got pepcid. It didn't go away in the hour as said by the pharm. The pain wasn't severe, just bad enough to call the dr. to ask how long it takes pepcid to work. Two hours later went to Dr. She felt around, I had bowel signs (which I've read I wouldn't have it if AP), normal blood pressure. She ran a blood test and everything came back normal except amalyse and lipase were quite high. Within 2 days I was feeling normal, but she continued to take blood tests 1 per week, and enzymes were quickly going back to normal. Took 3 weeks to normalize. Again, all blood tests were normal in others except white blood cell count was high (14). With everything I read, except for the enzymes, this doesn't sound like your typical AP. I eat normal foods, some fatty, and drink occasionally. I haven't had contact with the dr. since. She said don't drink, but when I called her after a week or so she said I could resume normal activities. I just assumed that meant all normal, so I continued drinking in moderation. Again, no problems. Any advise? Does the levels represent a certainty of pancreatitis? No other tests were performed. No 'radiating' pain, didn't go to hospital, ate soup and jello for 4 or 5 days, and didn't drink alcohol for a few weeks. Resumed normal feed, and drink wine, but never more than 1-2 on occasion. Resolved Question: Update on cause of death in my beloved dog's mysterious death?

Hey people- A couple days ago I posted about my beloved dog's illness and after battling 24 hrs with it, she unfortunately passed away. We didn't know why she had died. We got her lab values back and they were all over the place. Like I said in another post also, she had low glucose, high liver panel measurements (like for the ALT or AST or whatever it's called), and a high WBC count. We called our vet again to see if he could look over the labs again and tell us what exactly she died from. He did, and then also given her symptoms plus the labs, my dog died from Acute Necrotizing Pancreatitis. I am posting this because just in case anyone else experiences something like this, I want to let you know what to look for. This disease tends to affect older dogs around 13 yrs old (my dog was 13). Her symptoms were the following lethargy, depression, somewhat "snappy" towards our other animals when they came around her water dish, she was very thirsty and urinated a lot. We found her laying down and she wouldn't get up and when we lifted her, we noticed she had wet herself. She eventually, a few hours later, developed a neurological problem- she was disoriented, her eyes were twitching (it unfortunately threw our vet off into thinking she had vestibular disease), her nose had become dry (a healthy dog has a cold wet nose), she lost bowel control, when the vet pressed on her belly area, she yelped in pain- please, if anyone's dog does this and they are older, order a CBC quick. Her blood pressure also dropped very low. She eventually started having seizures and went into shock. The shock makes it hard for a dog to breath and get oxygen. This makes them hyperventilate and pay attention to their face. My dog's cheeks would "balloon out" as when a person is also out of breath from say running up a hill. This eventually makes it so hard to breathe, they stop breathing and their heart stops. They tried resuscitating our little Annie but failed. Acute means it came on suddenly and believe me it does and they die within a day. Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas and necrotizing means that necrosis is setting in. Which in laymen terms means Annie's pancreas died/stopped working. She was fine two weeks ago, but now she's in doggie heaven. So, if you have a dog that has these symptoms and you are trying to have them tested for everything and nothing seems to be coming up. Try doing a CBC and fast. more

Voting Question: Does anyone know how long belly pain and bloating is supposed to last after acute pancreatitis in a 4yr old?

My 4yr old son was put in the hospital for a week after being diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. He has been home now for almost 2 weeks. He has been having some belly pain everday and bloating at nighttime. He has also developed a rash that just wont go away. I called his gastro doc and he cant see him until next Tuesday. I just wanted to know if anyone knew how long these symptoms would last....and if its normal or if I should be a little concerned. Because it is really concerning me. If anyone has any info on this please let me know. Thank You more

Resolved Question: What brings on pacreatitis symptoms?

Nine years ago I was admitted to hospital with acute panreatitis, caused by gall stones. I was pregnant at the time, so had to wait for gall bladder op, but had it removed a few months after giving birth. I was warned that my pancreas had been damaged, and I may suffer symptoms in the years to come. I have had a few bouts of pancreatitis, usually after a heavy night on the drink!! So I very seldom drink now at all. I've lost 3 stones in the last 4 months following weight watchers, and after a typical low fat dinner tonight, I've had sudden severe pains, it's a bout of pancreatitis!! I dont know what's triggered it, and I'm not sure what to do. Can anyone help me with ideas what has brought this on? I'm in agony!! Thanks in advance XX more

Resolved Question: What are the symptoms of gastritis? I had acute pancreatitis a month ago, but CT scan & sonogram were normal.?

I have upper back pain, my intestines and stomach are always gurggeling and I also have some (not much) pain in the upper part of the abdomen right at the sternum. It feels like a small tingling or burning sensation. Could it be gastritis? I take Nexium every night, but that only helps a bit. I eat and get full right away, but a little while later I feel hungry again! The Dr. gave me Creon to help digest food and it hasn't really shown improvement. more

Resolved Question: Could these be symptoms of acute or chronic pancreatitis?

I have been to three different doctors already and nobody has been able to help. I have had trouble with this pain now off and on for years, but lately, in the last month, it has been everyday. Whenever I eat, I get nauseated, sometimes I vommit, and I have a severe pain in my upper right quadrant; it's like a throbbing pain and the only way I can get even a slight relief is if I curl up into a fetal like position. No I don't want to be gross, but I also have green, oily, loose stools in the last 3 days too and I haven't ate anything green or closely resembling that color. The doctors have done blood tests and not found anything abnormal, but shouldn't they do an ultrasound or something? How does pancreatitis get diagnosed? more
