Resolved Question: Gallbladder Removal - Who Has Had Theirs Removed?

I have had severe pain caused by gallstones and gallbladder inflammation now for over a year. The pain can come once a month or as frequently as 3 times a week and can last for anything from 20 minutes to several hours. I have put off having my gallbladder removed as I have read stories on the web about people regretting having it removed. But now, my doctor has told me it is getting more serious and I really need to have it taken out, especially as my last attack brought on the early start of pancreatitis. I am 39 years old, 5ft 8 and a normal weight for my height. I eat quite healthily during the week but have been known to indulge in something a bit more tasty (but not so healthy) at weekends. I have cut out all the major things that were triggering my attacks, such as eggs, cheese, fried food etc. and have tried drinking lots of apple juice, lemon juice and olive oil etc. as recommended in "alternative to gallbladder removal" advice pages. Since my last attack, I was too scared to eat as I had only had a jacket potato with baked beans to eat before the attack and during this time I lost 5lbs in weight. I have read about people who have put on huge amounts of weight after having the gallbladder removed, have still had pain, severe diarrhea and other complications. Obviously I know that if I have it removed I will not be able to eat junk food all the time, but I would like to think that I would be able to eat a little bit of what I fancy when I fancy it as any normal person would? My questions is really to people who have had their gallbladder removed or have genuine knowledge of this operation. Did you regret it or are you pleased you had it removed? Are there any other alternatives (apart from the flush)? Im trying to get a more accurate idea of the pros and cons of the operation as there seems to be a lot of stories on the web of people who have regretted having it done due to all the issues that come with it, but not so many stories of people who have never regretted having it done. I only know 2 people who have had it removed, in both cases it was over 20 years ago, but they both report no side effects, no problems, no change in diet, no weight gain, no diarrhea etc. So I would really like to know of anyone who has had this operation more recently and their personal opinions. Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: Anyone have experience with Colitis in dogs?

I have a one year old Great Dane that has had chronic stomach issues for months now. Nothing I've tried has eliminated the problem and I've spent almost $1000 at the vet's and haven't found a solution that will work yet. His symptoms are intermittent loose stools, lack of appetite and weight loss. Some days he eats and poops normally and then he goes through phases for a few days where he doesn't want to eat much and wakes me up in the night to go out. I have wormed him (with Pyrantel pamoate) and treated him for whip worms (with Ivermectin) just in case, but he's had 3 negative fecal samples done at the vet's advice so I really don't think there is any chance that it is parasites. He had a blood work up that came back normal. Then the vet did another blood panel to test for Pancreatitis which also came back normal. The vet then said he thought it was Colitis and sold me Hill's WD prescription dog food. The first ingredient in this food is corn and it just made my dog poop 5 x more than he normally does and he seemed to lose more weight. I hate to act like I know better than a vet, but the WD formula is used for dogs that need to lose weight. My dog is already extremely skinny and not eating well. That doesn't make sense to me to give a skinny dog a diet formula. The vet said he was prescribing it because Colitis can be helped by a high fiber diet. Does anyone know of a good way to add fiber to the diet other than the prescription food? I have my dog on Blue Buffalo Salmon and Potato formula right now. He seems to have gained a pound or two back, but he's still having stomach issues. He's developing bumps on his muzzle also so now I'm wondering if he's having a reaction to something in that food. Does anyone have experience with Colitis or anything like this with their dogs? I'm open to any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks!@Shelter Puppies Rule - I did have him on a raw diet for 3-4 months. My other dogs did wonderfully on it, but my Dane still had stomach issues and it was difficult to get him to eat enough so he did not gain any weight. more

Resolved Question: Can I drink this? Medical help?

I have had acute pancreatitis about a month and a few weeks ago and I'm am on the mend, The doctors don't know what caused it but i was put on a bland diet. Because of the hot weather im getting a bit tired of just water because i cant have fruit juice or anything with acid in it. So my question is will it be okay for my to have ONE can of diet coke? because it has no sugar or will my pancreas get upset? Thanks more

Resolved Question: Canine chronic pancreatitis diet?

Hey! I don't know whether to buy the prescription food from the vet or just cook my dog homemade meals.. I'm worried she won't be getting adequate vitamins or whatever. Does anyone have any recipes suitable for a dog with chronic pancreatitis? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: what kind of food should I feed my 8 year old yorkie?

He seems very healthy all the time, active and energetic. But he had through a period of 4 years 3 episodes of pancreatitis. After the usual treatment (antibiotics, IV, etc )he did well. Kept with bland diet for a week, but after trying to incorporate slowly regular dog food, he didn't tolerate it at all. I have tried everything, even the science food. This happened every single time.So for the last few months, going against my vet advice, I cook for him;skinless boneless chicken breast boiled with carrots, green beans, rice and potatoes. He loves it, but my concern is if this diet is nutritious enough. more

Resolved Question: Getting Acute Pancreatitis- help...?

When I was 11 years old I was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. I had never had any alcohol in my life so that one is off the list. I had to have a nasogastric tube in me for 3 and a half days while on a IV and i wasn't allowed to be put back onto liquids for another two weeks. when i kept the water down they moved me onto food and eventually they let me out. in outpatients, i saw every specialist that i could and i had ever scan and test available including that for gallstones and billias slat, and its neither of them. I had numerous MRCP scans and ultrasounds, both showed nothing, my family and i also had a test done to see if this was hereditoy in my family or if i could give it to my children should i ever have any. the results said no. In the end they put me down to an UNKNOWN CAUSE. 4 years later (just a few weeks ago) I got acute pancreatitis again and then had a relapse after that, i had to go through the whole traumatic experience again with tubes, scans and an IV and i am now back at home recovering. in a few weeks i will have another MRCP scan. HOWEVER I NEED YOUR HELP i know that these scans will just come up with nothing again, but i am very anxious to find out what causes this, anything at all apart from the mentioned above. If there are any nurses or doctors out there who could shed some possible light on this matter i would be very grateful. Right now i have been put on 15mg of lansoprazole to have everymorning before food. and i am on a BLAND diet. if that helps. also anyone who has been or is in a similar situation then please feel free to email me =]Also thanks to anyone who replys with sensible replys. I know that im not going to get a straight 'this is whats wrong with you' i just think you guys might have some ideas of your own that are not in books and that you will explain it better to me than a bunch of doctors who use way too many long and technical words that just give you a headache and make you not want to ask another question x more

Resolved Question: my cat has pancreatitis/pneumonia?

okay, so, i'm not an expert or anything in cat health. ALL of my cats have ALWAYS been healthy, therefore leaving me no reason to actually worry. until now. i have a neutered male cat that's about 9 years old, who started, out of nowhere, to sleep a lot more than usual, lost a little weight, stopped eating so much, and didn't want anything to do with water, which he's always loved. after about a week of very little eating/drinking, and the same lack of energy, we took him in, the vet spent 5 minutes with him, took a blood/urine test, and the next day called and said he thinks oreo has pancreatitis. so, i went in, got clavamox (i'm pretty sure that's what it's called) and some of the science diet a/d stuff, which he was mildly interested in in the office. came home, thought everything was fine. a couple days later he started breathing really funny, and coughing a lot. my mom called the next morning and we took oreo back in, getting an x ray this time, which showed a BUNCH of fluid in his lungs. right. he didn't say anything about the pancreatitis, or how he should be doing, but we got medicine (i don't know what this is called) that's supposed to help with the pneumonia and causes him to drink/pee more. yippee. it's been about five days since then, and i'm taking him back in on monday, but there's been VERY little improvement. i've done research, and some people say that i'm supposed to force-feed him and others that say it's bad. i don't know what to do :/ so, i guess my overall question is, while he's drinking now, and peeing fine, what should i do about the food? the vet i go to i don't trust at all, and he's not helpful in the least. should i continue to force-feed him (i do about 1/4 a can at 7 am, spread that through the day, and 1/4 a can at 7 pm, spread through the night, along with both medicines at the same time), or should i commit him to the vet's for IV fluids and food fed right into the intestines or something similar? i don't want to hurt him - and i want him to recover; it hurts to see him so thin and not being able to really help him... i don't want to put him down, either. i mean, if it's necessary because he's just going to die anyways from this, then... yeah... to ease his suffering, but... please don't suggest that. it isn't what i want to hear when there's a little hope for him left. any answers are appreciated. thanks guys. (:he won't eat /anything/. we got the hills diet a/d stuff because that's all he showed any level of interest in. )x that's kind of messed up. it probably suffered worse from the poisoning than it would have taking it to the vet to be euthanized. but that isn't my business. it's done with, right? and i don't know if this is helpful but he hasn't had a fever at all, and he hasn't thrown up either, or had diarrhea... the only symptoms are the difficulty breathing, fluids in the lungs, anorexia/weight loss, and fatigue. more

Resolved Question: Ground Flax Seed for Dog Incontinence?

My 2 year old 16 lb pug/boston mix was recently diagnosed with spay incontinence. She was prrescribed Prion (which i refuse to give her due to side effects that can develop over time) I have decided to introduce flax seeds into her diet because they can be converted to estrogen and should have a similar effect that Proin would without the side effects.... However, I have heard that flax seeds can also cause constipation and pancreatitis in dogs... My question is, can anyone reccomend a dosage? I was thinking of a half tsp a day ground up? more

Resolved Question: Major dog food dilemma. One dog needs a more balanced food one can't handle it. whats a good food for both?

My one dog a small 8lb dog needs a food low in fat and protein or he gets very sick she he is on California Naturals Herring and Sweet potato. (He has had pancreatitis and other gastrointestinal issues CN has been the best food ever for him with those issues and his food allergies, he also can't tolerate corn) My other dog is a larger (still a small dog) more sporty dog, a Terrier mix who is extremely athletic, she needs a more balanced diet. We feel feeding her such a limited diet is causing her more harm than good. We thought about putting her on Innova and leaving him on California Naturals but that just doesn't seem to be option right now. (That would be around $60 a month vs $30...then again them each having their own bag would last them 2 months each...so it may be doable...a 15lb bag of CN lasts the 2 of them a month) So in the meantime I need a food they will both thrive and be healthy on, any suggestions? The issue with getting the two different foods roughly 30 bucks a piece is spending the $60 a month vs $30. Its all that money coming out at once on a budget. I'd like to have them on the same food more

Voting Question: borderline gestational diabetes? Barely passed 3 hr test?

I had failed my 1 hr test horribly. So my ob wanted me to do the 3 hr. On all of my levels I passed by 1.5-2 pts but the 3 hr draw I failed. So because of this my OB has placed me on the border. I got my results over the phone and go see him on the 21st. The nurse said he is going to talk to me about my diet. But my question is since I am so close to the border of having it, should I just go ahead and tell him to treat me as if I am one? I have 11 weeks left of my pregnancy and knowing my luck I will be diabetic before the end of it. I never developed this with my first pregnancy. So far with this pregnancy NOTHING has been going right for me. I developed anemia, pancreatitis, gall bladder disease and now this. The only thing left to go wrong would be my blood pressure. It's just so frustrating and starting to seem like nothing is going right!I am already on an extreme low fat diet, because of the gallbladder disease. Seriously how much more strict could it get? more

Resolved Question: PLEASE help me find some fat-free low protein recipes for my dad?

My dad has to adjust his diet a lot due to a bout of acute pancreatitis and he's having a hard time. What can I make him that's fat free or very low in fat, and has almost no protein? He's never had to diet before because of his metabolism and me and my mom haven't either so we really don't know anything about nutrition. He loves (well loved) chocolate and practically lived off of meat. But now he's pretty much vegan against his will and will probably have to follow this diet forever. He's tired of it already and since he's otherwise super-healthy and fit (a full time martial arts master) this won't shorten his life as long as he follows the rules so he has a loooooooooooong time to go. Dessert recipes are especially appreciated. Maybe a fruit pie or cookies or cakes with applesauce instead of oil would work? more

Resolved Question: Cat Vomiting, Tested for everything still no answers. Please help!?

I posted a questions a couple of days ago and i greatly appreciate the feedback and answers. Unfortunately my cat is still having problems. I am going to list his symptoms and everything he has been tested for and hopefully i will get some much needed advice He is a 6 year old male cat, he is an indoor cat. His symptoms are Vomits all food, it is undigested and is accompanied by white mucus and white foam. He is no longer able to hold down liquid including water. he has lost almost 3 pounds in the past month. He is still in good spirits, but he does sleep a lot. (Please also check previous posted question) Tests: all were negative Heart worm Feline Aids Feline Leukemia IBD Pancreatitis Heart Disease Barium Dye Test X-rays Blood Work He does not have an obstruction, he has been given antibiotic, cortisone and anti nausea medicine, he also was switched to prescription diet z/d. We have no idea what to do next. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I will be watching the question posts all night so if you need more information or have questions please check other question or ask me. Thank you in advance. Note: He is now staying with our vet so he can better take care of him with injections and fluids. we have gotten three other vet options and all are stumped.he has perfect blood work, liver and kidneys are good and functioning properly, barium dye test was perfect and passed his system within three hours.his food was changed to hypoallergentic food and he is given distilled water that is changed at least six times a day. He was keeping water down until sunday, now he keeps nothing down and the vomitting is immediate after he tries to ingest anything. He was given Florta Fortia Probiotics. We also tried kitty ensure, tuna juice and organic sodium free chicken broth, nothing is staying down. He is "yaking" before i guess you can say that, what it actually seems like is he is trying to swallow it back down to prevent from throwing up. He is still in good spirits and had an appetite up until sunday when everything just went south.Sorry didnt clarify, the vomit is clear muscus with white foam with some undigested food. Its not rabies, the vomit is classified as respitory fluid, But his lungs are completley clear. As for cleaning products all our cleaning products were approved by our vet when our dog had allergies this past summer. All the cleaning products we have are all pet friendly approved.he has been tested for all parasites and toxins/ poisins. Sorry for all the added details my brain is in overdrive..smartty-pants thank you for the infor. My vet has discussed the option of exploratory surgery and said there is a chance he wont survive be how week he is I will pass the information on to him. Thank you very much more

Resolved Question: Questions about Acute Pancreatitis?

Ok I'll try to be brief...... I am studying abroad right now and do not have access to my doctor until next summer. Im 22 btw. I have not drank since last summer (7 months) and its been REALLY tough. Ive made a lot of new friends here but the fact that I cant drink SERIOUSLY injures my social life. (I cant just go to bars and sit around while everyone gets drunk---ive done this a couple times and its just weird for everyone). So anyways my acute attack was relatively mild considering what Ive read about the disease---I was not hospitalized or put on any IVs. I just took painkillers for 1 day and thats it. I just was on a super strict diet for about 5 days. Then it went away. So my questions.....and I btw I WILL WAIT TILL I SEE MY DOCTOR AGAIN BEFORE I START DRINKING AGAIN. Im hoping he will say something positive, but I just want some general questions answered. Will I be able to ever drink again?? And even if I can....Will I be able to get DRUNK again? If my doctor says no.... Is there any kind of medication or even procedure which will allow me to drink/get drunk again? I just need some INFORMATION. I already checked some sites like WebMD and stuff.......but if you know any more helpful links post them here. I REALLY need to know......not being able to drink is absolutely destroying my social life.....and no one is availible to me to give me advice.........SO PLEASE GIVE ME SOME INFO!!!! Whatever the case is I WILL NOT TOUCH A DROP until I see my doctor........This is just for general information. Thanks for the help more

Resolved Question: Undergoing an ERCP procedure: Yes or No?

I am 28 and have a history of abdominal pain. 2 Years ago I was taking birth control pills but had to quit because I was developing pancreatitis, although I never got to the point of having an actual attack. After I quit the pill I got pregnant (Duh!) 3 months later and my son is now 10 months old. During that time I was pain-free and had an IUD with no hormones. I don't drink or smoke. I do hit the fast food places a little more often than I should not and every now and then I got mild discomfort on the same area. I weight 148 pounds. Well, last month I had a cold and took Tylenol Multi-symptom twice a day for about a week, and after that my IUD was coming out of my cervix and I had to take a Plan B double pill (those have about 10 times the amount of a reg. birth control pill) to avoid another pregnancy now. My period started off time and I got mild to moderate pain on my left abdominal side with nausea, vomit and dhiarrea. X-rays and ultrasound showed uncomplicated pancreatitis, no gallstones. Dr. ordered to take Nexium and see a GI. GI ordered MRCP a few days later which showed also no gallstones, good liver, and decreased inflamation, etc. blood tests before and after the situation showed a bit higher than normal levels of amylase, lypase, and sugar; days after fat-free, sugar-free diet, levels back to normal. My period is over and I feel the pain is starting to subside slowly each day. I am sticking with lots of fluids, fruits, vitamins, veggies, wheat products and no alcohol, dairy, fried foods or lipids whatsoever. I am going to see the dr. back on Thursday. Given my history and the risks that ERCP has... should I go for it or rather wait and stick with a non-fat diet and no drugs that can hurt my tummy?? Too many stories of ERCP gone bad... more

Resolved Question: acute pancreatitis question?

hi I was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. over the weekend and spent a day and a half in a hospital receiving ivs and only drinking fluids. This was due to my alcohol use. I only drink socially but when I do I binge drink. Im not an alcoholic just a normal college kid. Im having a hard time accepting the fact that I may be able to ever drink again but is there anyway I possibly could if I closely monitor my alcohol use and drink in moderation and cut back a lot. Obviously my health is #1 and I am planning on taking an indefinite time off of drinking until I fully recover from this. It sucks bc my friends 21st bday is in 2 weeks and me and a bunch of friends were planning on going to celebrate in vegas for spring break in 1 month. The doctor said I recovered really fast bc I had been taking good care of my body otherwise (diet) etc. So will there be any possible way I can come back or is alcohol a done deal in my life? more

Resolved Question: BARF diet for a dog with a history of Pancreatitis?

I have a very sick dog lets just say, and I want to get her started on the BARF diet. Though I'm not sure, she has had pancreatitis so I'm not sure if i should start her on it or not. If so, how should I introduce it to her? should I do at first for a week what she's used to in the morning and raw at night. and should I do cooked or raw meats since we aren't quite sure how high her immunity is right now. And which meats should I avoid giving? I know pork definitely but is there any others? She just got dewormed.Patong - obvious troll is obvious Sherri- Thanks, but I have a feeling that the vet isn't being exactly truthful with us - we could switch but most vets are against the BARF diets anyways.al l- I wouldn't be feeding her the ordered packaged food, I'd get it fresh from a grocery store. I would freeze it for 24 hours, thaw it and then feed it to my dog. Also dogs digestive system is built to kill bacterias so if a bacteria did actually get into the system, it would have to go through alot to do so. Which is why its rare for it to happen to a dog that's eating a raw diet. Also dog food that is packaged with all the fillers and preservatives are filled with bacteria's and harder for the dog to digest and are more likely to get a bacterial infection. Curtis M- I think she got on the line of having it, but we treated it immediately and she hasn't had an issue since (this was about in may last year) My dad had given her ham without telling anyone and she came down with it. And really? raw pork? well thanks I think I'll just switch then.TruKidz- Hmm ok that sounds good, yeah I never really thought of dogs eating grains and vegetables much in the wild so I think I'll just switch to prey model. And I said not pork because they always warn for dogs that have pancreatitis to not eat it since its high in fat. Maybe that's just cooked pork though - Thanks! that helped a ton! more

Which of the following is the most important risk factor predisposing to this patient condition? a) Low fiber diet. b) Smoking. c) Alcohol consumption. d) Viral hepatitis. e) H pylori infection. f) Coffee consumption. i thought answer was alcohol consumption. we know that bile is able to get through bile ducts b/c urobilinogen is present in the urine....and biliverdin is not present in poop....so for some reason bile is not staying in the intestinal tract...i thought this is a hepatic jaundice from liver failure. the amt of bilirubin is slightly elevated (perhaps d/t a b12/folate deficiency...causing anemia). but then i think it may be the alcohol answer choice also i support b/c of the gallbladder being enlarged....if he had gallstones that are 2ndary to the booze consumption that would be further proof as to why bile is not being seen in feces...perhaps he may have pancreatitis too. that would explain the weight loss. any help is appreciated...i feel dumb on this q more

Resolved Question: My dog hasn't eaten in 3 days, what should I do?

I have a 9 year old boxer/lab mix that hasn't been herself lately. The past few months she hasn't been eating her normal amount of food. About two weeks ago, she started vomiting a lot. Last Saturday, I was out of town, and my mother took her to the emergency vet because she hadn't eaten in a few days, was vomiting up her water, and had bloody diarrhea. The vet said she was dehydrated and put a water pack in her back. They ran some blood work and did an abdominal x-ray. Nothing showed up, other than her pancreas was inflamed. The vet wanted to keep her overnight to hook her up to an IV, but my mom decided against it (mainly because she thought the dog would be more comfortable at home). They gave her an antibiotic to give her every 12 hours. They told my mom to wait 12 hours to give her water. If she kept that down, we could feed her a bland diet of hamburger and rice every 4 hours. She kept her water down and was eating regularly until Wednesday. On Thursday, my dad took her to our regular vet for me (I couldn't get out of work), and the vet said she was still dehydrated and she has pancreatitis. He told him to keep giving her the antibiotic the other vet gave us and also gave us another one. He also told my dad to give her an antacid every night at bedtime. She still wouldn't eat Thursday night or yesterday. She is very lethargic and only gets off the couch or chair to go outside. We can bring her water dish to her, and she will drink. She turns her head at food and starts to gag when we bring food to her, though. My sister and I got her to eat two pieces of meat, but that's not enough. Her eyes are still very animated, though. She barks when someone comes in the door, and she wags her tail when we talk to her. I just don't know how much longer she can go without eating or what to do. The emergency vet told my mom last week that the next step is an ultrasound. I talked to our vet, and he told me that he couldn't get us one until later next week, but he deals with the emergency vet and the emergency vet suggested we go there. I called to make an appointment, and they told me they needed a referral. With the referral, they can't take her until Monday. The only way we could possibly get one sooner is to admit her to the emergency room again, but they can't guarantee us one. I'm just at a loss here. I love this dog. I've had her since I was 14, and she was only 5 weeks old. I don't want to see her starve herself. Is there anything I can do?She normally eats Iams Large Breed. She has eaten it all her life.Thank you so much Field of Gold! She ate several plates of chicken and rice! more

Resolved Question: I may have to put my dog down and I wanted to ask a few questions.?

I have a female pit-bull who will be two years old in March. When she was 8 months old she was diagnosed with Demodex, she got treatment for it and it went away. Maybe a month later she got sick and was throwing up and losing all her hair again. I took her back to the vet and she was diagnosed with Pancreatitis. We changed her diet to the ID prescription dog food and we don't giver her table scraps but she will from time to time get sick and throw up and not want to eat or drink. The skin issue was never solved until last October. The vet said she had Staph bacteria infection in her skin. She was put on antibiotics for a month and she didn't break out again until just a few days ago and now she isn't wanting to eat or drink that much. My husband and I have done everything we can think of for her and have spent around 1500 dollars in vet bills in the past year. I feel bad because I don't know if she is in pain and we can't afford to keep taking her to vet. My husbands work requires us to travel around the U.S. and it doesn't make the situation better. We also don't know anyone who would take her and be able to spend this kind of money on her. And I've already called an adoption agency for just pit-bulls and they told me they can't take her beacuse of her health issues. I have never had to put one of my dogs down before and I don't know what else to do. Does it make me a horrible pet owner to have to resort to putting my dog down ? Has anyone else had to put their dog down because they couldn't afford the vet bills ? more

Resolved Question: My dog is sick with abdominal pains. What might it be?

My dog (a little chihuahua X)came down sick Wednesday evening. I noticed earlier that afternoon he was acting a little funny by laying in my other dog's crate...which is odd because he hates crates. Anyway, I went to feed all the dogs a couple hours later(there's 4 total in the house), and noticed that he didn't want to eat, so I heated up a little wet food for him, which he ate. At this point I felt his stomach and noticed it was REALLY hard and tight and he seemed quite under the weather (his tail was down, and he usually has a tail that curls over his back). I was so concerned with how tight and hard his stomach felt that I brought him to the emergency vet within a half hour of noticing this. There were 2 critical cases ahead of us and one doctor, so we ended up waiting 2 hours before my dog was even seen. All the emergency vet did was feel him and take x rays. He said his stomach felt normal (even after I stressed that it wasn't normal for my dog). The vet said everything looked normal on the x ray--no twisting or sign of bloat, but that there was a lot of food in his stomach (and I hadn't fed him much that evening before taking him). That vet put him on metoclopramide, and sent us home. Noticing that he wasn't getting any better, I brought him to my regular vet (with the ok from the emergency vet) yesterday, before the holiday weekend. The regular vet gave him subcutaneous fluids, took more xrays, ran a blood work panel and a snap test for pancreatitis. I showed my regular vet the x rays from the emergency vet, and he said that in one of them, some of my dog's organs were kind of squished up almost into his ribcage and his stomach size was borderline normal, but enlarged. In the x ray taken yesterday, his organs appeared normal, and his stomach was at a normal size again--but the lining was quite a bit thicker than normal. The blood work panel came back normal all around and the pancreatitis test was negative. They told me he had an inflamed digestive tract, but they didn't know what was causing it, so they told me to finish the two day metoclopramide from the emergency vet and give him and bland diet (hamburger and rice) and wait a couple days and see. He seems really listless, just sleeping on the couch or in a crate all day unless it's time to eat or someone comes to the door (in which case he'll do a subdued alarm bark). He doesn't seem to be drinking on his own, so I've been giving him some broth (a tiny bit of wet dog food + water) which he'll drink. His bowel movements have been at normal intervals and of regular consistency, although not nearly as big or as much as normal (think the thickness of earthworms, instead of the normal thickness which is the diameter of a nickel<<sorry bad analogy, but you get the point?). His belly continues to be really tense and painful. About an hour ago though, he passed some diarrhea (?). My grandma let him out in the back yard when I was getting out of the shower. She said it poured out of him. I checked it out a few minutes later, and it was nearly all mucus with what I think appear to be tiny pebbles of fully formed stool. I don't think he got into anything. He was only alone for one hour the day he became ill and he isn't the kind of dog to get into anything. The only thing I can think of is that a few days ago I saw there was a recall on cow hooves for salmonella concerns. My dogs got their first cow hooves a few weeks ago. I also started thinking and I realized that just last week I gave them all raw marrow bones that I got from the grocery store. I usually pick them up after a few hours, but this time there was one that didn't get eaten and sat out for a day. But if it were either of those two things, wouldn't the other three dogs be sick as well? I also work at a dog boarding kennel and this dog is one of two I bring to work with me, so illness from other dogs is also a possibility. Please keep in mind--this isn't just a minor digestive upset. I see minor upsets all the time at work, and this is not that. My dog is in a lot of physical pain as well. What I'd like to know is: what do you think is the cause my dog's inflamed stomach and digestive tract? I'd just like some input so I can keep an open mind about the cause of his illness and present some possibilities to the vet if he doesn't improve over the weekend. Thank you so much!He improved greatly Sunday and Monday, then was as worse as he was when this all started, last week. My vet ran a parasite screen yesterday just in case and everything was negative. They put him on an antibiotic as a precaution yesterday. Trying to get an appointment to see an internal medicine specialist. I'd still appreciate any ideas. Thanks again more

Voting Question: Dog acts like he's starving?

My Dog is recovering from panreatitis, and now acts like he is starving. He is a 3 year old beagle Brittany spaniel mix. The vet told us he was on the heavy side, and to put him on a diet food and feed him twice a day. We have been doing this, as well we bought him grain free treats. But in spite of this he constantly acts like he is starving. He licks the carpet for any crumbs my 4 year old may have dropped. He even tries to lick the drool of of my 4 month old's shirt. He is constantly scrounging and trying to get in the trash. He does look like he has lost a little weight, but no more than he needed to. We just spent $900 on the pancreatitis treatment, and can't afford to take him back to the vet. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate them. more

Resolved Question: Anyone had a laparoscopic gallbladder removal?

I'm only nineteen and I'm getting my gallbladder out tomorrow. I am so nervous! I've never had any type of surgery whatsoever or even been under any kind of anaesthesia. Gallstones run in my family on my dad's side. He was eleven sibling and probably about half of them has had their's removed. Two of my relatives ended up pancreatitis as a result of the surgeon brushing up against the pancreas, and one of them actually ended up dying from blood clots. So you can understand how nervous I am. What I want to know is your experiences with gallbladder removal? Can you eat a normal diet now? What was the recovery time like for you? Any side effects? Please help. more

Resolved Question: I have terrible pain on my left side, please help?

Okay, so I've been having excruciating pain on my left side underneath my ribs. I've been to the hospital and the gastroenterologist. Here's the results. All my amylase and tripase levels are normal, so they ruled out pancreatitis. There are no gallstones, either. My liver LFT's are normal. So, here's the weird part. I only get the pains when I'm hungry or eat the wrong foods. The wrong food is anything other than rice, potatoes, or bread. I can only eat carbs without getting the pain. However, I stopped eating carbs for a period of time because of my diet. I'm diabetic (type 2), and 26 y/o female. I do not have IBS, or celiac disease. The pain started suddenly, and sometimes comes and goes. Feels like gas pains or dull ache progressing to sharp breath-taking pain. Ct scan was normal. (No, it ISN'T GAS) Any takers on this one? Serious takers/diagnoses only please. The symptoms do fit pancreatitis, yes. However, it has been ruled out by a ct scan and blood tests. I did have an ultrasound and nothing came back abnormal. So, what symptoms mimic that of pancreatitis, but aren't caused by pancreatitis or gallbladder disease? more

Resolved Question: Can FBS testing give a false negative?

Hi all, I'm 38, I have a long history of type 2 diabetes in my family, and a long list of diabetes symptoms, including retinal swelling (but also year-long eczemas, carpal tunnel syndrome, pancreatitis and thirst). When I heard I could have diabetes, I started eating VERY few carbohydrates, and did so for 4-5 days before being tested for Fasting Blood Sugar. The test came out "perfectly normal", i.e., I imagine, under 100 mg/dL. I am wondering whether it could be a false negative due to my severe diet in the preceding days. Has anyone heard about such cases? Many thanks for your answers: I am really worried about my eyes. more

Resolved Question: What type of dog food should I buy for a healthy and active Husky and an old Dachshund with Pancreatitis?

I can just see it now. My dachshund sneaking over to eat the Husky's dog food at meal time because he's such a finicky eater. The vet recommended that I boil chicken for the dachshund and serve it with rice. This seems just a little bit expensive especially now that my husband is laid off and we're getting food stamps at the moment. Even if I had the money, I don't think I could prepare them a meal all the time. Before I fed my dogs just total garbage dry dog food, you know, the most generic stuff at the market? Plus, I left it down all day, everyday. Now I've learned my lesson. I was looking at that Nature's Balance Fish and Sweet potato food and wonder if that will have enough calories for my Husky? I do want her to live as long as possible too, so I don't mind getting her on a healthier diet. Vet says Low fat for Dachshund, would Nature's Balance be low fat enough? Any suggestions? more

Voting Question: what percentage of fat is a low-fat diet for dogs?

my 5 year old dalmation has pancreatitis. Vet recommends that she stay on a "low-fat" diet. Of course he wants to put her on one that he sells. There are alot of foods out there that call themselves low-fat. What percentage of fat should it be and what other ingredients would be helpful? more

Resolved Question: Looking for a low fat dog food for my dog that I can afford.?

My dog just got over a very scary moment that the vet said was due to pancreatitis. He needs to be on a low fat diet to prevent this from happening again. The food that the vets office recommends is just out of my budget. From everything that I read a dog with pancreatitis should be on a dog food with 9% fat or less. Anyone know of a good choice that is affordable? more

Resolved Question: Honeymoon phase of diabetes?

I have been a type 2 diabetic for about 10 years following a serious bout of pancreatitis. At first my blood sugars were bad, some fasting values of over 400, but as it wore on I got a little better and just needed to control it with diet and exercise. Whenever I got pregnant I would have to go on insulin, after the births my levels would get better. Now I'm pregnant again, at the beginning of my pregnancy I went on insulin and oddly had to stop, 2 hours after a meal my levels would drop to 40. Now I act like I'm not a diabetic anymore, which is very strange for me now that I'm nearing the 7th month. By now I'm usually on a pretty large dose of 2 different insulins, but I don't need anything now. My endocrinologist said he thinks my pancreas is working overtime for some reason, we'll have more testing when I go back. He said most people recover from post pancreatitis diabetes within a few months, but I've hung onto this for 10 years. Has anyone experienced anything like this and what happened? My fasting levels now are usually 78-90 and 2 hours after a meal its about 90-100. If I am in the honeymoon phase, how long will this last since I'm older (31) doesn't it last longer? He does an A1C every visit. It's excellent most times. more

Resolved Question: I just got Acute Pancreatitis....Im only 21!!?

This is a bit long but bear with me if you answer....Thanks.... So I am 21 going into my senior year of college....before I start let me say that I have a 3.9 GPA at a very good school and plan on getting a dual law and business degree when I graduate.... But, like any college student I like to drink on the weekends......and honestly when compared to some other ppl I dont drink that much.......my roommate drinks HEAVILY about 3-4 times a week. I rarely drink more than once a week.....sometimes even once every 2 weeks........but I tend to binge.....and get pretty damn smashed.....but its all in good fun...... and suddenly last weekend I got acute pancreatitis......doctor said it was somewhat serious.......but I wasnt hospitialized or anything...just have to be on this strict diet for a while......oh and like an enzyme's level in my liver was really screwed up..... Now the doctor says I shouldnt drink ever again????!!!!! WTF!!! I just turned 21 for ****'s sake!!!! He's not serious is he?? LIKE NEVER???!!! What about my SENIOR YEAR OF COLLEGE!!!!??? So really when can I start to drink again.....maybe after the summer?? IM ONLY 21!!! Im only starting to "live my life"!!! Im REALLY upset......almost depressed at the thought of never being able to drink again.......or at least for several years.......your 20s should be the time you should be out there enjoying your life!!! What do you guys think.....just wanted to write about it........I really dont think something like this should have happened to me.....I just dont feel like I drink enough to have gotten a health problem with it.......I mean my roommate drinks 10 times more than me and he's in perfect health!!! There a million examples like him in my college....well I was hospitalized for I think a day in a way.....I went to the ER in the evening and they advised me to stay the night so I did....left late the next morning more

Resolved Question: Which food is best for these dogs? Looking to do rotational diet?

A minature Poodle and a Terrier mix. Minature poodle does have some food allergies such as corn, he can't tolerate corn. Some other minor things. Anyways they currently eat California Naturals Herring and Sweet Potato. (My Terrier eats it but she hates it, she prefers the chicken....My poodle won't touch the chicken. So we get the herring) My dog (poodle) did suffer from Acute Pancreatitis about a year ago. Anyways we are very happy with California Naturals but I read it good to sometimes rotate? So I was wondering what foods would be best to rotate with considering my poodles past issues. I'm looking for two other types of food to rotate with.....What do you suggest? Can barely afford the food they have. Thank goodness 25 dollars a month feeds them. 1 bag lasts my 2 dogs a month So feeding them two different foods is not an optionWith the new baby and all we are just on a tight budget right now....so they both have to eat the same food. I was told by a vet as well that rotational diet is best for a dog. But he could be wrong. I like them on CN Herring and Sweet Potato. I feel its the best food for them. They have shiny coats, they are healthy, Firm stools more

Resolved Question: Good weight management/loss food for dogs?

Hi, I am trying to find a good quality weight management/loss food for my American Eskimo who needs to lose weight. So far, he has been good on Nutro Ultra Weight management, which has a 3 star rating at dogfoodanalysis.com Now I am a bit scared to feed my dog a high-protein food, since my in-law's dog of the same breed cannot eat lots of protein due to pancreatitis (especially pork/beef) and our vet warned our dog may or may not have had a mild case of it since Buddy sometimes gets sick if he eats too much meat, especially pork. My parents Eskie seemed to have had a similar problem. So I'd like to avoid the high-protein formulas if possible while still feeding a good quality food. We do feed part of his diet as a homecooked meal designed for my mother-in-law's Eskie but the vet says is a good thing for our dog too, which consists of rice, ground beef, and veggies (peas and carrots and beans usually). Buddy is doing good on the new food and he likes it, just worried about its low protein content (but he does get the meat in his "supper"). We do still feed treats but significantly cut back the number to at max 3 treats a day (small ones, like small milkbones or these tiny teddy dog cookies) or 1 big one (like a dentabone, maybe once a week if even that). Buddy has to lose about 4 -5 lbs at least and so far his weight has maybe only gone down slowly about 1 lbs in the last month or two since we started feeding this food, feeding less treats, and exercising more. He's due to go to the vet for a check-up in September. If he doesn't lose weight by then, I might consider blood tests to see if there is anything else that may cause him not to lose weight. The amount of exercise he gets makes him tired (usually about 30 min-an hr of walking a day, plus exercise in the form of playing with us or my future-in-law's dogs at their house, where he runs around like crazy!) Any other ideas for weight loss?He is a miniature American Eskimo (about 13.5" tall, but hard to measure since he has a really thick double coat). His current weight is about 23 lbs, so he is over the weight for his size (10 - 20 lbs for miniatures), has some fat (but not tons). His parents (a toy Eskie - 12" tall and a miniature 12" tall) were 20 lbs. My dog is a lot bigger than a Pom, so telling me what to feed a Pom is incorrect. We already had reduced his food intake and it didn't help much. We reduced treats significantly. We go some days now with no treats and no supper and he doesn't eat much kibble. Even if free-fed kibble, his bowl (holds 1 1/2 cups of kibble) needs refilling at most twice a week and usually only once a week. His allottment of food, 1 1/2 cups of this food a day. He gets 3 tablespoons max of his supper which vet said was good and healthy, not fattening. I can't control food at my future-in-law's but she started to put the feed-fed food (kibble, milkbones) up when he's there. He has felt like he has lost weight, but our measurements on our home scale don't seem to reflect much weight loss. His body definitely feels less fat now, but his coat is so thick it can be hard to feel his body through it and it makes him look bigger than he is since it stands off the body so much. When he is bathed he looks significantly skinnier. more

Resolved Question: Dog with Pancreatitis and Oxalate Crystals, what to feed?

My 6 year old Cavalier King Charles has been fighting crystals for almost 2 years. He had bladder surgery 7 months ago where a large oxalate crystal was removed. At that time they switched him to Prescription Diet U/D food (no treats). His urinalysis has been better, however he became extremely lethargic with daily diarrhea and pain in his groin/stomach/back. Now he's been diagnosed with pancreatitis. We are making him homemade food of turkey, rice, and peas for now, to lower the fat content and help the pancreatitis, but we aren't sure what that will do for the crystals. Any ideas? The vet seems perplexed as well. We agreed to switch to a low fat diet and retest soon, but she expressed concern that we were trading one problem for another. My guess is that she's researching options too, she said that she hasn't seen these two problems together before. more

Resolved Question: Anyone have experience with a cat with pancreatitis?

I tried to ask this question a few hours ago, but got nothing but stupid and irrelevant answers, so I'm trying again. Maybe the time of the day I asked was when all the intelligent people weren't on their computers. So, here goes one more try: My three-year old kitty, Cookie, has been very healthy all her life and I've always fed her high-quality food. She's never been sick even once. However, she very suddenly got really sick a few days ago and I took her to a 24-hour emergency pet hospital. They kept her for a few days and while she was there, they determined that she had pancreatitis. They treated her for it and she got much better, to my relief. When I picked her up yesterday, the doctor talked to me and told me that she'll have to be on a special prescription-only diet for the rest of her life. I've done some research on the internet, though, and some of what I've read has led me to believe that with an acute case of pancreatitis, a special diet is required only for a couple of weeks. I want to do what's best for her, but I'm just not sure if that prescription diet is really necessary for the rest of her life, and since it's pretty expensive, I don't want to spend the extra money unless I have to -- of course I will if it means that she really does need it. I just wonder if anyone here has had experience with this and can offer some insight. more

Resolved Question: Raw Diet....bad for my dog? How do when know if he can use it.?

My dog suffered from what was believed to be acute pancreatitis. And he has never had a great immune system. He has been doing wonderful on California Naturals Herring and Sweet potato......firm poos and no sick vet visits in almost 10 months. (Its made by the same people that make innova) His first two years he was constantly at the vet. They tried putting him on Science Diet crap and then that I/D. Well it has corn in it and he can't handle corn. So I pulled him off of it and did a bunch of research and determined California Naturals was the right choice for him, so I found the only store in the area that sells it. And he has been on California Naturals since last December....and on Herring since March. We have a new vet now and I asked him about Raw Diet and he said since my dog has had such a weak immune system, its getting better. He would not be able to fight off any of the bad bacteria in a raw diet and he could get very sick. I was thinking of having my other dog on a raw diet but since he can't be on it it would get really expensive feeding one on Raw and the Other on Kibble So how would we know if his immune system will ever be good enough for raw? (The old vet wanted me to isolate him inside from the rest of the world because of his immune system. Well I couldn't do that to him, I know there was a risk having him in the outside world, I knew he could get sick but I wanted him to have a full life. Well he has improved tremendously and the new vet said that he would never have improved this much had I kept him isolated like the old vet suggested) Again: So how would we know if his immune system will ever be good enough for raw?I probably will stick with the California Naturals regardless since we've been advised against raw. I mean its the only food our poodle has ever eaten and been willing to eat without a fuss. He really likes it and so does our terrier. Its more of a curiosity thing really more

Resolved Question: had my gallbladder removed two days ago, will this diarrhea go away?

I am a 30 year old female who eats ate a healthy diet prior to surgery. I had terrible gallstones that were causing pancreatitis, so the doctors opted to remove my gallbladder. I arrived home yesterday and since then I have had diarrhea every time I eat. It isn't necessarily immediate or urgent and isn't like the diarrhea I have had before. It is basically fluid-like. I was on a liquid diet for several days while in the emergency room and in the hospital so this may be a factor. Also, I have never really taken prescription drugs and while in the hospital I was on high doses of antibiotics, pain killers, jello and food I don't normally eat, etc. Is it likely that my digestive system will return to normal soon and that I am just flushing out the junk from the hospital? It seems to occur even if I eat bread and water. Also, I don't have any cramping or discomfort, just gurgling in my stomach and there is almost no odor when I go to the bathroom. I guess that is one bonus! more

Resolved Question: Why do I bloat really badly after I eat?

After I eat, my stomach gets really bloated and I look like I'm pregnant. I don't understand why and I'm also slim so it looks even worse because it doesn't match my body. It usually stays bloated the rest of the day until I wake up in the morning and it's just a little pouch (which looks fine). i think it was about 3 years ago, I got food poisoning salmonella and I had to stay in the hospital and I got Pancreatitis. I had to be on a strict low fat diet and after it was supposedly gone. Sometimes, I feel pain in my stomach and it gets worse when I eat and I take Zantac to get rid of it. Anyways, do you think it's related? What are the medical reasons for my bloating? Thanks. Voting Question: life story (not really) just some help needed?

right where do i start ive had a rollercoaster ride in health . . ive been having many problems with my health . 5 years ago i was rushed to hospital with pancreatitis over alcohol and have had a long battle with alcohol since but ive got to a stage where i dont drink that much prob once a month and a limited amount . ive also had problems sleeping i wake up around 7 times a night with what feels like a headache and my eyes stinging . im also very bloated and constipated all the time i used to get constipated for a couple of days after drinking and then get diarroea for a day after that then back to normal till the next night out but now its just constipation with awfull smelling gas . i have been told by my doctor that im depressed which i agreed to a certain extent but ive tried different drugs but ive never seen a huge difference im now on the drug lexapro 20 mg but sometimes i feel better from them but sometimes i feel worse . ive also been giving xanax just a few for any time i get anxios cos sometimes at night i feel so angry for no reason and dont want to talk to anyone when i feel like that and if my girlfriend starts asking me questions i feel like telling her to shut up cos my head just feels awful and i want to fix this cos when im in good form im very easy going and me and my girlfriend are great together but when i feel bad i could sit there for days and sit in silence . i do feel down a lot and i could be in good humour one min and then start feeling anxios the next . another reason why ive cut out drink as much as i can is cos when i drink i just get drunk way too easy for anyones liking. when i was 16 i was spiked with lsd and felt horrible after it but im 27 now could that have caused a problem . to add to all that the last fem months ive been having problems with my back and neck they are really sore and i think these might be leading to pains in the back of my head . i also cant concentrate cos its like mant thoughts are racing through my mind and songs start playing in my head or i could just daydream out of no where .on top of that i went back playing football this season to try get fit and i did but i trained as hard as anyone but my body just didnt feel up to it no matter how hard i trained . and it also didnt help that my legs are so thin and i cant seem to strengthen them up . i also get very lightheaded and sometimes when im walking down the street i feel like i just walked off the edge of the footpath down off the little step but im still walking on the flat it just feels like my foot went down lower than the path . if i stare at an object it looks like its moving rather than just sitting like an statue .i have appointments for my back with the hospital and with a physio any a phycologist but the waiting lists are long and also my girlfreind is 39 weeks pregnant so i want to change asap . i think a lot of people are starting to think im a hypo buts just so frustrating and im always looking for people on the same wave length as me who feel the same pain as me so they understand . .im starting to think this is the best its going to get and try to just accept it as part of my life . my body just feels so drained all the time i cant even clench my fist so ive started doing weights to see if that helps . my diet is ok but its not the healtiest but not the worst i do eat chips fish burgers pasta salad chocolate and a range of other stuff . . i used to drink prune juice for the constpation and it worked great but now when i could drink a full bottle of prune juice and it just leaves me with very bad wind . im also starting to try ibs tablets . . .any how ive rambled on for long enought i would really appreciate it if any one could read my problems and give me some advice on at least one of the issues .. thanks so muchthanks for your answer im sure ill do something along those lines but i would love some more pointers if anyone can contribute thanks more

Resolved Question: Gall stone in bile duct?

Hi - a rather technical medical question, don't know if anyone can help me. Last week I had gallbladder surgery. Before the surgery I had some stones get stuck in my bile duct which was very painful - I was rushed to hospital by ambulance and given morphine, and had to have them removed with an endoscopy procedure. I then regrettably got pancreatitis as a result of the procedure and spent another 2 weeks in hospital recovering from that before having my gallbladder out last Monday. I have been told that I need to have a scan as they suspect there may still be a stone left in my bile duct. Although I have returned to a normal diet, I am scared I will be in pain if there is still a stone (not to mention worried about having pacreatitis again if I need another endoscopy procedure). The hospital don't seem to be sending me an urgent appointment for the scan - I am still waiting for the date. Question: is there a chance, if I do have a stone in my bile duct, that I will be in pain again like I was before? I have a very young baby to look after and my partner has already taken 3 weeks off work so I am very worried about going to hospital again. I hope someone can help - thanks more

Resolved Question: Help!! acute pancreatitis?

How long does it take for symptoms of pancreatitis to go away.? I had an attack of acute pancreatitis about 3 weeks ago. I was in the hospital for 4 days. I have taken all my meds. I still have a dull pain in my abdomen and my appetite has not returned to normal. My gallbladder was normal on ultrasound. I am sticking to the diet the dr gave me. I wonder if anyone else has had these same problems and how long it took you to feel "normal" again. Please only answer if you have either personal experience with pancreatitis or you are a medical professional. If you have to google "pancreatitis" please don't answer more

Resolved Question: Hill's Science Diet and pancreatitis connection?

My 4 year old Cockapoo, Chloe, was diagnosed (thru palpating the bladder, no xrays) 2 weeks ago for bladder stones. She was given an antibiotic and Hill's Science Diet S/D canned dog food. After 5 days on the dog food she became lethargic and vomited 7 times in 6 hours. We took her to our vet, where they did 2 xrays and found signs of pancreatitis. The pancreas and small intestines were blurred on the xray and the vet said that was indicative of pancreatitis. We could also see undigested chunks of food throughout her large intestine. They kept her for the next 3 days, until we were informed she had rapidly deterriorated and was now anemic (her body was attacking and destroying her red blood cells). Ultimately, we were convinced that the chance of Chloe surviving was less than 10% and even if she did make it there would be permanent damage to most of her internal organs. Based on that, my husband and I agreed that euthanization would be the best for her. I need to know if this has happened to other families! We are distraught over losing our little girl and want Hill's to be held accountable! I understand that this food did not cause her pancreatits, but had she not been given this food, she would still be with us today. Please contact me if you, or someone you know, has had this happen. My email is thebaglady1312@yahoo.com. Thank you!!Yes, of course blood tests were done! And I'm not blaming anyone for her pancreatitis. But I've heard of other similar stories of this food causing pancreatitis to flare up and cause the dog to get seriously ill or die. Our vet contacted Hill's and she was told to have us contact them directly because they may be willing to cover our medical costs for Chloe. If that isn't an admission of a guilty conscience I don't know what is!! Something needs to be done to prevent this from happening to others! more
