Resolved Question: Out of Fentanyl Patches, Afraid of withdrawal?

Ok so in March, I was hospitalized with pancreatitis. I had an ERCP done but since then I'm still in horrible pain everyday. Beginning of April, My family Dr put me on Fentanyl patches 50mcg/per hour and told me I have chronic Pancreatitis. I went back to the Dr today and she wrote out another script for the patches but now my insurance is not wanting to pay for it.They are saying I'm too young for these. I'm 22. I'm completely out of them! I'm so scared about withdrawal from this. My pain is serious, the patches are the only thing that are helping so I can function everyday. I have morphine and Dilaudid but they don't touch the pain. The insurance also stopped paying for my pancreatic enzyme that I need (2 pills, 3 times a day). What should I do? more

Voting Question: How can I continue to abuse alcohol without doing further damage to my liver?

So I was hospitalized last week with pancreatitis and diabetic ketoacidosis after collapsing at my sister's wedding reception. Anyway, the doctors ran some tests and it turns out that I have elevated liver enzymes and show signs of advanced liver disease. The doctor advised that I quit drinking and even referred me to several addiction treatment facilities. The thing is, not drinking isn't an option. Drinking to excess is a very important part of my lifestyle and my professional image. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there a safer way to drink? Are there any multivitamins or herbal supplements I can take to lessen the damaging effects of alcohol on my liver? Drinking is very important to me and if it comes down to it I'll choose drinking over my own health and well-being. I just hope it doesn't have to come to that. more

Resolved Question: Very rude Dr. I dont know what I should do? Please read :)?

Ok, This is going to be long but I really need some answers. Im so confused at what Im supposed to do. I began seeing a GI doctor in Jan. due to food not digesting, weight loss, and constant vomiting. After a few tests he decided I have Gastroparesis ( basically my stomach is slow at digesting food) He ordered an Upper Endoscope which showed everything was fine. Before the test he was very rude to me. I told him I was in pain and had a history of pancreatitis. He basically yelled at me that he didn't think that I had that and immediately gave me the sedative to knock me out. When I woke up, He had wrote a script for Reglan and sent me home. The next morning I was in so much pain, my husband rushed me to the ER. They did blood work which reviled my liver enzymes were elevated. The CT scan came back normal. After 14 hours in the ER they admitted me. I was put on Dilaudid pain pump. I was in the hospital for 18 days. No tests were ever done. They assumed I was there for the pain medicine. I couldnt get the Drs to listen to me. ( BTW Im 22 years old, and before this, I had NEVER taken anything stronger than a tylenol for pain) They let me lay in the hospital for 18 days without passing a BM, I was so uncomfortable, I was miserable. Finally, I got transferred by ambulance to a different hospital. At the new hospital I had an ERCP procedure done and a stint placed into my pancreas ( They found I had a sphincter of the Oddi dysfunction). They put me on pancreas enzyme pills along with a list of other medicines. I started feeling great. Now this past week, the pain has returned. Its been 2 months since my ERCP was done. Im on a durasegic pain patch to help with the pancreatitis but its just not helping the pain. My husband took me to the ER, the Dr gave me dilaudid script and told me to return if it didnt control the pain. So on Sunday I returned to the ER. ( Also I havent been able to keep ANYTHING down, becoming very dehydrated and weak. Ive lost 35 pounds in 2 months) After 10 hours in the ER My GI Dr wouldnt admit me, he wanted to talk to me 1st. Basically he said " I dont know what to do with you, you cant sit in the hospital for weeks on pain medicine. We arent finding anything wrong. If you want to lay around all the time why dont we just put you into a nursing home" He then sent me home to suffer. Now heres the problem. This GI Dr is wanting to see me in 2 weeks. I really dont want to see him again. He didnt listen to me at my appointment in the 1st place. He made it seem like Ive been in chronic pain for 8 years which is not the case. I have had GERD for 8 years but not in pain. I just dont know what to do. Should I make an appointment and get crappy with him THEN switch Drs? Or should I just go and keep my mouth shut. more

Resolved Question: Does my sister have diabetes?

My sister, who is 26, went to the ER where she lives with severe stomach pains. They ran some blood tests that showed that her blood sugar was 407. They told her she was diabetic. My sister never had any symptoms of diabetes like my dad did before he found out he was diabetic. She never drank a lot of liquid or went to the bathroom a lot. Also the first tests showed she had pancreatitis. Then later tests showed up negative for that. Then the tests showed that her liver enzymes were extremely high. I also would like to know if it is normal for an ER to send someone home right away after they give an insulin shot with that high of blood sugar, and to tell her to wait till today to go see a doctor, she went in on Wednesday. The hospital doesn't sound like they know what they are doing, and my parents and I are extremely worried about her. more

Resolved Question: I just found out from emergency room visit - Pancreatitis?

I've been separated for over a year from husband, he was recently laid off lost insurance coverage. I have outstanding bill with doctor so he refuses to see me, the emergency room runs the same tests and says go see your doctor- So, what I am asking; Does anyone know of Care Treatment facilities that may treat me? I want to go to work! I think I've been given a death sentence with no hope. I've also been dating a guy (I've had a crush on for 28yrs-Iwas15 the first time I saw his beautiful green eyes-and perfectly chiseled face-but never told anyone until this past November when we crossed paths again-as we have thru the yrs-and he turned around to give me a very warm firm hug and invited me to dinner with his friends-he doesn't want to believe I am...ill and his people are telling him to drop me because there is "something" wrong with her. I feel like he should too-I have nothing to offer him but pain and misery and loss eventually death in my heart I believe he loves me and would do anything he could to help IF there IS any help out there) I have three children 22,11,8-&5yr old granddaughter, that I have been in so much pain and NO energy But my mind says GO!!! so much to say and so many questions-I have looked up pancrepancreatic I've seen some surgical precedures and have heard one doctor say if they get to it too late the surguries will not prolong life expectancy-only removal of the painful dead cells that block the ducts that secrete the enzymes, but with no car, job, money, insurance All I have is God. and I've been a terrible Christian, making promises with all good intent and falling short every time one thing or another I do not deserve a miraculous healing from God but I do need One (or about a million little miracles) to pull something together so my son can have a chance at life-he is mamas' "BOY" he loves his mom and wants to go with me when I go-He can play piano, drums, guitar and praises God-Loves Jesus but the friends he has do not go to church my estranged husband refused to pray with me or surrender his lustful greed (I"LL just stop there) he was not a positive influence for either of us, I have regrets I got away last year-because I wanted to take one more chance at having a good life and pursue happiness less hatred around me more happy -doesn't look like that is going to happen. How can I find out if anyone has an insurance policy on me? I am curious as to how from sept to now I am in so much pain-agony words cannot describe-I am sorry I am not practiced at the art of short n sweet and keep emotion out of it-I have no clue where to turn, the hospital told me to see my doctor, the doctor wants his money (I don't blame him I just need to get to work so I can pay him more

Voting Question: Whats wrong with my Dog? Help.?

I have a 4 year old Maltese. He used to ALWAYS be happy, running around, jumping, and everything. Since the past 3 weeks, he just lost all of that. He lays around, when we come home he use to get so happy and jump around, now he just barks and gets happy, but it only lasts for 5 minutes, he walks into corners and stands, he finds awkward places to go, he will just lay down and keep his eyes open and just stares. He does just the strangest things. We've taken him to several different vets because nothing is helping. They've said he had pancreatitis, then another vet ruled that out, then said he might have liver caner. He also has a dislocated in his neck. He also has extremely high liver enzymes. He is on milk thistle and vitamin E, which is what the doctors have told us. They also give him cortisone shots. Nothing is helping him. What else can it be? more

Resolved Question: How long to heal Leaky Gut Syndrome?

I had pancreatitis about 18 months ago. Since then the vitamins and supplements that I have always taken no longer work and give me energy. I am currently low in my Vitamin D per tests. Other than Vit. D, I am taking Zinc Carnosine, Biotin, Probiotics and Pancreatic Enzymes for Leaky Gut Syndrome. If I have Leaky Gut, how long will it take to heal? Thanks. Tim more

Resolved Question: What is wrong with my dog?

My dog has been ill since last Wednesday, 3/10/10. I took him to the vet on Saturday. At that time he was very weak, wouldn't walk much, seemed very dizzy/disoriented and not eating. The vet ran blood work, urine analysis, and xrays - all were clean except one high pancreas enzyme. The vet put him on an injectible antibiotic that is supposed to last two weeks and stated he thinks the dog has pancreatitis. He seemed to feel slightly better, is now eating and moving around a little bit more but is not progressively getting better since Sunday. He is currently showing the following symptoms: weakness, dizziness/incoordination, runny nose, he looks like he is losing weight but is eating, he is breathing strange- almost like he has a stuffy nose-breathing really hard but through his nose but no panting, off and on he is getting really drooly, and is urinating in the house which is not normal for him. He still will not go up/down the stairs and if he tries loses balance, and bumping into walls when walking. When he is just standing still he is leaning on his back legs and seems like he is trying to stable himself from being dizzy or something. I also noticed a white spot in the middle of his left eye- possibly a cataract forming? It wasn't there a week ago. My dog is 6 1/2 yrs old, Boxer, Male, not neutered. Any ideas on what this could be, or any test I should ask my vet to run? Thanks for the help!Vet has him on Purina EN - its is prescription canned food. more

Resolved Question: chronic pancreatitis prognosis?

So, I have chronic pancreatitis. I'm not a drinker (I got it from gallstones) and I haven't touched a drink since I got sick, but I am still having problems. So I have to take enzymes to eat and I am insulin dependant (I wasn't a diabetic before the pancreatitis) The doctors tried to put a stent in my pancreatic duct (5 or 6 times) but it didn't work and the latest MRI shows the duct is more dilated than before, and my psuedocyst is larger, and more "diffuse" I asked My gastroenterologist what that means and he didn't know. So anyway I have seen local docs, a specialist and a surgeon the last time I saw the surgeon he said there was nothing he could do right now, and they wouldn't do surgery unless I was in terrible pain (I have some pain but nothing to get all cut up about) When the specialist saw my last MRI he SUGGESTED I see the Surgeon again, but he's just going to say the same thing he said last time, since my pain is bearable. And my insurance company doesn't want me to see that surgeon. Actually that guy was kinda a jerk anyway, so I don't care about that so much, but the specialist's office was supposed to be finding a surgeon in-network for me, but I haven't heard back. Anyway, obviously I have to research this illness on the web, because these doctors are all crazy and tell me something different every time I see them. I realize the people on YAHOO aren't a bunch of MD's but I was hoping maybe someone else that HAS Pancreatitis or knows about this kind of stuff can steer me in the direction of GOOD info on the web. PLEASE? more

Voting Question: Pepcid to cat slight heart murmur?

Hello Usually I would call my vet for something like this, but seeing it's Family day, the vet is not in today and I would like some feedback... So long story short, my cat (11 years old, indoors only) has been through a lot recently, such as chronic pancreatitis. She's slowly getting better, but she still isn't her usual self yet. She has days when she seems somewhat fine, but also days like today when she seems depressed, nauseous, and not eating. The vet says her pancreas is still inflamed and that she has a pseudo-cyst on it that may be aggravating her symptoms. We're giving her metoclopramide (injection), codeine (a gel we put on her ear) every day, and some digestive enzymes (powder) whenever we can. But even though we're giving her metoclopramide for the nausea and vomiting, she still continues to vomit. It's usually bile, or clear saliva-like vomit, or frothy white stuff, rarely any food. Before it used to be once a day, but the past day it's been more often (4~6 times a day). When we brought this up before, the vet didn't seem overly concerned, as long as her temperature is normal (which it has been). SO I haven't tried Pepcid AC yet for the vomiting, and would like to try it (seeing that the metoclopramide doesn't seem to be doing much at all). I know it's 1/4 tablet, 10 mg once/twice a day for a cat.... The only problem is that my cat has a low-grade heart murmur. I read on some sites that Pepcid may be bad to give if the cat/person has a heart rhythm problem. If anyone has any information, or have given Pepcid to a cat who has a heart murmur with success, I would be grateful! Thanks for your time. more

Voting Question: Anyone suffer from pancreatitis?

I'm just wondering if your enzymes are 17,000 (should be under 100) shouldn't you be in the hospital? I have a friend who says she did outpatient labs & that is how high her enzymes were. Can't you die from pancreatitis? When my levels were 7,000 there was no way I could deal with the acute attack at home. I could barely walk or talk let alone drive myself to the hospital/doctors office. My doctors didn't really give me a choice but to go the hospital so it seems strange to me that they sent her home. Any thoughts??? more

Resolved Question: Question about pancreatitis.?

Hello. First off, I was diagnosed with pancreatitis. When I was admitted to the hospital my lipase were at 26000 [normal is up to 393] and my amylase were 1740 [normal is up to 115]. I was in the hospital on Potassium for a week. I am not allowed to eat or drink until my enzymes go down. But since I've been allowed to come home on in-home health, I have researched and found that Aloe Vera Juice has been found to be very helpful when it comes to digestive enzymes. If I'm not supposed to be eating or drinking until they come up, should I even try this approach? Any advice and other options are much appreciated. Thank you so much to any one with information. more

Resolved Question: Slightly elevated pancreatic enzymes?

I got blood tests about a week ago and the tests came back with my lipase and amylase 3 points above the normal cutoff. I've been having some stomach pains that wake me up at night sometimes but it doesn't seem to be anything overly serious. The doctor said pancreatitis but after all the hoops he's made me go through I'm not so sure I believe him anymore. Shouldn't I be in the hospital if it's pancreatitis? Could it be stress causing this? It seems like I feel much less pain when I meditate before bed. I am not going to lie. I'm worried about pancreatic cancer, but I am only 22 years old and it seems unlikely. The doctor said pancreatitis is the only reason my enzymes are slightly raised like this. I was hoping to get someone's opinion on this, as I have been through the ringer. He hasn't done any real diagnostic testing on me at all. Just the blood test. First he said it was gastritis, then he said it was an ulcer, but I tested negative for H.Pylori and I'm pissed because I'm tired of seeing my stupid doctor. I've been there six times in the last two months. By the way the normal cutoff of "high" for these enzymes is 160, and I was at 163.LOL Diabetes. That is ridiculous. My grandmother had diabetes. That is NOT what this is. I was wondering about gallstones. I just don't get how it could be pancreatitis. I wasn't sent to the hospital and my pain was never so bad I felt like I needed to go to the hospital. I never developed a fever, and my pulse never soared above normal. I am soooo confuuuuused....That and it's been going on for several weeks. The pain seems to have gone away for the time being, but I would wake up at night with either pain that felt like I'd been punched in the gut (Not too horrible, however) or with reflux. Both prevented me from sleeping, but I just...I don't get it. If it comes back, I will be going back to the doctor. I know it isn't from alcohol because I've only ever drank lightly (1-3 beers a week). I also HAD a beer in the midst of all this mess and it neither added to nor caused any problems. The more I meditate and the less stress I'm under the less I hurt. Thank you for your answers. more

Resolved Question: My cat is very sick. What else can I do?

My cat Grae (who is my baby) is about 14 years old. Until about 5months ago he acted like a young cat. He had a surgery to remove bladder stones and has been sick ever since. He first had pancreatitis, that was awful. This became a little better and it is stabilized with pancreatic enzyme pills daily. He has had hyperthyroid for years and it was fine, now it keeps getting worse and his tapazole dosage is much higher. He now has kidney stones, irritable bowel syndrome and feline hepatitis. He is super skinny, urinates all of the time and is super hungry. The vet says that there is not much we can do but try to make him comfortable. He is on a high dosage of Prednisone, Tapazole, Raglen (for vomiting) and pancreatic enzymes. Has anyone else experienced this? What else could I do for him? He was tested for lymphoma and was negative. Bladder cancer was not ruled out by biopsy yet, but vet doesn't think I should get that tested. Thanks to everyone that responded. I am taking Grae back to his old vet to have him give me his insight into Graes problems. Grae has large amounts of blood in his urine. The new vet says that it is because of his kidney stone. His thyroid was just tested and it was up to 8, so I just upped his thyroid medicine a little. The vet says we can't go any higher than this w/ out hurting him. He has a lot of stomache rumbling and the prednisone seemed to really pep him up at first. He was almost back to normal. The effects are minimal now and he projectile vomits all over if I don't give him one raglen a day. He still loves food though and takes all of the pillow at night purring at the top of his lungs.Oh, and he is on special food and takes pancreatic enzymes. more

Resolved Question: what KIND of diabetes?

I know this is a question for my endocrinologist, but I'm not due to see him for a little bit, and I am just curious. I was diagnosed with diabetes over a year ago, but no one ever told me if it was type 1 or 2 or anything. I WAS told at one point BEFORE I developed diabetes that I was prediabetic and in danger of developing Type 2, because I have PCOS. But, that's not how I got diabetes! I had a very bad case of Pancreatitis that did damage to my pancreas. As a result, I have chronic pancreatitis, and I have to take pancreatic enzymes (creon) and insulin (lantis) and my sugar is not all that well controlled. I already have neuropathy and vision changes. I suspect that clinically speaking I have both types 1 &2?!? I read this is possible and sometimes referred to as "double diabetes" but i cannot find too much on the subject. Again, I am going to ask my doctor, but in the mean time I was hoping someone who is knowledgeable about this subject could explain it to me? Thank you.to the first poster, thank you, but I think you misunderstood, I AM on insulin every day. more

Resolved Question: What can I have? Is it Pancreatitis?

I have had a pain on my left side for about 30 years. It can be a sharp stabbing or dull aching. Their is a full feeling and tenderness on that left side. I Have had light color bad smelling stools also. They will float if I drink, alcohol. I had an ultrasound done on my gall bladder, liver, and panceas. All reports appear to be normal, but I was not instructed to fast that morning, and the results are limited. The doctor, wont do the test over again. I have had Lipase and Amalayse enzymes blood tests, and results are normal. I have had an increase in liver enzymes in the past, along with increase in tryglicerides. I have stopped drinking for several years. If I begin drinking, my stools will loose color again, and will float again.floating means steatorreah Could I really have pancreatitis issues??? Could these tests be normal, because I stopped drinking??? Should my ultrasound be done over again??? Please someone help me, if u have any ideas. Thanks Martz Doctor says no. but doesnt know what it is. more

Resolved Question: Raw feeders-what do you say to this?

I said dogs are just like wolves inside, and he said this: If they are still wolves, why do we have breeds that have food allergies, breed related pancreatitis, pancreatic enzyme insufficiencies just to name a few changes in the gut. Many smaller breeds with normal teeth size and placement still have the same problems as the breeds with smushed in faces. There is a change in the saliva that is responsible for that, some owners feed the same hard foods as bigger dogs and still get teeth problems. You can't change just the outside, everything is connected. Dogs have not been wolves for thousands of years, despite being able to breed with them. more

Resolved Question: I just got Acute Pancreatitis....Im only 21!!?

This is a bit long but bear with me if you answer....Thanks.... So I am 21 going into my senior year of college....before I start let me say that I have a 3.9 GPA at a very good school and plan on getting a dual law and business degree when I graduate.... I rarely drink more than once a week.....sometimes even once every 2 weeks........but I tend to binge.....and get pretty damn smashed.....but its all in good fun...... and suddenly last weekend I got acute pancreatitis......doctor said it was somewhat serious.......but I wasnt hospitialized or anything...just have to be on this strict diet for a while......oh and like an enzyme's level in my liver was really screwed up..... Now the doctor says I shouldnt drink ever again????!!!!! WTF!!! I just turned 21 for ****'s sake!!!! He's not serious is he?? LIKE NEVER???!!! What about my SENIOR YEAR OF COLLEGE!!!!??? So really when can I start to drink again.....maybe after the summer?? IM ONLY 21!!! Im only starting to "live my life"!!! What do you guys think.....just wanted to write about it........I really dont think something like this should have happened to me.....I just dont feel like I drink enough to have gotten a health problem with it.......I mean my roommate drinks 10 times more than me and he's in perfect health!!! There a million examples like him in my college....well I was hospitalized for I think a day in a way.....I went to the ER in the evening and they advised me to stay the night so I did....left late the next morning more

Voting Question: Is this a law suite? I was taken to a hospital with severe abdominal stomach pain. Told it was muscles .?

I had started a new drug and had pain. The first trip to the er with 3 cat scans. and blood work. The intern told me there is nothing wrong with me and it was muscles. I could here the staff laughing and he was talking about me out of shape ect. I was upset I was vomiting couldnt eat for almost 2 weeks. My pcp told me I had pancreatitis. That night The pain was so severe that I couldnt stand up. The same intern laughed when he saw me threw up his arm saining I dont know...The resident dr came in and backed up the interns diagnosis. I got angry I was billed 75,000.00 for the visits. It turned out to be a gall bldder stone the size of a golfball. sitting right on the port. After surgery I felt great. I was told all that was checked and nothing. It was in my mind and it is muscles because I was out of shape.I was dehydrated because of vomiting for days. I could not stand up straight because of the pain I heard every word that was said about me at the nurses station and to the intern I was a joke.So total 4 or 5 cat scans, blood work that showed increased pancreatic enzymes higher the second visit. My diagnosis was a shrug of the shoulders. This is a well known teaching hospital. My pcp called me had me admitted and emergency surgery. more

Resolved Question: My cat has fatty liver disease and he was very sick, i just want to help people with their questions about it?

Hi, my cats name is fatso. He was 4 years and 8 months old. Fatso was a black cat with a very nice face and had long very beautiful hair. He was a very playful and kind cat to be around. He loved to joke around and rub his head against anyone who came close to him. Fatso was always purring and wouldn't hurt a fly because he was way too nice. He would always meow as loud as he could just so he would make sure that you knew he was there. Fatso had recently become very ill on Friday May 29, 2009. We noticed that Fatso had stopped eating quite a bit and has lost some weight even though Fatso, who was normally known for his name, loved to eat. Even though he stopped eating we noticed that his stomach was still getting bigger. He had also become very lethargic and stopped his purring. Fatso wasn't being himself. He seemed to be very thirsty on this Friday during the day, but he wouldn't drink anything because his mouth seemed to be hurting him. We tried to get him some water by squirting from through a syringe (without the needle of course) into his mouth. On that Friday night, fatso had started to throw up this white puffy gloop and it looked very painful for him. He kept trying to stick his tongue out like there was something caught in his throat. Fatso wasn't doing so well so we brought him to the vet on Saturday morning at 7 am. He stayed there in critical condition for 3 days. The vet did a blood sample test, and noticed that his liver enzymes were quite high. Fatso was put on IV and was taken care of for these 3 days. On the second day when we went to see Fatso he seemed to be looking a lot better. Then on Monday, the 3rd day or yesterday, we had a call from the vet saying that Fatso wasn't doing so well and that he would have to be transferred from the vet’s office to an actual animal hospital. So we made a decision and picked up Fatso from the vet and brought him to the animal hospital. When we picked him up the doctor seemed to be right because he seemed to have gone back to the way he was when we first brought him in. At this time Fatso's skin that was exposed above his eyes seemed to be turning yellow and this was because of the enzyme build-up in his liver. This caused his blood to change color which caused the skin to change color. I let him out of his carrying cage while we where waiting in the lobby of this animal hospital (In Guelph Ontario, this place is probably the best place in the world for sick animals and is called Guelph Animal Hospital) and I let him out of his cage. He sat with me for a little while but he wanted to walk around, so I let him. Fatso could barely stand up and fell to the floor twice. We put him up on the bench and he started to fall asleep. Since that time Fatso has had multiple tests and has been diagnosed with fatty liver disease, pancreatitis, and fluid build-up in his stomach (which is the reason why his stomach was getting bigger even though he wasn't eating). After this call we decided that we did not want him to be poked and probed anymore because that is not the way a cat should live. Cats should be able to do everything they are supposed to do not sitting around eating food through a tube in his stomach. So we are going to go and see Fatso today but he is going to be put to sleep. The reason why I am writing this story is so that people who are in need of help and need answers quickly will be able to read Fatso's story and help there Kitten(s) or Cat(s). We will miss you always. For Fatso, it is what he would want me to do more

Resolved Question: Question on diagnostics of pancreatitis? Knowledgable please?

This morning my dog ate a huge glob of grass; then vomited it up. The stomach bile was pink in color; so I took her to the vet fearing an obstruction or something. After bloodwork and an xray (which only showed she had a gassy tummy); the vet told me she thinks my dog has pancreatitis. The bloodwork was normal except one of her enzyme levels was a bit higher than it should be. She said to fast her for today then feed her a bland diet for the next couple days and she should be doing fine. She also gave us anti nausea meds and antacids meds...I think Tagament? After reading up on the illness; I'm wondering if the diagnosis is correct or if I should have a second opinion. From what I've read the enzyme levels are not a good detection of pancreatitis and it seems that this is either an extremely mild case or just a simple stomach upset. They gave my dog an injection of anti nausea meds before we left, but I was supposed to give her a pill this evening. She seems perfectly fine and normal; she has no anorexia which is one of the most common symptoms...she's been begging and whining for food all day. What are your thoughts? Oh btw...while at the vets office and racking my brain for everything I feed my dog I remembered I had strawberries last night for desert and shared with the dogs. That was likely the cause of the bile being pink rather than blood. She's an American Bulldog and is almost 4 years old. I don't plan to feed her tonight...she can deal with a day of no food. The next two days she'll get boiled chicken breast, rice and cottage cheese. She only threw up the grass one time this morning at 10:30am...it's been 10 hours and she's been fine. Playing with our other dog all day, etc.Shelter puppies...we never did start raw feeding. The dogs are still on Canidae. Lacie seems fine, and hasn't appeared sick at all since she threw up the grass Sat morning, so I don't know what to make of the diagnosis or her situation. Hopefully it's just not very serious and we can control this issue with proper diet (ie: keeping her away from the cat food) :) more

Resolved Question: Acute Pancreatitis ... Could be wrong diagnosis?

7 months ago I had pretty bad pain, not horrible, could still walk and drive. I thought it was heartburn, went to pharm and got pepcid. It didn't go away in the hour as said by the pharm. The pain wasn't severe, just bad enough to call the dr. to ask how long it takes pepcid to work. Two hours later went to Dr. She felt around, I had bowel signs (which I've read I wouldn't have it if AP), normal blood pressure. She ran a blood test and everything came back normal except amalyse and lipase were quite high. Within 2 days I was feeling normal, but she continued to take blood tests 1 per week, and enzymes were quickly going back to normal. Took 3 weeks to normalize. Again, all blood tests were normal in others except white blood cell count was high (14). With everything I read, except for the enzymes, this doesn't sound like your typical AP. I eat normal foods, some fatty, and drink occasionally. I haven't had contact with the dr. since. She said don't drink, but when I called her after a week or so she said I could resume normal activities. I just assumed that meant all normal, so I continued drinking in moderation. Again, no problems. Any advise? Does the levels represent a certainty of pancreatitis? No other tests were performed. No 'radiating' pain, didn't go to hospital, ate soup and jello for 4 or 5 days, and didn't drink alcohol for a few weeks. Resumed normal feed, and drink wine, but never more than 1-2 on occasion. Could this be a misdiagnosis? I have had no more symptoms whatsoever since then more

Resolved Question: Just some help, what NOT to feed your dog.?

s to avoid Reasons to avoid Alcoholic beverages Can cause intoxication, coma, and death. Baby food Can contain onion powder, which can be toxic to dogs. (Please see onion below.) Can also result in nutritional deficiencies, if fed in large amounts. Bones from fish, poultry, or other meat sources Can cause obstruction or laceration of the digestive system. Cat food Generally too high in protein and fats. Chocolate, coffee, tea, and other caffeine Contain caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous systems. Citrus oil extracts Can cause vomiting. Fat trimmings Can cause pancreatitis. Grapes and raisins Contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys. There have been no problems associated with grape seed extract. Hops Unknown compound causes panting, increased heart rate, elevated temperature, seizures, and death. Human vitamin supplements containing iron Can damage the lining of the digestive system and be toxic to the other organs including the liver and kidneys. Large amounts of liver Can cause Vitamin A toxicity, which affects muscles and bones. Macadamia nuts Contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscle. Marijuana Can depress the nervous system, cause vomiting, and changes in the heart rate. Milk and other dairy products Some adult dogs and cats do not have sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the lactose in milk. This can result in diarrhea. Lactose-free milk products are available for pets. Moldy or spoiled food, garbage Can contain multiple toxins causing vomiting and diarrhea and can also affect other organs. Mushrooms Can contain toxins, which may affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock, and result in death. Onions and garlic (raw, cooked, or powder) Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia. Cats are more susceptible than dogs. Garlic is less toxic than onions. Persimmons Seeds can cause intestinal obstruction and enteritis. Pits from peaches and plums Can cause obstruction of the digestive tract. Potato, rhubarb, and tomato leaves; potato and tomato stems Contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems. This is more of a problem in livestock. Raw eggs Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain Salmonella. Raw fish Can result in a thiamine (a B vitamin) deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death. More common if raw fish is fed regularly. Salt If eaten in large quantities it may lead to electrolyte imbalances. String Can become trapped in the digestive system; called a "string foreign body." Sugary foods Can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetes mellitus. Table scraps (in large amounts) Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced. They should never be more than 10% of the diet. Fat should be trimmed from meat; bones should not be fed. Tobacco Contains nicotine, which affects the digestive and nervous systems. Can result in rapid heart beat, collapse, coma, and death. Yeast dough Can expand and produce gas in the digestive system, causing pain and possible rupture of the stomach or intestines. more

Resolved Question: Can Creon cause a false positive for acute pancreatitis?

I was prescribed Creon 20 for what my doctor thinks may be chronic pancreatitis. I'm wondering... if I've taken this medicine recently and go to the hospital for an attack, will my bloodwork look as though I'm having acute pancreatitis? Or will the enzyme levels be too high (or low) for them to think that? Or will they be able to tell that it's a medicine and not my own elevated enzyme levels? I've been instructed to take three capsules before each major meal and two capsules before each snack. I'm wondering also... how long after I swallow the capsules will the enzymes be detectable in my blood? I'm just a little worried about some things. Nobody seems to know the answer to these questions, so if you do, please help me out! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Acute pancreatitis, low fat diet?

Why exactly must a patient who has been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis be put on a low fat diet? Is this because of the enzyme lipase? Will a low fat diet "ease the workload" for the pancreas? Please include sources in your answer if you can :) more

Voting Question: what should i do for my dog?

i took my dog(chihuahua) to the vet on monday. she had had a seizure, or i believe it was a seizure sunday night. legs tensing up, and a couple of twitches. it lasted only for a few seconds but still scared me, a lot. its the second time it has happened. ANYWAYS- the vet took some blood samples, some of the enzyme things were elevated so they told us she might have pancreatitis. we had to take her food away for 24 hours. the only thing she is allowed to eat for now is boiled rice. but she doesnt want to eat it. i know she is hungry, but she wont eat the rice. what should i do? we also have to give her an antibiotic for a few days, take her back to the vet and hopefully everything will be better. also, she hasnt been vomiting, she does seem a bit more subdued, but happy, and she has been trying to "hump" things. could this have led to the seizures? more

Resolved Question: I'm thinking of getting a second opinion....What do you think? How exactly is this diagnosed?

How would a vet typically diagnose Pancreatitis? I ask because I'm not so sure that is what is going on or the only thing going on. My dog has been having tummy problems since he was 7 months old. He is now 1 year and 6 months old. I think there is more going on then they think...Ofcourse they ran some bloodwork. The typical blood work they do when a dog is sick. (they tested his liver and he had high enzymes and said everything pointed to pancreatitis) If I understand that correctly. They gave him fluids for dehydration from the vomiting and diahreaha. And gave him antibiotics (both flair ups) and sent him home. The problem is he doesn't seem to be getting better. He continues to lose weight and still has the tummy issues. We've changed his diet so its comepletely low fat and he has never eaten anything but dog kibble (he hasn't had any people food...except now he does eat yogurt to build up his immune system that was destroyed by all the antibiotics) I I think I am going to be taking him to a new vet. This vet treated my other poodle for 14 years. I just want to be sure. You know What do you think?ADD: I wanted to add he is a poodle and he didn't come from the best breeding situation...I am not happy with this vets office when we moved here we went to the vet my dad suggested....unfortunatley they are not too fond of my dad and they are very rude with me.....(and he isn't even my real father)He is just so young and pancreatitis is normally in older dogs after having years of fatty foods. And he just isn't getting better with treatment....I think there is something more going onWhat would you do? I just want to make sure we are doing everything we can for him. (He eats California Naturals Chicken and Rice Lowfat........the only and first food we haven't had to force down his throat......he used to eat Purina) more

Resolved Question: Charlie horses and scalp pain?

I am asking this question for my dear mother. My mom has suffered from pain in her scalp for many years. Her hair no longer creates a root so after it gets so long, it falls out. She is also experiencing extreme charlie horses in her legs every evening. The doctors have put her on potassium, calcium and magnesium. She is drinking at least a half gallon of water a day. She still gets them. We tried stretching the muscles, but that makes it worse. Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong with her? She also suffered from pancreatitis about a year ago. At that time her enzyme reading 218,000. They were suprised she lived. About 15 years ago she was told she had a very high reading of protein in her urine. Anyone know anything that might help or somethign she could be tested for? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Do I have Chronic Pancreatitis?

Im 30 yrs. old and have had acute pancreatitis 5 times in the last 3 years. The doctors have not been able to find a cause, and i'm not a drinker. ( I did alittle, but not much). One attack was cause by an ERCP when i had a stint placed in my pancreatic duct. I have also had my gallbladder removed and still had an attack a few months after that. So far, I've not been diagnosed w/chronic but I've been reading alot. It seems that I could have chronic, but other readings suggest that chronic pain is really persistent and lasts for awhile. All of my acute attacks have only lasted 3-5 days and then recovered completely. I have really been cautious w/my diet since the last attack and am now taking pancreatic enzymes. Just wondering if I may already have chronic. more

Resolved Question: What is the life expectancy of someone with chronic pancreatitis?

I have had pancreatitis 5 times in the last 3 years. I'm 30 years old and Dr.'s can't find the cause. The diagnosis is acute but based on what I have read it could be chronic or could be chronic very soon. I've had a stint placed in my pancreatic duct, my gallbladder removed and it still flares up. I'm now on a strict diet and taking digestive enzymes. Im just wondering if I can expect a normal life span or if I can plan on dying fairly young. Im really scared. more

Resolved Question: severe acute pancreatitis?

Severe acute pancreatitis? my husband has suffered severe acute pancreatitis for the past 2 months. he had no food for 1 month but his lipase and amilase keeps rising from a range lipase of 180 to 349 and amilase of 184 to 320 the docs have just put him on liquid diet. is that normal? is it possible to be getting better even if the enzymes rise? they say his levels are rising maybe because the pancreas is absorbing the liquid around it.can some one help me with the neccessary information? i have no one to give me detailed information. thank you for your help and supporthe is still in hospital and has seen a gastroenterologist. but just that the levels amilase and lipase are rising instead of falling. he has no pain though more

Resolved Question: Dialated pancreatic duct? Fluid in the abdomin? WHAT?

Ok, 8 months ago I had a pretty bad case or pancreatitis. I ended up in the hospital for 2 months, developed 2 pseudo cysts and diabetes. They placed a pancreatic stent (pancreatic duct, not the common bile duct) and then removed it. The pseudocyst were still there. NOW, a week ago I had abdominal pains and horrible heart burn. Went to the ER. The did some blood work.Pancreatic enzymes were alittle elevated, but NOT pancreatitis numbers. White blood cell count is around 14000. Neither one of these findings is a surprise. My doctors been doing monthly blood work since I left the hospital, and this is how my nubers have been running. They did a Catscan...and...My pancratic duct is dilated? wha...? And, I have "free fluid" in my abdomin. Some sort of soft tissue "concern" near my common bile duct. I asked what all this mean..and got an "I dunno" from the ER doc! He told me to go to my gastroenertologist and discharged me. And oh yeah..."remember to come back and pick up the "final" results of the CT, those were only preliminary." They still have to go to AUSTRALIA to be read (I live in the USA) UGH. Soooo... Of course I made an apointment with my doc, but, I don't see him for a week. Anyone have any idea what any of this means? Especially why would my pancreatic duct be dialated?? more

Resolved Question: pancreas enzymes are elevated and don't know why?

so far i've had 4 pancreatitis illnesses in the past year and a half. i don't drink at all or have gallstones. i'm 17. what could be the reasons on why my pancreas enzymes would be so high. when i went in the hospital they did some bloodwork and said my enzymes were 2000 and were soposed to have 200+. my worst one had 3000. what could be the reasons it could be like that. is it food, working out and running too much, or is it like the doctors say an unknown reason. more

Resolved Question: They keep telling me it's not pancreatitis... what is it?

I've had pancreatitis a few times, so I know what it feels like. The past few months, I keep getting a pain that feels exactly like pancreatitis, but the doctors I've seen have told me my pancreatic enzyme levels are normal. They've tried telling me maybe I have gas or something, which is ridiculous. I've had gas, I've had pancreatits, and I can tell the two apart. Sometimes it gets really bad. I feel like I'm going to end up on Mystery Diagnosis or something, like the people you see saying, "They kept telling me I was fine until finally one doctor said 'hey, maybe you have this really rare disease.'" I know it's a long shot, but does anyone have any idea what this might be? more

Voting Question: My vets can't figure out what my cat has, but they are torn between IBD and Lymphoma. I need alternative help.

My cat is 16, we thought she had a host of different diseases from hyperthyroidism (because she was ravenous and then always very hungry and still is) to pancreatitis (because she has constant diarrhea) well I ran several bloodworks including one to see if she had a pancrease enzyme insufficiency.. so far they don't know what she has!!!! They think its lymphoma or IBD. They said if its the "L" then she has only 6 mos. to live, but she started losing weight last year, so is it possible its not?? In the interim, she's still losing weight, very active, getting a little weak, but not too bad, always meowing, she was shaved and her hair won't grow back after 6 months, the vet assume its because of her compromised immune system. She has reoccuring bouts of liquid diarrhea..the constant meowing, wanting my attention like crazy, weight loss. She has responded well to a pancreas enzyme I stir into her food, even tho her tests turned out she creates 2 many enzymes. I need alternative med helIM PLACING THIS IN THIS CATAGORY to get clues as physiology between animals and human are very similar. Please contact me with any advice beyond leaving any here. I can also add details based on the responses I get here. I need to really get help and extend her life, the vets don't know whats wrong with her. They think a biopsy to see if its lymphoma is too much for her to take. They just don't know whats wrong with her. I need to fatten her up and keep her fat, because she can't keep losing weight. more

Resolved Question: Is it alright for a dog that takes pancrezyme, for pancreatitis, take Multi-Enzyme Probiotic Formula pills?

The Multi-Enzyme tablets were bought at the store and the pancrezyme tablets were given to me by the vet. Pancrezyme has Pancreatin, Amylase, Protease, Lipase as it's main ingredients to help the body digest food. All of these are in the Multi-Enzyme that I bought from the store more

Resolved Question: Why did I get pancreatitis? I have no gallbladder and don't drink.?

I am 9 weeks pregnant and I had pancreatitis this week. I stayed in the hospital overnight and was released the next day since my lipase was back to normal. I had my gallbladder removed a few years back and I never drink alcohol. I don't smoke or do drugs or even take a daily prescription. I'm not overweight and I can't figure this out. I'm paranoid about eating any fat at all now. The meal that set it off was tomato soup and a glass of whole milk. Not exactly a greasy burger and fries. I have a little pain after eating most things now. Oh, at the hospital I asked to see my bloodwork and notice I was low on 3 liver enzymes (alk/phos, alt, asg?) and low for kidney as well, (BUN, Crea)not too much, just a little. My cbc was low so I'm anemic as well, but no one told me and I'd probably never know if I hadn't looked for myself. I feel like crap today, have a low fever and I'm worried. I go back to my doctor in the morning and I want to be well informed. So if anyone has any ideas for me, I'd love to hear it. Please and thank you.Oh, I forgot, I was diagnosed with non-specific colitis a few years ago. I'm not having a flare-up though.Actually in most cases your gallbladder has everything to do with your pancreas. The two most common causes of pancreatitis are gallstones and alcoholism. That's why I mentioned it. more

Resolved Question: Pancreatitis at 9 weeks pregnant. Gained 10 lbs overnight?

Yesterday my hubby took me to the ER with horrible pain in upper right abdomen. It was pancreatitis, so they kept me overnight. I wasn't allowed any food or water and was put on an IV for fluids. I also got morphine that I could control when I needed it. I'm 9 weeks pregnant with twins and they seem to be fine, no cramping or bleeding. Today, my bloodwork came back better so they let me go home on a very low fat diet. I asked to see my bloodwork before I left and my liver and kidney enzymes were a little low. Plus I was anemic, but no one told me that! Now that I'm home I noticed that I gained 10 lbs since yesterday. I'm a little freaked by this. I'm going to go to my doctor's in the morning, but I'd love to hear any insight to this. My fat intake has recently increased a little as I switched to whole milk because I'm pregnant. But my doctor doesn't seem to think that little increase in fat would cause pancreatitis. Anyone else has something like this happen? Thanks for your help.I don't have a gallbladder any more, I had gallbladder disease and had it removed a few years ago. I also don't drink alcohol at all. Not even before I got pregnant. That's why this is a bit of a mystery. And I wasn't dehydrated either, the whole thing is just creepy and weird. more

Resolved Question: Pregnancy and gallbladder problems?

My daughter is now almost nine weeks old. When she was just six weeks old, I had to have my gallbladder removed. I went to the ER one night with severe, unexplained abdominal pain and found out that I had gallstones. Even worse, I had developed pancreatitis because of them. I had to stay in the hospital for three days with no food or water so that my pancreatic enzymes could stabilize and the operation could be done. One of the first questions I was asked was whether or not I was sick during my pregnancy. I WAS terribly sick for the better part of it, and all of the doctors and nurses said that my gallbladder could have been to blame. Has anyone ever had trouble with their gallbladders shortly after or during pregnancy, and had pregnancies afterwards that went smoothly? I would LOVE to hear if anyone has ever had a similar experience, since I have learned that gallbladder problems are common following pregnancy. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Can diverticulitis cause pancreatitis?

I have been having acute bouts of pancreatitis for quite some time now. I recently started seeing a digestive specialist for it. He has given me no answer as to why I keep getting pancreatitis but assures me that it's not my gall bladder. I have had a cat scan(with and without contrast), a MRI, EDG with CCK, and my labs always show high pancreatic enzymes. Last week the doctor told me that I have diverticulitis, and he said I was very young to have it so hesaid it could be Crohn's disease or autoimmune. Now he wants to do a colonoscopy and an EUS. Has anyone ever had this problem? more
