My father blood work just came in today because he had his yearly full body check up. It only took 2 days for the results to come in, when it usually takes about 3 weeks normally. His blood sugar results was 320 and his triglycerides was also labeled High. His symptoms are urinating frequently, being thirsty alot, and sweating (which he usually does because he is overweight.) He is a male, 68 years old, about 270 pounds, 5 ft 10 . His history involves pancreatitis and gall bladder removed (2 years ago) and high cholesterol (Thats all) I am worried for him. He refuses to go to any doctor until his comes back from a vacation in about 1 week. I keep telling him to eat fresh fruits and vegetables and lots of water, but he insists on drinking gatorade (lots), and our regular peruvian food (which is not the healthiest food, and there is healthier food available). My question is mainly, if he is a diabetic and if emergency action is necessary, like something has to be done today, or can we just wait one week for his doctor to come back?My father has taken this test last year too, and his results were in normal range and he was not showing any of these symptoms until 2 months ago. OK, I am a 16 year old male, weight 135 pounds, height 68 inches an have been having peculiar symptoms that have have been plaguing me for the last month and a half. Now for the symptoms: -loss of appetite (terrible in the morning but more recently recovers in the afternoon; often accompanied by nausea) -fatigue/ lightheaded -pain in stomach (burning feeling in stomach mainly but rarely in chest) -squeezing or gagging feeling in throat (not very severe but often exacerbates nausea) Now for some background info: It all started when I went to a camp in Washington DC. This was my first time flying alone so obviously I was a little nervous but I had been to other similar/longer camps on my own with little to no problems in previous years. Starting from day one, I could not eat a single bite of my food without being overcome by intense nausea. In the first two days the nausea and stomach pain were intense but very distinct and different than a virus like the stomach flu. On the second day after around three PM my pains and nausea were gone and I believed that I was cure (though I was fare from it). This pain and nausea recurred each day after that, beginning in the morning very severe and slowly waning throughout the day until I went to bed. These symptoms quickly were accompanied by Dizziness, Lightheadedness, fatigue, and tightening of the throat often when I would become nervous or anxious, or when I would sit in a lecture hall. Around day eight this became so bad that I actually passed out in the middle of a lecture though I was not dehydrated or even standing. Before I had left for camp I had eaten a whole jar of peepers in one sitting a few nights before as well as quickly shifting my sleeping patterns from sleeping at 3 in the morning till Noon to sleeping from 11 at night to 7 in the morning. At the very end of the camp before I could fly home I passed out in the airport and was taken to the Emergency Room. They did an Xray, CT scan, and several blood tests finding little to no evidence or reason for my symptoms. They blamed the feinting on vasovagal syncope (basically they said that the stress and fear of becoming sick in the lecture hall coupled with my "starvation" caused me to have a panic attack. My body then tried to lower my blood pressure to the point where I passed out). They said that I may have been suffering from gastritis do to the peppers I had eaten (though I have a tolerance to peppers and have done this before). The doctors ruled out obstruction, virus, and pancreatitis It has been a month and a half and my symptoms have not gone. I am taking the maximum dose of Zantac (acid reducer) along with around six tums a day with little avail against my pain and nausea. I believe that the lightheaded feelings may indeed be vasovagal because now even when doing simple things such as driving or doing to the mall, I begin to have a panic attack (probably do to the horrible experience i had at camp for two weeks). I still wake up feeling nauseated, with little appetite and feel lightheaded before lunch (around 11). I now beggin to feel better after eating lunch though it is sometimes difficult to keep lunch down. Do you have any diagnosis of what I have or any way to treat it. I am going to boarding school in a week and if this is not cured, my life will become a living nightmare. he's recovered completely, but he can't go back to his old food, maybe forever, he's currently on a brand of easily digestable food thats only available for purchase from the vet...and its so expensive. I know home made rice and chicken is an option, but my dog simply won't eat that...its gotta be kibble or canned food. My dog, Jilly is probably about 10. She's a Schnauzer Dachshund mix and she has pancreatitis. She's had it since I adopted her about 5 years ago and she gets enzymes in her food every day. She went from 12-18 pounds in the first 6 months of taking the medicine and has been pretty healthy ever since. But every once in a while, she still gets a bad tummy ache and doesn't want to eat. Usually it only lasts about 6-12 hours and she's begging for food again. The vet said that letting her wait it out and not eat for a bit is the best thing to do, but one thing I didn't think of asking, is if there's anything I can do or can give her that will make her a little more comfortable when she goes through this. We are looking to switch to a dry dog food that is 100% Free Range (including any fish that may be in the ingredients), but one of our dogs has sporadic bouts of pancreatitis, so we must feed them food that has less than 10% crude fat and is preferably high in fiber (and ideally one that won't completely break the bank). Hi I have a toy poodle that is 3 years old and has had digestive problems for a long time. Because I'm starting to think that my dog has it and our vet does not take emergency drop offs, and im entrusting my dog to another family because in two days we are going on a four day trip. My cat Homer (9yrs old) has been throwing up for the past 3 weeks. I took him to the vet who suggested giving him Pepcid AC and Flagyl, unfortunately he was still vomiting. I'm afraid he links eating with vomiting so it's even more difficult to get him to eat. I've tried various soft & hard cat foods but the only thing he seems to want to eat is yogurt and his kitty treats. On June 18th he was given a shot of vitamin B12 and a steroid shot w/a prescription for Prednisone which I administer on a daily basis. The vet also gave me 2 cans of a/d to try and although he ate about 1/2 a can's worth over a two-day period - he now has no interest even if I warm it up. I've tried deli meat, boiled chicken, tuna in water but it doesn't help. I plan on checking with my vet to see if baby food is an option but was curious to know if anyone else had any suggestions? Background on Homer - as of Feb 2010, he's had a clean bill of health. Vet suggested might be a GI infection, inflammatory bowl disease, pancreatitis or even early stages of cancer. The results of his blood work - normal. Last Thurs I took my 2 y/o cat to the vet. For 3 days prior she kept peeing outside the box, not eating and sleeping all day when she's usually ready to attack or chase me at any minute. Turned out she had a 103 fever, he kind of poked her lower back, she growled and he said its soreness due to the fever, nothing to worry about. He gave her an antibiotic and a shot to reduce her fever and said she'd be better in a 2-5 days but diagnosed her w/ 'unknown infection'. The next day she was better, she even tried to play a little. Then she got worse than when she started out. She crouched when she'd walk and only walk a few steps then just lay there. The only thing she'd eaten all week is juice from wet food and drinking water fine. She wouldn't even jump on the bed and seemed to barely make it on the couch. Today I took her back and her fever is 105. He poked that same place and said he's just going to give her a different antibiotic and wanted to keep her for maybe 2 days. They made it sound like its not a big deal but I'm freaking out. About 3 yrs ago we lost a cat who died of pancreatitis, he literally wasted away and I'm so afraid they won't find out what's wrong with her til its too late and I can't go thru that again. I feel like he's not telling me something or like she could have stones and he's not even going to bother to check, just give her more pills. I'm not a doc so I understand if I should just calm down and trust him, but I keep thinking I should just go pick her up and take her to the ER at a different animal hospital. Please give me any advice on your past experience or what you would do. She's and indoor cat and has always been healthy and she has no other symptoms. Last summer our two dachshunds nose turned pink, and they developed diarrhea. We took them to the vets. Okay, my 6 year old boxer dog Wilson wasn't feeling too good starting wednesday. On thursday night he threw up 6 times all the food he had eaten since tuesday. We took him to the vet on friday and she said he was severely dehydrated and she diagnosed him with pancreatitis and gave him a shot .. we didnt give him any food for the 1st 24 hours after that. We have give him VERY little food the last two days and have given him the pedialite frozen pops because he wont drink the liquid, even the unflavored. My question is that he has been breathing a little heavier than normal ever since. It is not super heavy but just a little more than normal for him. Any thoughts of why he is doing this?????????????.. I am going to take him in this week again just to make sure. I have had severe pain caused by gallstones and gallbladder inflammation now for over a year. The pain can come once a month or as frequently as 3 times a week and can last for anything from 20 minutes to several hours. I have put off having my gallbladder removed as I have read stories on the web about people regretting having it removed. But now, my doctor has told me it is getting more serious and I really need to have it taken out, especially as my last attack brought on the early start of pancreatitis. I am 39 years old, 5ft 8 and a normal weight for my height. I eat quite healthily during the week but have been known to indulge in something a bit more tasty (but not so healthy) at weekends. I have cut out all the major things that were triggering my attacks, such as eggs, cheese, fried food etc. and have tried drinking lots of apple juice, lemon juice and olive oil etc. as recommended in "alternative to gallbladder removal" advice pages. Since my last attack, I was too scared to eat as I had only had a jacket potato with baked beans to eat before the attack and during this time I lost 5lbs in weight. I have read about people who have put on huge amounts of weight after having the gallbladder removed, have still had pain, severe diarrhea and other complications. Obviously I know that if I have it removed I will not be able to eat junk food all the time, but I would like to think that I would be able to eat a little bit of what I fancy when I fancy it as any normal person would? My questions is really to people who have had their gallbladder removed or have genuine knowledge of this operation. Did you regret it or are you pleased you had it removed? Are there any other alternatives (apart from the flush)? Im trying to get a more accurate idea of the pros and cons of the operation as there seems to be a lot of stories on the web of people who have regretted having it done due to all the issues that come with it, but not so many stories of people who have never regretted having it done. I only know 2 people who have had it removed, in both cases it was over 20 years ago, but they both report no side effects, no problems, no change in diet, no weight gain, no diarrhea etc. So I would really like to know of anyone who has had this operation more recently and their personal opinions. I have a one year old Great Dane that has had chronic stomach issues for months now. Nothing I've tried has eliminated the problem and I've spent almost $1000 at the vet's and haven't found a solution that will work yet. His symptoms are intermittent loose stools, lack of appetite and weight loss. Some days he eats and poops normally and then he goes through phases for a few days where he doesn't want to eat much and wakes me up in the night to go out. I have wormed him (with Pyrantel pamoate) and treated him for whip worms (with Ivermectin) just in case, but he's had 3 negative fecal samples done at the vet's advice so I really don't think there is any chance that it is parasites. He had a blood work up that came back normal. Then the vet did another blood panel to test for Pancreatitis which also came back normal. The vet then said he thought it was Colitis and sold me Hill's WD prescription dog food. The first ingredient in this food is corn and it just made my dog poop 5 x more than he normally does and he seemed to lose more weight. I hate to act like I know better than a vet, but the WD formula is used for dogs that need to lose weight. My dog is already extremely skinny and not eating well. That doesn't make sense to me to give a skinny dog a diet formula. The vet said he was prescribing it because Colitis can be helped by a high fiber diet. Does anyone know of a good way to add fiber to the diet other than the prescription food? I have my dog on Blue Buffalo Salmon and Potato formula right now. He seems to have gained a pound or two back, but he's still having stomach issues. He's developing bumps on his muzzle also so now I'm wondering if he's having a reaction to something in that food. Ok, This is going to be long but I really need some answers. Im so confused at what Im supposed to do. I began seeing a GI doctor in Jan. due to food not digesting, weight loss, and constant vomiting. After a few tests he decided I have Gastroparesis ( basically my stomach is slow at digesting food) He ordered an Upper Endoscope which showed everything was fine. Before the test he was very rude to me. I told him I was in pain and had a history of pancreatitis. He basically yelled at me that he didn't think that I had that and immediately gave me the sedative to knock me out. When I woke up, He had wrote a script for Reglan and sent me home. The next morning I was in so much pain, my husband rushed me to the ER. They did blood work which reviled my liver enzymes were elevated. The CT scan came back normal. After 14 hours in the ER they admitted me. I was put on Dilaudid pain pump. I was in the hospital for 18 days. No tests were ever done. They assumed I was there for the pain medicine. I couldnt get the Drs to listen to me. ( BTW Im 22 years old, and before this, I had NEVER taken anything stronger than a tylenol for pain) They let me lay in the hospital for 18 days without passing a BM, I was so uncomfortable, I was miserable. Finally, I got transferred by ambulance to a different hospital. At the new hospital I had an ERCP procedure done and a stint placed into my pancreas ( They found I had a sphincter of the Oddi dysfunction). They put me on pancreas enzyme pills along with a list of other medicines. I started feeling great. Now this past week, the pain has returned. Its been 2 months since my ERCP was done. Im on a durasegic pain patch to help with the pancreatitis but its just not helping the pain. My husband took me to the ER, the Dr gave me dilaudid script and told me to return if it didnt control the pain. So on Sunday I returned to the ER. ( Also I havent been able to keep ANYTHING down, becoming very dehydrated and weak. Ive lost 35 pounds in 2 months) After 10 hours in the ER My GI Dr wouldnt admit me, he wanted to talk to me 1st. Basically he said " I dont know what to do with you, you cant sit in the hospital for weeks on pain medicine. We arent finding anything wrong. If you want to lay around all the time why dont we just put you into a nursing home" He then sent me home to suffer. Now heres the problem. This GI Dr is wanting to see me in 2 weeks. I really dont want to see him again. He didnt listen to me at my appointment in the 1st place. He made it seem like Ive been in chronic pain for 8 years which is not the case. I have had GERD for 8 years but not in pain. I just dont know what to do. Should I make an appointment and get crappy with him THEN switch Drs? Okay so my four year old dog, Teddy, has been through so much from being diagnoised with epilepsy at 6 months of age to now having pancreatitis. Now he is much better after IV and everything but he is refusing to eat the Royal Canine dog food his doctor prescribed as well as having slight diarrhea. When I was 11 years old I was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. I had never had any alcohol in my life so that one is off the list. I had to have a nasogastric tube in me for 3 and a half days while on a IV and i wasn't allowed to be put back onto liquids for another two weeks. when i kept the water down they moved me onto food and eventually they let me out. in outpatients, i saw every specialist that i could and i had ever scan and test available including that for gallstones and billias slat, and its neither of them. I had numerous MRCP scans and ultrasounds, both showed nothing, my family and i also had a test done to see if this was hereditoy in my family or if i could give it to my children should i ever have any. the results said no. In the end they put me down to an UNKNOWN CAUSE. 4 years later (just a few weeks ago) I got acute pancreatitis again and then had a relapse after that, i had to go through the whole traumatic experience again with tubes, scans and an IV and i am now back at home recovering. in a few weeks i will have another MRCP scan. HOWEVER I NEED YOUR HELP i know that these scans will just come up with nothing again, but i am very anxious to find out what causes this, anything at all apart from the mentioned above. If there are any nurses or doctors out there who could shed some possible light on this matter i would be very grateful. okay, so, i'm not an expert or anything in cat health. ALL of my cats have ALWAYS been healthy, therefore leaving me no reason to actually worry. until now. i have a neutered male cat that's about 9 years old, who started, out of nowhere, to sleep a lot more than usual, lost a little weight, stopped eating so much, and didn't want anything to do with water, which he's always loved. after about a week of very little eating/drinking, and the same lack of energy, we took him in, the vet spent 5 minutes with him, took a blood/urine test, and the next day called and said he thinks oreo has pancreatitis. so, i went in, got clavamox (i'm pretty sure that's what it's called) and some of the science diet a/d stuff, which he was mildly interested in in the office. came home, thought everything was fine. a couple days later he started breathing really funny, and coughing a lot. my mom called the next morning and we took oreo back in, getting an x ray this time, which showed a BUNCH of fluid in his lungs. right. he didn't say anything about the pancreatitis, or how he should be doing, but we got medicine (i don't know what this is called) that's supposed to help with the pneumonia and causes him to drink/pee more. yippee. it's been about five days since then, and i'm taking him back in on monday, but there's been VERY little improvement. i've done research, and some people say that i'm supposed to force-feed him and others that say it's bad. i don't know what to do :/ so, i guess my overall question is, while he's drinking now, and peeing fine, what should i do about the food? the vet i go to i don't trust at all, and he's not helpful in the least. should i continue to force-feed him (i do about 1/4 a can at 7 am, spread that through the day, and 1/4 a can at 7 pm, spread through the night, along with both medicines at the same time), or should i commit him to the vet's for IV fluids and food fed right into the intestines or something similar? i don't want to hurt him - and i want him to recover; it hurts to see him so thin and not being able to really help him... i don't want to put him down, either. i mean, if it's necessary because he's just going to die anyways from this, then... yeah... to ease his suffering, but... please don't suggest that. it isn't what i want to hear when there's a little hope for him left. any answers are appreciated. thanks guys. My one dog a small 8lb dog needs a food low in fat and protein or he gets very sick she he is on California Naturals Herring and Sweet potato. (He has had pancreatitis and other gastrointestinal issues CN has been the best food ever for him with those issues and his food allergies, he also can't tolerate corn) My other dog is a larger (still a small dog) more sporty dog, a Terrier mix who is extremely athletic, she needs a more balanced diet. We feel feeding her such a limited diet is causing her more harm than good. We thought about putting her on Innova and leaving him on California Naturals but that just doesn't seem to be option right now. (That would be around $60 a month vs $30...then again them each having their own bag would last them 2 months each...so it may be doable...a 15lb bag of CN lasts the 2 of them a month) So in the meantime I need a food they will both thrive and be healthy on, any suggestions?The issue with getting the two different foods roughly 30 bucks a piece is spending the $60 a month vs $30. My 6 year old cat has been diagnosed with pancreatitis. This all started on March 27th, when I noticed my cat was being anti-social (he is abnormally cuddly for a cat - he just can't get enough attention!)and hadn't eaten in a day and a half, but was still drinking normally. We brought him to the vet, and based on the symptons, he thought maybe my cat had pancreatitis. We couldn't really afford an ultrasound that day, so he put my cat on Cyproheptadine (appetite stimulant) and a general antibiotic in case it was a cold. He still wasn't eating on last Wednesday the 31st. I took him to the animal ER hospital near me ( as it was 11pm) and they gave him more Normosol (like pedialyte for cats) and sent him home with a big IV bag of it that I have to give him nightly. They told me to call back the next day to schedule an ultrasound, but that turned out to be a whole fiasco where the ultrasound guy had an out of town emergency, so I couldn't get to my normal vet until this past Saturday April 3rd. Did the ultrasound and everything looked ok, liver and stomach wise, but vet said definetely signs of pancreatitis. So they gave him a bunch of shots, and he ate later that night- some boiled plain chicken. He also ate a little Sunday morning, but again now, he ha stopped eating, and he isn't drinking. My vet said he isn't showing any signs of pain. He is sleeping a lot and when I give him attention, he is still purring. I am beside myself with worry and I just don't how to get through this. He just doesn't seem to be getting better yet, and I am just wondering if anyone else on here has had this problem, if you could tell me how long it took your cat to heal or any suggestions you have? OK where to begin. My doctor/s have given me a prescription for a Dog to help me with my PTSD, and Chronic depression. I think it is safe to say I have been through the ringer. I really do not like to talk about it and avoid the questions I get from others once they find out what I did when I worked for the government. Reoccurring nightmares, Cold Sweats and more meds than a frickin pharmacy. I love dogs and it seems like its the only time I feel normal. I have been through just about every "program" from Pets for Vets to CCI (Canine Companions for independence). From there I went to shelters and there I found one dog that I just fell in love with. He was a Black Lab/Pit Bull cross (though I could never see the pit in him personality wise or physicaly). 2 Weeks later he stopped drinking water and after a week later and $1200 worth of vet visits I found out he had Chronic Severe pancreatitis. He died a week later. A local small animal rescue heard about my situation (how I have no idea) and offered to help find me a healthy dog. After about a month a searching we found a pure breed Black Lab he is 18 months and has a great disposition. Now with my Dr.'s prescription it qualified me to have most of the costs of the dog icluding vet bills insurance, a small stipend for food and about 20 dollars for incidentals such as chew bones, Kennels and brushes. Anyhow, part of the deal with me is that I need to find a dog that's in good health and is expected to stay that way and is no older than 3/half years old. No aggressive pure breeds such as Rottweilers , Pit Bulls Doberman etc... Now each dog I get I have a 25 day period to find out if the would be dog is for me and that it is in good health. During that time if I find that I can a dog that has no pre existing conditions and fits in with my life style the state will reimburse me at the end of each fiscal year. Well with the dog I have now I thought I had a home run. Although it was not specifically the color or sex I was looking for he was defiantly in good health and his and my personality fit fairly well. A few bugs but I don't need perfection. Well now I have had him for about 17 days and last night I discovered he is epileptic. F#@%! I am looking left and right but not much luck. I did find a breeder that offered me one of his pups but I would have to pay for shipping. There was no way I could pay that much. So now I have Thor (the dog that has epilepsy, and yesterday at about 9PM on March 17th 2010 somehow slipped out of his harness and got hit by a car sorry folks its hard not to laugh) as far as the injury's he sustained part of hit little tail was cut up pretty bad and he got his bell rung pretty good other than that he is just fine not so much as a slight concusion, aside from his previous condition. I posted a questions a couple of days ago and i greatly appreciate the feedback and answers. Unfortunately my cat is still having problems. I am going to list his symptoms and everything he has been tested for and hopefully i will get some much needed advice He is a 6 year old male cat, he is an indoor cat. His symptoms are Vomits all food, it is undigested and is accompanied by white mucus and white foam. Its not rabies, the vomit is classified as respitory fluid, But his lungs are completley clear. As for cleaning products all our cleaning products were approved by our vet when our dog had allergies this past summer. All the cleaning products we have are all pet friendly approved.he has been tested for all parasites and toxins/ poisins. My husband has MS and some other health issues (fatty liver and pancreatitis). Recently, several bloody, small skin ulcers popped up all over his legs, stomach, and a few on the back of his neck. He refuses to see the doc (he is going through difficult time with depression currently as well). He is not on any new medications but is generally in poor health. He doesn't eat right and continues to drink alcohol several times a week. I'm just very frustrated with him currently for refusing to see a doc..but wondering what opinions here might be. My first thought was weak immune system. These ulcers seems to scab over and then they open again and bleed. Some will go away but then new ones come up. I realize no one can diagnose him but wondering in general what can cause such a thing...especially given that we know it is not a reaction to a medication, new food, or new chemical. Coco is 10 years old, and this occurs in older dogs. Her hips have been hurting her for the past year and half. She has lumps on her upper belly and hips. She has been excessively panting. I think we should take her too the vet, but last time we did, the vet said "Oh don't worry about the lumps!", and we didnt think anything of it. I really want to know if she has it, thank you! Got home and he was playing in the garden. Come tea time he was in his bed, we went out and didn't think anything of it. Got back at midnight and he hadn't moved, I knew something was wrong and came down in the night to check on him. The next day he clearly had a fever and was breathing fast. My friend who is a vet nurse said it could have been his booster. Rung the vets but they said "it definitely won't be the booster". He seemed a bit better Monday but then worse on Tuesday so I took him to vet. His temperature was 104.6!! They gave him some metacam and an antibiotic injection and sent him home. He had been off his food totally and went straight home to eat, thank goodness! The next day he seemed to be going back down hill yet again. Took him back to the vets, they kept him in on a drip and next morning he was raging to get out and came home, bright as a button! By Sunday he was quiet again, not eating much, obviously not well. Took him back to vets that week, (temperature 103.8) they kept him in and did more bloods (bloods for first week showed low white cell count and high urea but nothing major). They kept him in for three days, tested leukemia and FIV, both negative. Did more bloods second week and they were normal. Hugo didn't respond to metacam (painkiller to reduce temperature) or the drip during the first 24 hours, he only showed improvement with steroids. By Thursday he seemed a bit better and came home but I knew he wasn't right. I had asked about all kinds of diseases, including lymphoma, Feline peritonitis, inflamed bowel disease, all the major cat illnesses (leukemia etc.) but the vets didn't seem to think anything seemed familiar. Female vet said, "he's not losing enough weight for anything serious". I asked for an Xray and ultrasound scan but they said it wasn't necessary. Went back in on Saturday for another steroid injection. By following Friday he was the same, went back again and they gave him methodone, I was beside myself at this point. They said that they thought his kidneys were swollen but kidney function on bloods were normal. He was eating little bits but not much, he had gone from 3.82kg to 3.61kg. I went home that weekend and nursed him all I could, I let him sleep with me in the spare room, I knew he was seriously unwell. Monday morning came and I was back at the vets with him, asking them to take him in on the drip as I knew this had helped before. They were suspecting pancreatitis. Tests done for this and more bloods showed negative for pancreatitis and some deterioration in the kidneys function. I was begging for a scan, they just kept shooting me down and saying a scan wouldn't show anything. On Wednesday afternoon female vet rang me and said that they wanted to operate, despite not doing the scan that I had requested so many times. I agreed to it but when I went to the vets that night to see my darling Hugo they had been arguing about whether to operate and the male partner in the vets over ruled the female as we were then waiting for pancreatitis test to come back. Test came back negative on 25th Feb so they were planning on operating on 26th Feb to see if they could see anything. When I got there that Thursday evening to see my soulmate Hugo he was in severe pain, could hardly breath and it broke my heart to see him like that. They gave him more methadone to ease the pain which it did. He had another session of difficulty breathing at 10.30pm that evening, they managed to settle him with oxygen and methadone but he died as he yelled out in pain at 11.00pm. I am totally devasted. Hugo, my best friend, I miss you dearly xx I am beating myself up about this, I took him to a trusted vet, did all the research I could, took advice whilst Hugo was in hospital from two other vets. Im having a scope done tomorrow morning to figure out why food is not entering my stomach for hours after eating. Even after eating it stays in my stomach 12 + hours which makes me very sick. Anyways, I started having really horrible pain, right below my rib cage in the middle. Its becoming unbearable. I had Pancreatitis when I was 16 ( 6 years ago) and it was the most horrible experience Ive ever had. This pain is beginning to make me wonder if that is happening again. Not dog food. People food. I know I get very angry. Today, we had family over, and my cousin was eating some horseradish cheese (can anyone say disgusting?). I went into my bedroom to grab my cell phone, and when I came back out I see him handing Jinx this cheese! HORSERADISH cheese. I was pissed (excuse my french.)!!!!!! I mean, seriously, I was pissed enough that he just fed my dog without my permission, but this is something that could hurt Jinx's stomach and cause constipation. It wasn't much, but enough to still hurt his stomach. I told him that he better pray he doesn't get sick, because I'd be calling him yelling at his stupidity. I didn't say anything else, because we had a 6y/o over, and I really didn't want to ruin the mood. I later did mention something to my parents, to have them help me watch Jinx, to be sure he was ok. He's fine. But I was SO royally PISSED that he did that. It all started when we gave him some canned Iams food (he's normally on Natural Balance dry food but we were running low so I thought supplementing with a little canned would be fine until I could get to Petco to get more dry food). Vomitting, mucousy stools, no appetite--all the classic symptoms. He's been in and out of the vet office for a month now with fevers and weight loss. He started at 20 lbs and he's down to 14 now. I am 28 and have a history of abdominal pain. 2 Years ago I was taking birth control pills but had to quit because I was developing pancreatitis, although I never got to the point of having an actual attack. After I quit the pill I got pregnant (Duh!) 3 months later and my son is now 10 months old. During that time I was pain-free and had an IUD with no hormones. I don't drink or smoke. I do hit the fast food places a little more often than I should not and every now and then I got mild discomfort on the same area. I weight 148 pounds. Well, last month I had a cold and took Tylenol Multi-symptom twice a day for about a week, and after that my IUD was coming out of my cervix and I had to take a Plan B double pill (those have about 10 times the amount of a reg. birth control pill) to avoid another pregnancy now. My period started off time and I got mild to moderate pain on my left abdominal side with nausea, vomit and dhiarrea. X-rays and ultrasound showed uncomplicated pancreatitis, no gallstones. Dr. ordered to take Nexium and see a GI. GI ordered MRCP a few days later which showed also no gallstones, good liver, and decreased inflamation, etc. blood tests before and after the situation showed a bit higher than normal levels of amylase, lypase, and sugar; days after fat-free, sugar-free diet, levels back to normal. My period is over and I feel the pain is starting to subside slowly each day. I am sticking with lots of fluids, fruits, vitamins, veggies, wheat products and no alcohol, dairy, fried foods or lipids whatsoever. I am going to see the dr. back on Thursday. Given my history and the risks that ERCP has... should I go for it or rather wait and stick with a non-fat diet and no drugs that can hurt my tummy?? Hello Usually I would call my vet for something like this, but seeing it's Family day, the vet is not in today and I would like some feedback... So long story short, my cat (11 years old, indoors only) has been through a lot recently, such as chronic pancreatitis. She's slowly getting better, but she still isn't her usual self yet. She has days when she seems somewhat fine, but also days like today when she seems depressed, nauseous, and not eating. The vet says her pancreas is still inflamed and that she has a pseudo-cyst on it that may be aggravating her symptoms. We're giving her metoclopramide (injection), codeine (a gel we put on her ear) every day, and some digestive enzymes (powder) whenever we can. But even though we're giving her metoclopramide for the nausea and vomiting, she still continues to vomit. It's usually bile, or clear saliva-like vomit, or frothy white stuff, rarely any food. Before it used to be once a day, but the past day it's been more often (4~6 times a day). When we brought this up before, the vet didn't seem overly concerned, as long as her temperature is normal (which it has been). SO I haven't tried Pepcid AC yet for the vomiting, and would like to try it (seeing that the metoclopramide doesn't seem to be doing much at all). I know it's 1/4 tablet, 10 mg once/twice a day for a cat.... The only problem is that my cat has a low-grade heart murmur. I read on some sites that Pepcid may be bad to give if the cat/person has a heart rhythm problem. I wouldn't consider myself a heavy drinker, but I used to go out drinking on fri. and sat. when I was in school, for about 3 years. Last weekend I went to Gasparilla in tampa and drank way too much and blacked out and threw up, which has only happened to me maybe twice before? -so it's rare for me to black out and vomit. That was 7 days ago and I have had pain throughout my diaphram area (right along the bottom of my rib cage) some pain for a day or so in my lower back, and some pain in my obliques all seven days since then. I'm relatively average in tummy size, so if I try to "suck in" my stomach everything feels strained, but if I let my stomach puff out and relax fully, it still feels stretched and gurgles with slight muscle spasms, like I can feel food digesting. The pain has gotten slowly better each day, but seems to be hovering at this point, as I've felt about the same for about 48 hours now. I'm very worried that I have severely damaged something in my body either from drinking, or thowing up so hard, and rest assured I'm pretty sure my days of getting drunk are over. I just want to know why I feel this way and fix it. From what I can piece together it seems like I either pulled muscles in my core, or I have pancreatitis! There have been a couple incidents recently where I've woken up early in the morning with severe pain in my upper right chest/back area. The pain lasts for hours and I noticed that both came after eating spicey foods just before bed the night before (not smart on my part, I know). I'm wondering if this could be pancreatitis or something else. There have been times after eating larger meals where I feel some soreness in my right upper abdomen but these two incidents are nothing like that. The pain was very hard to deal with and almost had me wanting to go to the emergency room. I'm not sure if I have a low pain tolerance or if it really was that bad. I have a 9 year old boxer/lab mix that hasn't been herself lately. The past few months she hasn't been eating her normal amount of food. About two weeks ago, she started vomiting a lot. Last Saturday, I was out of town, and my mother took her to the emergency vet because she hadn't eaten in a few days, was vomiting up her water, and had bloody diarrhea. The vet said she was dehydrated and put a water pack in her back. They ran some blood work and did an abdominal x-ray. Nothing showed up, other than her pancreas was inflamed. The vet wanted to keep her overnight to hook her up to an IV, but my mom decided against it (mainly because she thought the dog would be more comfortable at home). They gave her an antibiotic to give her every 12 hours. They told my mom to wait 12 hours to give her water. If she kept that down, we could feed her a bland diet of hamburger and rice every 4 hours. She kept her water down and was eating regularly until Wednesday. On Thursday, my dad took her to our regular vet for me (I couldn't get out of work), and the vet said she was still dehydrated and she has pancreatitis. He told him to keep giving her the antibiotic the other vet gave us and also gave us another one. He also told my dad to give her an antacid every night at bedtime. She still wouldn't eat Thursday night or yesterday. She is very lethargic and only gets off the couch or chair to go outside. We can bring her water dish to her, and she will drink. She turns her head at food and starts to gag when we bring food to her, though. My sister and I got her to eat two pieces of meat, but that's not enough. Her eyes are still very animated, though. She barks when someone comes in the door, and she wags her tail when we talk to her. I just don't know how much longer she can go without eating or what to do. The emergency vet told my mom last week that the next step is an ultrasound. I talked to our vet, and he told me that he couldn't get us one until later next week, but he deals with the emergency vet and the emergency vet suggested we go there. I called to make an appointment, and they told me they needed a referral. With the referral, they can't take her until Monday. The only way we could possibly get one sooner is to admit her to the emergency room again, but they can't guarantee us one. I'm just at a loss here. I love this dog. I've had her since I was 14, and she was only 5 weeks old. I don't want to see her starve herself. Is there anything I can do?She normally eats Iams Large Breed. I have a female pit-bull who will be two years old in March. When she was 8 months old she was diagnosed with Demodex, she got treatment for it and it went away. Maybe a month later she got sick and was throwing up and losing all her hair again. I took her back to the vet and she was diagnosed with Pancreatitis. We changed her diet to the ID prescription dog food and we don't giver her table scraps but she will from time to time get sick and throw up and not want to eat or drink. The skin issue was never solved until last October. The vet said she had Staph bacteria infection in her skin. She was put on antibiotics for a month and she didn't break out again until just a few days ago and now she isn't wanting to eat or drink that much. My husband and I have done everything we can think of for her and have spent around 1500 dollars in vet bills in the past year. I feel bad because I don't know if she is in pain and we can't afford to keep taking her to vet. My husbands work requires us to travel around the U.S. and it doesn't make the situation better. We also don't know anyone who would take her and be able to spend this kind of money on her. And I've already called an adoption agency for just pit-bulls and they told me they can't take her beacuse of her health issues. My dog (a little chihuahua X)came down sick Wednesday evening. I noticed earlier that afternoon he was acting a little funny by laying in my other dog's crate...which is odd because he hates crates. Anyway, I went to feed all the dogs a couple hours later(there's 4 total in the house), and noticed that he didn't want to eat, so I heated up a little wet food for him, which he ate. At this point I felt his stomach and noticed it was REALLY hard and tight and he seemed quite under the weather (his tail was down, and he usually has a tail that curls over his back). I was so concerned with how tight and hard his stomach felt that I brought him to the emergency vet within a half hour of noticing this. There were 2 critical cases ahead of us and one doctor, so we ended up waiting 2 hours before my dog was even seen. All the emergency vet did was feel him and take x rays. He said his stomach felt normal (even after I stressed that it wasn't normal for my dog). The vet said everything looked normal on the x ray--no twisting or sign of bloat, but that there was a lot of food in his stomach (and I hadn't fed him much that evening before taking him). That vet put him on metoclopramide, and sent us home. Noticing that he wasn't getting any better, I brought him to my regular vet (with the ok from the emergency vet) yesterday, before the holiday weekend. The regular vet gave him subcutaneous fluids, took more xrays, ran a blood work panel and a snap test for pancreatitis. I showed my regular vet the x rays from the emergency vet, and he said that in one of them, some of my dog's organs were kind of squished up almost into his ribcage and his stomach size was borderline normal, but enlarged. In the x ray taken yesterday, his organs appeared normal, and his stomach was at a normal size again--but the lining was quite a bit thicker than normal. The blood work panel came back normal all around and the pancreatitis test was negative. They told me he had an inflamed digestive tract, but they didn't know what was causing it, so they told me to finish the two day metoclopramide from the emergency vet and give him and bland diet (hamburger and rice) and wait a couple days and see. He seems really listless, just sleeping on the couch or in a crate all day unless it's time to eat or someone comes to the door (in which case he'll do a subdued alarm bark). He doesn't seem to be drinking on his own, so I've been giving him some broth (a tiny bit of wet dog food + water) which he'll drink. His bowel movements have been at normal intervals and of regular consistency, although not nearly as big or as much as normal (think the thickness of earthworms, instead of the normal thickness which is the diameter of a nickel<<sorry bad analogy, but you get the point?). His belly continues to be really tense and painful. About an hour ago though, he passed some diarrhea (?). My grandma let him out in the back yard when I was getting out of the shower. She said it poured out of him. I checked it out a few minutes later, and it was nearly all mucus with what I think appear to be tiny pebbles of fully formed stool. I don't think he got into anything. He was only alone for one hour the day he became ill and he isn't the kind of dog to get into anything. The only thing I can think of is that a few days ago I saw there was a recall on cow hooves for salmonella concerns. My dogs got their first cow hooves a few weeks ago. I also started thinking and I realized that just last week I gave them all raw marrow bones that I got from the grocery store. I usually pick them up after a few hours, but this time there was one that didn't get eaten and sat out for a day. But if it were either of those two things, wouldn't the other three dogs be sick as well? I also work at a dog boarding kennel and this dog is one of two I bring to work with me, so illness from other dogs is also a possibility. Please keep in mind--this isn't just a minor digestive upset. I see minor upsets all the time at work, and this is not that. My dog is in a lot of physical pain as well. What I'd like to know is: what do you think is the cause my dog's inflamed stomach and digestive tract? I'd just like some input so I can keep an open mind about the cause of his illness and present some possibilities to the vet if he doesn't improve over the weekend. I went out for a night of heavy drinking last thursday knowing that my body is intolerant of alcohol. (REAL smart, I know) Spent the whole day friday in bed vomiting. Feeling crummy but much better on saturday. Sunday rolls around and I'm feeling alright so I cooked some steaks for dinner. Approx. an hour after eating I suddenly developed what felt like some vicious indigestion in my upper abdomen. The pain lasted at least 12 hours straight and worsened when I was in bed. Made it through Monday day without any noticeable pain but woke up about 3 am Tuesday morning with horrible upper abdominal pain. I took some tums both nights which seemed to help, but now today I have a constant discomfort and tenderness. Vibration seems to be an irritant along with pressure and breathing. I am a 25 year old female with suspected auto-immune disorder, 46 known food allergies, TMJ, Interstitial Cystitis, and I'm being treated for Fibromyalgia. And please no lectures about the drinking, I am an adult and perfectly aware that it is bad for me.Had a CTscan done today and it turns out that I have bilateral ovarian cysts. I’m looking for any advise as I’m at a loss. My 3 year old Shih Tzu was diagnosed with pancreatitis a week and a half ago. She has been back and forth to the vet. Every time she started to get better and eat again (giving her very small amounts) the next morning the symptoms would return. Part of the issue was that she was having a bad reaction to the antibiotic they had her one. As soon as we stopped giving that to her (per the Dr. orders) she sparked back up and got her appetite back. We though we were home free. She was great all day yesterday. Playful, energetic, ate her food, stool started to get back to normal. Then before bed she vomited her food. She ate a few pieces of her food and then went to sleep. Middle of the night we hear her tummy making crazy noises…and vomit again and then the diarrhea started up again. It like any food in her tummy she want it out. So I’m trying to figure out what caused this to happy and why it keep happening. She is VERY allergic to almost everything so all she ever eats is Advoderm Beef and Natures Miracle Lamb Treats as a snack. She has been eating this for 2+ years with no problem. So…. -Could she all of the sudden out of the blue become sensitive to her food. Either allergic or could it be too fatty to set off the pancreatitis? -Could there be something wrong with the food? If you already know which of these foods listed are truly bad for a dog, will you please save me hours and hours of research trying to check which are true? I don't want to make my dog sick, but I don't want to spend my whole life researching every toxic thing on the planet instead of spending time with my family (dog included). Onions (Both onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient Thiosulphate. But onions are more of a danger. Many dog biscuits contain *small* amounts of garlic – garlic contains less of this toxin so huge amounts would need to be consumed to be toxic. And, by the way, this poison builds up the system – it can be toxic in one large dose – or with repeated consumption of small amounts.) 2. Chocolate (Chocolate contains Theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. This can be fatal to dogs.) 3. Grapes (Grapes are dangerous because of an unknown substance which is toxic to dogs – affects canine’s kidneys) 4. Raisins (See above.) 5. Most Fruit Pits and Seeds (Contain Cyanogenic Glycosides resulting in cyanide poisoning – though the fruit itself is OK.) 6. Macadamia Nuts (Macadamia nuts contain an unknown substance that is toxic to dogs.) 7. Bones (Most bones should *not* be given (especially chicken bones) because they can splinter and cause laceration of the digestive system and/or become lodged in your pet’s throat – so they also pose a choking hazard.) Raw bones are generally fine, but Chicken wings poze a choking hazard to large dogs. 8. Potato Peelings and Green Potatoes (Contain Oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems.) 9. Rhubarb leaves (See above.) 10. Broccoli (Broccoli is only toxic in large quantities.) 11. Green parts of Tomatoes or Green Potatoes (Contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems.) 12. Yeast Dough (Yeast Dough can produce gas and swell in your pet’s stomach – leading to rupture of the digestive system) THey mean Yeast Dough-which us Uncooked Bread.
