Open Question: Can a darkskinned black women with natural black features become famous?

Hi I'm 14 and im black but I'm not an African American im from Islander descent (Bahamas and Jamaica). Has a side dream (My other dream is to actually find a cure for HIV/AIDS to help africans although i need help finding out exactly what job does that)I always wanted to be a famous r&b singer and sing nice positive, uplifting songs and dance but dress appropriately and be a positive influence. But recently I started giving up on this dream because this year i keep hearing people say in order for you to ever be famous like Beyonce and Rihanna you need to have certain features like light skin, thinner nose, etc. Now I am dark skinned( like Gabrielle Union and Kelly Rowland), have a flat little button nose that isnt wide with a nose bridge that isn't very noticeable, full lips, kinky-curly hair, a baby face. People keep saying that I'm cute and pretty but now I have low self esteem because of it and I never had this problem until last year September. Now I'm disappointed because it seems like I don't have the same opportunities as people who have these features. So I ask this question because I was curious what others think about this. Do you think just maybe if a pretty darkskinned woman with black features were to make it to the top and be as famous as Beyonce but also be a positive influence and dress appropriatly do you think that will change the standards for hollywood? Also please be reasonable and calm and don't put up stupid and/or hateful stuff. Sorry that this is sort of long I was just trying to explain myself so I can achieve the answers that I'm so desperately looking for. Thank you in advance :)! more

Resolved Question: Can you please evaluate my statement of purpose? It takes time to read..?

Hi I am a foreign Dentist applying for DDS in USA.This is my personal statement.I want some suggestions from you.Which paragraph do you find interesting and which needs to be improved? Thank you all. Having a medical background in family, my magnetism towards health profession was obvious. Since upbringing days, I have perceived health care wholeheartedly and I feel amazed how it helps patients to cure their problems. Two questions always baffled me - Why do people get into health problems and what is the best way to keep human lives happy? A truly desire to intricate artistic work in order to widen horizons of the field prospects is one of the essential characteristic of Dentistry and I have been encouraging to craft some creative art pieces with own hands ever since I was a child. Discussing with family, I could conclude that one of the best way to please people is to make them smile and as a result, my desire to pursue Dentistry makes sense to me. I am a young dynamic gentleman born and raised in India. I pursued ‘Bachelor of Dental Surgery’ from M.P. Dental College located in Vadodara, India. During college, my interest continued to grow as I engaged deeply in subject knowledge. Active participation in survey projects, research, conferences, seminars and group discussions remarkably fostered my professional skills. During a two day workshop on ‘Oral Health Care and HIV/AIDS’ held at our college , I met Dr. Jeffery Hill, an instructor in the department of Comprehensive Dentistry at the University of Alabama. He provided great insight into health education in the USA. That day I fully realized the value of obtaining U.S. dental school education. As a part of coursework, I had the privilege of serving in an internship position for one year. While serving as an intern in college, I worked at numerous free dental camps for rural population, among different cultures and languages, in which, I realized the potentially holistic approach to serve society in order to improve their oral hygiene. Acknowledging detrimental effects of smoking and chewing tobacco with the intention of inducing patients to maintain dental health was my primary crusade. To glimpse Dentistry in USA, I spent several weeks actively acquiring valuable work experience at two dental offices. I was offered the opportunity to shadow Dr. Nikunj M. Raiyani, a general dentist, for a month. It was a valuable experience and provided me with a further insight into day-to-day dental management. Shadowing Dr. Dennis L. Gorospe, who is an oral & maxillofacial surgeon, permitted me to observe a better office settings than the one I was used to. Along with clinical experience it provided me an opportunity to connect with patients from diverse ages and social backgrounds effectively. This experience has further reinforced my desire to apply for the program specially designed for foreign graduate dentists. In my spare time, I read Dental articles so as to keep myself updated with recent advancements and technological developments in Dentistry. I like to play badminton and especially chess. I was one of the top three chess players of my college. It helps me to stay calm in stressful circumstances. Looking to the future I would love to own my own dental practice. I am sure the program offered by your school is the best choice that will not only sharpen the skills already acquired through prior education but also widen my horizon with new skills and techniques. The USA offers excellent education and state-of-the-art-facilities and I would be delighted to study in such an environment. more

Resolved Question: A question about STDS?

I hear that some STDS, like Chlamydia, Trichomoniasis, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis can be cured with the use of medication. The ones that cannot be cured are HPV, Genital Herpes, Hepatitis B, and the HIV infection. I have a new boyfriend. He and I care about each other so much. He's only ever had one girl sexually in his life, and he is sure he doesn't have anything. I, on the other hand, have been with two separate guys, one was a long-term boyfriend who never gave me anything, and the other guy is someone I had a casual fling with. The second guy is who I have the most concern about because he has that questionable reputation. What if I get something serious? How can my bf and I be safe with each other? :( Thank you... PS- It's been about... 5 months since I last had sexual contact with the fling guy. I have experienced no symptoms but I understand that not all STDS have signs. Am I going to be okay? more

Open Question: What could be the cause of leukopenia and long-term illness?

About 2 and a half years ago I started to have headaches and overwhelming tiredness. I was sent for an MRI and everything appeared normal. A couple of months later I started to suffer from recurrent infections and illnesses. In the last 2 years I have had many infections including: Recurrent UTI's, kidney infection, recurrent uvulitis, ear infections, recurrent thrush, lymphadenitis and cellulitis (the last 2 requiring hospitalisation). I have also had lots of viruses, colds and flu symptoms. On a regular basis I suffer from migraines/headaches, aching limbs, neck, shoulders and backache, numbness in arms and hands, with loss of dexterity in the fingers, fatigue, skipped heart-beats and chest pain, 'brain fog' and occasional blurred vision, occasional low grade fever, and more recently muscle twitching, spasms and cramps. I eat a healthy diet although I am unable to exercise due to chronic pain. I have put on 2 stone in 2 years but this may be due to lack of exercise and my age - 40 years. I have also had bouts of depression, usually as a result of being so fed up of it all. I was referred to an Infectious Diseases Specialist about 18 months ago, and initially it was suggested possible CFS. She has run many blood tests to rule out things like thyroid, diabetes and HIV, and I have also had an ECG and cardiac scan. Although my blood tests are usually relatively normal (apart from when I am really ill), the one thing that does crop up almost every time is a low white blood cell count. Neutropenia and leukopenia have been noted on several occasions. I recently had another test and all was normal apart from a low absolute leukocyte count (normal range 1.5 - 4.......mine was 1.1). As yet I still don't have a diagnosis and I am really wanting some answers so that I can begin treatment or a cure. I am fed up of having so many illnesses and infections and feeling so damn ill all the time, and having no idea of the prognosis. Am I right in assuming that the reason I am always getting ill is because of the leukopenia? Or is the leukopenia a result of always being ill? Does anyone have any ideas of what could be the cause? Or any suggestions of a diagnosis? Or can you suggest or recommend any more tests? I would be very grateful for any assistance, thanks.I also suffer from a lot of sores, on my mouth and in my nose, and get lots of mouth ulcers. more

Voting Question: How can America re-implement Eugenics strictly for diseases dangerous to the future of our society?

WE CAN CURE VIRTUALLY EVERY DISEASE KNOWN TO MAN THROUGH THIS PROCESS. I DON"T ADVOCATE KILLING THEM, ONLY STERILIZATION THROUGH SURGERY SO THEY CAN NOT REPRODUCE IF THEY HAVE A DISEASE SUCH AS HIV/AIDS. DON"T TELL ME IT CAN"T BE DONE NOR IT HASN"T BEEN DONE IN AMERICA. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the 1927 Buck v. Bell case that the state of Virginia could sterilize those it thought unfit. The state of California was at the vanguard of the American eugenics movement, performing about 20,000 sterilizations or one third of the 60,000 nationwide from 1909 up until the 1960s. By 1910, there was a large and dynamic network of scientists, reformers and professionals engaged in national eugenics projects and actively promoting eugenic legislation. The American Breeder’s Association was the first eugenic body in the U.S., established in 1906 under the direction of biologist Charles B. Davenport. The ABA was formed specifically to “investigate and report on heredity in the human race, and emphasize the value of superior blood and the menace to society of inferior blood.” Membership included Alexander Graham Bell, Stanford president David Starr Jordan and Luther Burbank. When Nazi administrators went on trial for war crimes in Nuremberg after World War II, they justified the mass sterilizations (over 450,000 in less than a decade) by citing the United States as their inspiration. The Nazis had claimed American eugenicists inspired and supported Hitler's racial purification laws, and failed to understand the connection between those policies and the eventual genocide of the Holocaust.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EugenicsTo Laura B. You must have HIV so I think you are biased. Women can transmit HIV to their babies during pregnancy or birth. Approximately one-quarter to one-third of all untreated pregnant women infected with HIV will pass the infection to their babies. HIV also can be spread to babies through the breast milk of mothers infected with the virus.http://www.patientlinx.com/hivaids/hivtransmitted.cfmTo Thomas. If I had a disease such as HIV yes I would be first in line to get sterilized. To WRG: President Obama’s top science and technology advisor John P. Holdren co-authored a 1977 book in which he advocated the formation of a “planetary regime” that would use a “global police force” to enforce totalitarian measures of population control, including forced abortions, mass sterilization programs conducted via the food and water supply, as well as mandatory bodily implants that would prevent couples from having children. The concepts outlined in Holdren’s 1977 book Ecoscience, which he co-authored with close colleagues Paul Ehrlich and Anne Ehrlich, were so shocking that a February 2009 Front Page Magazine story on the subject was largely dismissed as being outlandish because people couldn’t bring themselves to believe that it could be true.TO SCOTT H. I am not saying we should kill people. Only sterilize them. more

I was recently tested and the results came back positive. I am very afraid because I have NEVER been tested for HIV before. Is it possible for you to get HIV from having PROTECTED ORAL? I also have other health issues like high blood pressure and a bulging disc. I've had STI's before but I've taken medicine for them and was cured of those illnesses. Resolved Question: I have no faith in my future..No hope of living.?

I'm 17 male, and..I don't know why..I just don't have any confidence of living past 19 or even 20..I want to raise a family..I want to marry, I want to explore and travel..But I just can't see my future... I don't have any goals! I don't know what I want to be..My health is average, or maybe even above average if you compare me to all the druggies that live in this city. The only real problem I have is my anxiety. I don't know..You want my opinion? I think I'm way too out of control..I keep jumping to conclusions. My anxiety ...It drives me insane..I worry constantly about things I don't have. Look, there is nothing wrong with me..But yet, I just don't see myself living to next year..I'm gonna die.. It's just all this...Crap in this world right now.. Diabetes HIV Cancer Strokes Heart attacks.. I'm scared..All this stuff scares me..There's all this stuff in the world right now, and it makes me scared to live..People keep telling me "You're crazy! You're going to be a father..Believe me" People keep reassuring me.. Now, I can't see the future! I'm just a kid! But I just have no faith at all in my future..So many things are wrong with this world..So many people suffer..I know I shouldn't care about them, because I can't control any of it..But it just feels like their suffering affects me.. I cured myself of a depression, of a traumatized state that I was in for 4 years. That was when I was 11. But now that I'm out, I find life so precious...And it's so precious to me that I worry so much about stuff I can't control..I wake up everyday, and every change I see in my body, I become scared.. I never acknowledged the wonders of life..Five months ago, if I didn't have the friend I have now..I would've cut my wrists..And I've tried...I would've been dead today if I hadn't cured it. Now that I'm awake..It's as if I had a near death experience..Now that I finally enjoy life, I feel as if it's too late to do it..That I messed up already, and now it's time for me to die..To pay for all the horrible things I did those years ago, when I hated this world. And I did..Back then, I would've wanted all of you dead. I hated this world so much..But things have changed now... What's wrong with me?Jiminy..People are ignorant. That's a fact. Deal with it. Just because I don't like the idea of death anymore, doesn't mean I wouldn't burn your house down if I lived there :) Come up with better insults too..You people are so boring nowadays..And where the hell do you get suburban from? You really have no idea what you just said, have you?Thanks..The only fear I have is that I'll die before I can say that I've lived my life. more

Resolved Question: So, if your god answers prayers..?

I just answered this one question from a guy who posted a link to another website where a Christian had written about his experiences. He had, supposedly, been cured of HIV. And he was sure that his god had done it. It was just a personal anecdote, it did not seem particularly reliable, and I basically have NO way to tell if it actually happened or not. But let's say, for the sake of argument, that it DID. Then I have a few questions: HOW do you Christians know that your god is behind such incidents? If someone who is ill recovers against all odds, shouldn't the default explanation be "wow! This was unexpected. We currently don't know what exactly happened, but maybe we'll someday be able to find a medical explanation."..? As opposed to: "ah! We don't know this yet! So from that I derive that not only must a god have done it, but MY god obviously did it!" ..Also: why would your god go around healing random people completely haphazardly and leave it at that? Why is it that the VAST majority of Christians who contract, say, HIV, ultimately end up developing AIDS and dying from it, just like people of other religions or no religion? Wouldn't it be pretty cruel to just ignore the prayers of all those OTHER Christians who die, and decide to just cure SOME people every once in a while, on a whim? Why not cure everyone who prayed? Please explain. :)@ Jade: Awww, thanks! :D *Lots of love for you too*. Joss Whedon: Yeah, sure, and I'm glad you liked it! =) more

Resolved Question: I have an STD, and I need help?

Hi, I was diagnosed with trichomoniasis, and I recieved treatment, but I am not feeling 100% better. I also began to deveop other non-sexual symptoms that have me worried. When I got tested, I was tested negative for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and bv, and I think UTI as well, and maybe yeast infection. Negative for everything I tested for other than trichomoniasis. The doc gave me four pills which he told me to take one per day for four days. Only on the fourth day did the burning urination and pain go away. But it still itches, ranging from no itch at all to a pretty strong itch. I have a slight burning feeling but not when I pee, and the whole area is kind of irritated, still. But it's a lot better than what it was, just not all the way better. I'm wondering if I took the medicine wrong? I read online that most trich treatment is taken all at once, even if it's four pills. Did the doctor just give me incorrect instructions? It was an ER doc, because I freaked out and went there, not having any insurance. Maybe he was wrong about how to take the medicine and I didn't get cured? Or could I have some other std or infection? I'm going to planned parenthood clinic tomorrow morning but I just wanted some opinions now. Also, I've had kind of a loss in appetite, and a bit of a sore throat and heartburn, in addition to dry mouth corners. It has me really worried that I was exposed to other diseases, such as HIV or Hepatitis. What do you think about that?? The person who infected me is a fairly new sex partner, who I have been sleeping with unprotected for about one to two months. I haven't had sex again since I was diagnosed. Any advice?Yes, I was given Flagyl. I didn't know that these side effects were from Flagyl but I guess it's possible, even though I completed the medication on Sunday and it's Friday. But you could be right. I guess they might tell me the same thing at the clinic tomorrow. Wish me luck. more

Resolved Question: Skeikh Abdul Majeed al-Zindani is a "scientist." Or is he really?

Hands up from those of you think that Zindani is a REAL scientist. Others of you who disagree, hands up, if you think that Zindani is a CONMAN. In the last few decades, Abdul Majeed al-Zindani has been accused of scientific fabrications. Several reliable sources have exposed him as fraudulent and unprofessional. Some of them are Muslims among properly qualified doctors and scientists. One such Muslim individual to have exposed al-Zindani's fraudulence was Dr. Jamil al-Mughales, the head of the Clinical Immunology Services of King Abdulaziz University. Al-Mughales has vehemently refuted all of al-Zindani's wild claims to a cure for AIDS/HIV. Al-Zindani claimed that he had "successfully" treated his AIDS/HIV patients who he said were now completely "cured". Contrarily, when al-Mughales went to examine Zindani's treated patients and inspect their blood tests, he was alarmed to discover the opposite of what Zindani claimed. Zindani's treated AIDS/HIV patients were still UNCURED of the intractable virus. Up to this day, more than half of Zindani's patients have all died still uncured of AIDS - and yet, Zindani has casually and callously told that they are all immediately "cured". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdul_Majeed_al-Zindani Scroll further down the webpage. Here is something really new to me. I have recently discovered that Abdul Majeed al-Zindani NEVER had diplomas or degrees before he ever opened up his own university: namely, Iman University in Sanaa, Yemen, founded in 1995. In fact, he had FAILED his biology and chemistry exams at Ain Shams University in Egypt. Hence, he had never attained any qualification from that university. Needless to say, his medieval university is unrecognized by other universities globally. Let's move on to his next fallacious "scientific" discoveries. Sheik Abd Al-Majid Al-Zindani had "proved" that all women were intellectually inferior to men. Oddly enough, his claim is contradicted by the Guiness Book of World's Records. In history, the highest IQ in the world is by a woman, namely Marilyn vos Savant. Her IQ measures 228. What about women scientists, inventors and Mathematicans over the centuries? And the hundreds of women Nobel Prize laurettes? Zindani has clearly overlooked their intelligence. He forgot renown women scientists: Marie Sklodowska Curie & Irene Joliot-Curie, Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin, Ada E. Yonath, Gerty Radnitz Cori, Rosalyn Sussman Yalow and the list goes on and on. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080617184235AA5p0sQ Women invented dishwashers, windshield wipers, computers, car parts, etc. Women also discovered micro-thin barium stearate film, Imuran, Zovirax, microelectrode, X-ray Crystallography, Kevlar (plastic 5 times stronger than steel), etc. Who ever invented first computer program? A woman, Ada Lovelace (b.1815 - d.1852). She was a hundred years ahead of her time. See her in links below: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_Lovelace http://www.sdsc.edu/ScienceWomen/lovelace.html What can Zindani now say about Ada Lovelace, the source sufficient to refute his "scientific" claims of women's "inferior" intelligence? Last thing, Zindani has claimed that he has a "scientific" proof that all women cannot talk and remember simultaneously. Now folks, you know what to think of that? Now, what you really think of Zindani as a scientist?@S. Sorry, I don't wish to read his plagiarized works. He had been stealing lots of others' ideas and passed them off as his own. He stole ideas and credits from Muslims and non-Muslims alike. I don't understand why you stick up for a conman like Zindani, a man who has no real academic qualifications. He is all talks and stolen discoveries. Several Muslim doctors and scientists had vehemently refuted his boastful, exagerated claims. more

Would all life on Earth be wiped out by asteroid strike, or nuclear warfare (doesn't matter how just life ending), going to mars, being able to time travel in time, cure cancer and/or aids/HIV, or hoverboards, or flying cars that are actually incorporated into general civilian use since they are already working somewhat. more

Resolved Question: Oral with Girlfriend who has HPV?

Hi First of all sorry for my bad english, I'm spanish. I hope you will understand my question. I'm in a relation since one year and a half with my girlfriend. We had sex without condoms and both have oral sex lot of times. Some months ago, my girlfriend told me that she has HPV type 16 (she is sure about that) since 5 years. She has been going to the doctor every 4 months because she has a small cervical dysplasia, that is not growing along all this time. The doctor said that is not necesary to make a surgery in order to quit it, but she has been in observation along all these years (like I said, every 4 months). The Doctor never told her about she should said that she has HPV to her boyfriend, she didnt know it was a STD. I was very accepting understanding and honestly felt like it was no big deal. But I started to research a bit, and I found, also in these forums, that HPV, specially the type she has (16) is linked to oral cancer. For example I've read in this study: http://www.natap.org/2007/HIV/051007_01.htm That those who tested positive to HPV-16, were 58 times more likely to have throat cancer. So, my question are: a) Should I stop giving oral sex to her? b) How can I know if I have HPV too? Which kind of proof do I have to pass? c) Should I use condoms always with her? d) Could you give me some kind of ballpark odds of performing oral sex on a woman carrying HPV 16 and then developing oral cancer? And penis cancer? e) Can she be cured of the HPV virus or she going to have it along all her life? f) It is possible that I have developed an inmunity to HPV 16 if my immune system was strong by the time the virus was in my body for the first time? g) Shoud I go (like she is doing) every 4 months (or whatever) to a Doctor in order he can check my mouth / throat (in order to avid oral cancer) and also my penis? i) What we can do and we can't in our sex relation? If are there other things I have to take in count, please, tell me. Thank you in advance, and sorry again for my bad english. more

Resolved Question: What is the function of this "envelope" that surrounds the HIV particle?

HIV has become one of the most feared diseases of the world community in the last few decades. Antiviral drugs have been developed that help treat the disease, although no cure has yet been found. Many pharmaceutical approaches are being investigated to battle the disease. Using what you know about how HIV infects human cells and the body's own cellular structure, answer the following questions in one or two well-developed paragraphs for each part of the question. One possible way to combat HIV invasion of the cell is to develop a drug which could destroy the "envelope" that surrounds the HIV particle. Explain the function of this envelope and how the drug would help stop HIV infection. Why has this approach NOT been used on people? Reverse transcriptase inhibitors are currently used in AIDS treatments. These drugs act by inhibiting reverse transcriptase activity. Explain the function of reverse transcriptase inhibitors and how this drug would help stop HIV infection. I couldn't find anything about this in my bio book, or on the internet so if you have any info to help me answer this question that would be great :) Thanks Barbiie Abreu more

Voting Question: If Magic Johnson were to take an HIV-AIDS test today would he still show up "positive" for the virus?

I know the virus went (away) but what does that mean, did the virus just go dormant or is it COMPLETELY gone? Im just a little confused because there are no traces of HIV in his blood now, but i know it can remain dormant....Is it just dormant or is it really no longer in his blood?? Or is it just not effecting him? Thank you! I have been very curious about this for a while so if anyone can even supply some history about him getting hiv and how he dealt with it and the possible causes for why he is "healthy" as of now....I may be wrong with some of my facts but i know he had HIV but something happened to where its either gone now or just went into dormancy....I would appreciate serious answers (i know southpark says that he cured himself because he has tons of money) lol thank you! more

Voting Question: If scientists found a cure to every disease tomorrow how would the world be affected?

It certainly would be a strange situation. No one would have to suffer horribly with cancer, malaria, HIV or any other horrible disease but the deaths to births ratio is already very lop sided and world population would explode inevitably speeding up the problems we are already facing such as loss of environment, diminishing food stocks, mass immigration and many more problems associated with over population. more

Voting Question: How is HIV infection prevented _after_ exposure?

The following is a quote from http://www.public.health.wa.gov.au/3/435/2/hivaids.pm 'What is the treatment for HIV/AIDS? If you are exposed to HIV, there is special treatment that can prevent you getting the infection if you see a doctor immediately.' It then goes on to explain than there isn't a cure for HIV, transmission from mother to child can be prevented etc etc. Most of the info I've found doing this assignment I knew already just from uni classes and general knowledge, but I didn't know about the hasty medical attention after exposure. I also can't find any info on _what_ this 'special treatment' is... Can anyone help??? more
