We have all heard that pets are not supposed to have "people food." But reality is, sometimes it happens, whether it be something falling on the floor when you're cooking dinner and the cat is quickly there, the kids sharing their treats with the dog, or even something being swiped off your plate when you aren't looking. moreEurand Announces Data On Switching Cystic Fibrosis Patients With...

I Have Chronic Pancreatitis Questions and Answers
Open Question: How to live with chronic pancreatitis?
So my mom has chronic pancreatitis and will be living in pain for the rest of her life since there is no cure. We've already established that fact. I want an answer from someone who knows what they're talking about and I want to know how to live a relatively pain free life and some solutions for many of the symptoms. Does anyone know how to deal with the symptoms of pancreatitis and how to maximize the time span between attacks? And does exercise truly help? Because my mom never eats anything and she has gained a ton of weight. Some of it is starting to come off because a lot of it was water retention, but nonetheless we have run out of options and now have to make the best with what we have. moreResolved Question: THIS IS MY COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY, IS IT READY TO BE SENT TO COLLEGES?
I would like to share with you something about my current medical situation. Ordinarily I would not do so, as I am an intensely private person, but I now accept that my physical limitations have quite possibly impacted my high school performance in a negative manner, and I feel that it is only fair that you have this information. Therefore, I am reluctantly going to allow access to information that I would never, otherwise, speak of. For the past several years, I have been afflicted by a physical situation that has sometimes interfered with my ability to focus, both in the classroom and out. I do not wish to be too specific about the symptoms of my disease, except to say that they are digestive in nature and sometimes require me to spend long periods of time in the Mens Room. Despite my terrible discomfort, I refused to accept that there might be something wrong with me, and would not seek treatment. I know now that I should have been less determined to suffer in silence and more willing to accept help. Finally, my parents insisted on bringing the matter to the attention of a physician. I was tested, over a period of several weeks, for colon cancer, Crohn’s Disease, intestinal obstructions, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, Heliocobacter pylori (commonly known as ulcer), celiac sprue (commonly known as wheat allergy), lactose intolerance, gallstones, bile duct stones, sclerosing cholangitis (the narrowing of the bile ducts), “Sphincter of Oddi” dysfunction and pancreatitis. You can imagine how relieved I was to learn that I had none of these terrible diseases. Finally, I received the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is sometimes known as spastic colon, nervous colon, nervous stomach, mucous colitis and spastic colitis, and is distinguished by abnormal bowel habits, such as diarrhea (loose stools), constipation or sometimes, as in my own case, both. It is well known to experts in this field that periods of stress can intensify the severity of IBS. I have certainly found my busy schedule of six honors/AP classes, Varsity field hockey, swimming and track teams, performing lead roles in three consecutive Spring Musicals, volunteering at the local animal shelter, tutoring at-risk children, and working three evenings a week plus all day Saturday at The Gap to be, at times, stressful, but of course it is impossible to say what has caused me to be afflicted with this very horrible syndrome. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS or spastic colon) is a diagnosis of exclusion. It is a functional bowel disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits in the absence of any detectable organic cause.[1] In some cases, the symptoms are relieved by bowel movements.[2] Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, or they may alternate (classified as IBS-D, IBS-C or IBS-A, respectively). IBS may begin after an infection (post-infectious, IBS-PI), a stressful life event, or onset of maturity without any other medical indicators. Although there is no cure for IBS, there are treatments that attempt to relieve symptoms, including dietary adjustments, medication and psychological interventions. Patient education and a good doctor-patient relationship are also important. Several conditions may present as IBS including celiac disease, Fructose malabsorption,[3] mild infections, parasitic infections like giardiasis, several inflammatory bowel diseases, functional chronic constipation, and chronic functional abdominal pain. In IBS, routine clinical tests yield no abnormalities, though the bowels may be more sensitive to certain stimuli, such as balloon insufflation testing. The exact cause of IBS is unknown. The most common theory is that IBS is a disorder of the interaction between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract, although there may also be abnormalities in the gut flora or the immune system. IBS does not lead to more serious conditions in most patients. But it is a source of chronic pain, fatigue, and other symptoms, and it increases a patient's medical costs, and contributes to work absenteeism. Researchers have reported that the high prevalence of IBS, in conjunction with increased costs produces a disease with a high societal cost. It is also regarded as a chronic illness and can dramatically affect the quality of a sufferer's life. In fact, doctors do not know what causes IBS, or why people who share my disease feel the need to have a bowel movement soon after eating, causing diarrhea, or why the prolonged spasm of the large intestine causes stool to stay in one area for too long and get dried out, resulting in small hard stools (constipation). As of today, palliative treatments are only in the experimental stage, and the hard truth is that there is no cure for IBS. It has been very difficult for me to accept this diagnosis at my young age moreResolved Question: Out of Fentanyl Patches, Afraid of withdrawal?
Ok so in March, I was hospitalized with pancreatitis. I had an ERCP done but since then I'm still in horrible pain everyday. Beginning of April, My family Dr put me on Fentanyl patches 50mcg/per hour and told me I have chronic Pancreatitis. I went back to the Dr today and she wrote out another script for the patches but now my insurance is not wanting to pay for it.They are saying I'm too young for these. I'm 22. I'm completely out of them! I'm so scared about withdrawal from this. My pain is serious, the patches are the only thing that are helping so I can function everyday. I have morphine and Dilaudid but they don't touch the pain. The insurance also stopped paying for my pancreatic enzyme that I need (2 pills, 3 times a day). What should I do? moreResolved Question: How do I not have withdrawls from narcotic pain medication?
I have chronic pancreatitis. I have been on heavy narcotic pain medication for over 8 months. I try to get off of them but have huge withdrawls, what can I do? moreResolved Question: THIS IS MY COLLEGE ESSAY, IS IT READY TO BE SENT TO COLLEGES?

I have a one year old Great Dane that has had chronic stomach issues for months now. Nothing I've tried has eliminated the problem and I've spent almost $1000 at the vet's and haven't found a solution that will work yet. His symptoms are intermittent loose stools, lack of appetite and weight loss. Some days he eats and poops normally and then he goes through phases for a few days where he doesn't want to eat much and wakes me up in the night to go out. I have wormed him (with Pyrantel pamoate) and treated him for whip worms (with Ivermectin) just in case, but he's had 3 negative fecal samples done at the vet's advice so I really don't think there is any chance that it is parasites. He had a blood work up that came back normal. Then the vet did another blood panel to test for Pancreatitis which also came back normal. The vet then said he thought it was Colitis and sold me Hill's WD prescription dog food. The first ingredient in this food is corn and it just made my dog poop 5 x more than he normally does and he seemed to lose more weight. I hate to act like I know better than a vet, but the WD formula is used for dogs that need to lose weight. My dog is already extremely skinny and not eating well. That doesn't make sense to me to give a skinny dog a diet formula. The vet said he was prescribing it because Colitis can be helped by a high fiber diet. Does anyone know of a good way to add fiber to the diet other than the prescription food? I have my dog on Blue Buffalo Salmon and Potato formula right now. He seems to have gained a pound or two back, but he's still having stomach issues. He's developing bumps on his muzzle also so now I'm wondering if he's having a reaction to something in that food. Does anyone have experience with Colitis or anything like this with their dogs? I'm open to any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks!@Shelter Puppies Rule - I did have him on a raw diet for 3-4 months. My other dogs did wonderfully on it, but my Dane still had stomach issues and it was difficult to get him to eat enough so he did not gain any weight. moreResolved Question: Very rude Dr. I dont know what I should do? Please read :)?
Ok, This is going to be long but I really need some answers. Im so confused at what Im supposed to do. I began seeing a GI doctor in Jan. due to food not digesting, weight loss, and constant vomiting. After a few tests he decided I have Gastroparesis ( basically my stomach is slow at digesting food) He ordered an Upper Endoscope which showed everything was fine. Before the test he was very rude to me. I told him I was in pain and had a history of pancreatitis. He basically yelled at me that he didn't think that I had that and immediately gave me the sedative to knock me out. When I woke up, He had wrote a script for Reglan and sent me home. The next morning I was in so much pain, my husband rushed me to the ER. They did blood work which reviled my liver enzymes were elevated. The CT scan came back normal. After 14 hours in the ER they admitted me. I was put on Dilaudid pain pump. I was in the hospital for 18 days. No tests were ever done. They assumed I was there for the pain medicine. I couldnt get the Drs to listen to me. ( BTW Im 22 years old, and before this, I had NEVER taken anything stronger than a tylenol for pain) They let me lay in the hospital for 18 days without passing a BM, I was so uncomfortable, I was miserable. Finally, I got transferred by ambulance to a different hospital. At the new hospital I had an ERCP procedure done and a stint placed into my pancreas ( They found I had a sphincter of the Oddi dysfunction). They put me on pancreas enzyme pills along with a list of other medicines. I started feeling great. Now this past week, the pain has returned. Its been 2 months since my ERCP was done. Im on a durasegic pain patch to help with the pancreatitis but its just not helping the pain. My husband took me to the ER, the Dr gave me dilaudid script and told me to return if it didnt control the pain. So on Sunday I returned to the ER. ( Also I havent been able to keep ANYTHING down, becoming very dehydrated and weak. Ive lost 35 pounds in 2 months) After 10 hours in the ER My GI Dr wouldnt admit me, he wanted to talk to me 1st. Basically he said " I dont know what to do with you, you cant sit in the hospital for weeks on pain medicine. We arent finding anything wrong. If you want to lay around all the time why dont we just put you into a nursing home" He then sent me home to suffer. Now heres the problem. This GI Dr is wanting to see me in 2 weeks. I really dont want to see him again. He didnt listen to me at my appointment in the 1st place. He made it seem like Ive been in chronic pain for 8 years which is not the case. I have had GERD for 8 years but not in pain. I just dont know what to do. Should I make an appointment and get crappy with him THEN switch Drs? Or should I just go and keep my mouth shut. moreResolved Question: Canine chronic pancreatitis diet?
Hey! I don't know whether to buy the prescription food from the vet or just cook my dog homemade meals.. I'm worried she won't be getting adequate vitamins or whatever. Does anyone have any recipes suitable for a dog with chronic pancreatitis? Thanks! moreResolved Question: what happens during and after pancreas removal?
hi guys... a little dismal today and i need some help so, my grandpa has chronic pancreatitis for the past month....... now he has finally went to a specialist and ...um well he has to have .. his pancreas out. so i need to know what will happen to him when he undergoes the surgery and what he will have to do after. (like what can he eat, what he can do) plus he already got his gallbladder out. any good detailed info or form a doctor's diagnosis would be great!! please pray 4 him! thanks you guys... ! oh p.s. he also has diabetes. moreResolved Question: If I have had my gallbladder removed?
I had my gallbladder removed a year ago now. I suffer from chronic pancreatitis and I STUPIDLY gave into a drink last night for the first time in 6 months. I can't stop being sick and have nothing in my system and its getting quite painful. I am just wondering can I produce bile without a gallbladder?Nah my surgeon didn't really explain much to be honest. All he said was that I will probably have irritable bowels for a while after and I signed the papers. It's his fault I have had more complications since the surgery. He left a bit of a stone by accident and I got acute pancreatitis 2 weeks later and since then my pancreas keeps getting inflamed. I have been very careful, eating a low fat diet, have lost 4 and a half stone and don't drink alcohol. I've felt so well that last night I though I would be ok (I only had half a pint but if was obviously too much and it is my own fault I'm blaming myself don't worry). My partner is currently at work so I have to wait until he gets home and see how I am because I can't leave my son. He always sleeps through so I'm 99% sure he won't wake up. I'm just going to have to wait and see how I am when my partner gets home. Thank you for all the help! moreResolved Question: Very dark brownish urine, what does it mean?
Hello, This morning, I had really dark urine, very dark brown, almost black. I don't know what's wrong. I have in infection in my shoulder, taking injections now Tatrum. I've had liver malfunctioning, gallstones and chronic pancreatitis last year. I don't know if this is related, but thought I'd mention it, I went for a blood test this morning, for Liver functions. Waiting for the results. If anyone has an idea what this might be please do tell. I am a 23-year female by the way. God bless,I have been drinking a lot of water, do I do not think it is dehydration. I already tested my liver functions, I am just waiting for the blood results. Hoope it is nothing serious! Could it be related to the shoulder infection though?Thank you all guys! I got my blood results back... Liver functions are all normal except for the Bilirubin... and MCH in the CBC (Complete Blood Count test) MCH: 32.2 pg (Normal range: 27.00-31.00) Total Bilirubin: 1.10 mg/dL (Normal range: Up to 1.00) Direct Bilirubin: 0.40 mg/dL (Normal range: Up tp 0.25) I've been googling this, and got many results with Gilbert's syndrome... I was born with jaundince and was kept at hospital for three days. I don't know if this is by any means related. I guess I will wait until I finish my shoulder infection shots (3 more left) and I'll check mu urine afterwards. moreResolved Question: anyone else have a cat with chronic pancreatitis or diabetes?
She gets steroid shots bi-weekly to keep down the vomiting but still vomits bile and blood. We give her painkiller meds every day. We are "maintaining" her, trying to keep her comfortable. She had been eating well but has become picky. We decided on no more heroic treatments (hydration, force feeding) because she becomes so frantic, whether we do it or the vet. Anyone else have these problems? How do you handle them? Any idea of the time prognosis or what to watch for? Vet says she may slide into diabetes. What's the outlook for that? Please don't say, see your vet, we're there every week. I am trying to take care of her as best I can. moreVoting Question: chronic pancreatitis?
I have been dealing with Chronic for about 9 months now. I have had all the tests and what not and the doctor's still have no idea why it it happening. I am in the hospital at least 3 days a week. Lately I have been having serious pain in my kidney area along with the attacks. With all the research and talking to the docs about it I am at a loss. Seems like they have no idea what to do. I know this can be dangerous and life changing. Anyone know life expectancies. I am only 34 years old with no other problems. I don't drink, no gall bladder problems or anything like that. Any info would be greatfully helpful. moreResolved Question: Pancreatitis, why so much gas?
Chronic pancreatitis diagnosed fifteen months ago, Dx changed a few weeks later to acute pancreatitis. Subsequently zero alcohol (previously drank two drinks each evening), stools more frequent and often liquid or very soft. The main problem is a vast amount of flatus. Is this the result of pancreatitis or should I be looking for something else? I take Ultrase 2 tid with meals, plus Welchol, Zetia, and Niaspan for lipid control. Pain was never severe, have had none for many months. Why so much gas, and can I reduce it? moreResolved Question: Question about supportive care for an older dog.?
My dog is 13 year old Sheltie mix? We plant to take him to the vet for supportive care where they Monitor him for a few days over night. What they do is stick IV his arms to stop the vomiting and diarrhea he has been having. They said he has Chronic low Grade pancreatitis. Also he has a mass on his spleen and an enlarged lymph node. So after we do the supportive care we plan to get a second opinion at another vet. As the one we take him to know seems to only care about money and wont tell us what is wrong. The vet we plan on getting the second opinion has many great reviews? And they said we can most likely make payments the vet we take him to now does not offer payment plans and wants all the money upfront. So my question is did anyone do this for their dog or cat and did it turn out ok did it make your dog or cat back to normal? He is not used to being in a cage what could i do to help him so he does not cry all night. We are taking him to the vet i asked a question stop with the mean answers. We do not plan on euthanizing him untill we know he is truly suffering he seems happy. What i mean is the vet would put him in a cage and he is not used to it. moreResolved Question: Where can we go just for a pain killer shot?
My wife has a chronic pancreatitis and she gets pain attack once in a month and she just needs a pain killer shot. do we have to go to hospital emergency all the time for it? I took her to doctor and she told us they dont do pain killer shot in the office and we need to go to hospital for it. I took my wife to emergency and they charged me for a lot of thing. I explained them the situation but they dont do only pain killer shot. Where can we go just for a pain killer shot? I am a foreign student her and i dont know how everything works. I see Urgent Care Centers. can they do it without going thru all that hospital goes? Thanksif I go to a pharmacy and explain them the situation, do they have a right to do pain killer shot? moreResolved Question: I am looking for either a Female Golden Retriever, Golden Yellow Lab or a cross between the two.?
OK where to begin. My doctor/s have given me a prescription for a Dog to help me with my PTSD, and Chronic depression. I think it is safe to say I have been through the ringer. I really do not like to talk about it and avoid the questions I get from others once they find out what I did when I worked for the government. Reoccurring nightmares, Cold Sweats and more meds than a frickin pharmacy. I love dogs and it seems like its the only time I feel normal. I have been through just about every "program" from Pets for Vets to CCI (Canine Companions for independence). From there I went to shelters and there I found one dog that I just fell in love with. He was a Black Lab/Pit Bull cross (though I could never see the pit in him personality wise or physicaly). 2 Weeks later he stopped drinking water and after a week later and $1200 worth of vet visits I found out he had Chronic Severe pancreatitis. He died a week later. A local small animal rescue heard about my situation (how I have no idea) and offered to help find me a healthy dog. After about a month a searching we found a pure breed Black Lab he is 18 months and has a great disposition. Now with my Dr.'s prescription it qualified me to have most of the costs of the dog icluding vet bills insurance, a small stipend for food and about 20 dollars for incidentals such as chew bones, Kennels and brushes. Anyhow, part of the deal with me is that I need to find a dog that's in good health and is expected to stay that way and is no older than 3/half years old. No aggressive pure breeds such as Rottweilers , Pit Bulls Doberman etc... Now each dog I get I have a 25 day period to find out if the would be dog is for me and that it is in good health. During that time if I find that I can a dog that has no pre existing conditions and fits in with my life style the state will reimburse me at the end of each fiscal year. Well with the dog I have now I thought I had a home run. Although it was not specifically the color or sex I was looking for he was defiantly in good health and his and my personality fit fairly well. A few bugs but I don't need perfection. Well now I have had him for about 17 days and last night I discovered he is epileptic. F#@%! I am looking left and right but not much luck. I did find a breeder that offered me one of his pups but I would have to pay for shipping. There was no way I could pay that much. So now I have Thor (the dog that has epilepsy, and yesterday at about 9PM on March 17th 2010 somehow slipped out of his harness and got hit by a car sorry folks its hard not to laugh) as far as the injury's he sustained part of hit little tail was cut up pretty bad and he got his bell rung pretty good other than that he is just fine not so much as a slight concusion, aside from his previous condition. Left one hell of a dent on the bumper of the car! (NOW THAT'S A HARD FRICKIN HEAD!!!). I am trying to keep it light but it is tearing me up inside. Look, I know that whoever you are you don't know me and I know that this world owes us nothing, so I am not expecting a miracle. I am just hoping somewhere out there that there is a Dog out there for me. All my life I have wanted a Golden Retriever/Golden,Yellow Lab Hybrid. If I had not been injured in the line of duty I would be out there making this dream a reality. I am also hoping for a non spayed female so that I will not have to start looking again. I would maybe breed her twice at most keep one of the pups so I wont have to look again. Again I would be grateful for a healthy retriever, but I figure if I ask I just may receive. If my dream were to be realized I would pay it forward for as long as I can. Thank you Sincerely moreVoting Question: Chronic Pancreatitis life expectancy?
My 19year old son is being diagnosed for CP, unfortunately it seems that he may have had this for a few years unbeknowing to the Doctors that are treating him for his Chron's. He has Autism, AD/HD, IBS, Asthma and Crohn's. He is ticking all the boxes for the symptoms of CP and is having tests i.e. breath test, faeces test, CT scan and blood tests. He is extremely unwell and has been prescribed amtriptolyene and buscopan which is not helping at all. Is there ANYONE out there that her a minute ray of light for me. So, I have chronic pancreatitis. I'm not a drinker (I got it from gallstones) and I haven't touched a drink since I got sick, but I am still having problems. So I have to take enzymes to eat and I am insulin dependant (I wasn't a diabetic before the pancreatitis) The doctors tried to put a stent in my pancreatic duct (5 or 6 times) but it didn't work and the latest MRI shows the duct is more dilated than before, and my psuedocyst is larger, and more "diffuse" I asked My gastroenterologist what that means and he didn't know. So anyway I have seen local docs, a specialist and a surgeon the last time I saw the surgeon he said there was nothing he could do right now, and they wouldn't do surgery unless I was in terrible pain (I have some pain but nothing to get all cut up about) When the specialist saw my last MRI he SUGGESTED I see the Surgeon again, but he's just going to say the same thing he said last time, since my pain is bearable. And my insurance company doesn't want me to see that surgeon. Actually that guy was kinda a jerk anyway, so I don't care about that so much, but the specialist's office was supposed to be finding a surgeon in-network for me, but I haven't heard back. Anyway, obviously I have to research this illness on the web, because these doctors are all crazy and tell me something different every time I see them. I realize the people on YAHOO aren't a bunch of MD's but I was hoping maybe someone else that HAS Pancreatitis or knows about this kind of stuff can steer me in the direction of GOOD info on the web. My husband has liver damage and chronic pancreatitis. He drinks and is yet to stop. I'm doing all I can for him...going to al anon..etc..but that is another story. My focus right now are these bloody lesions (they look like dime to quarter-sized bloody scabby (some scabbing over and some fresh) all over his legs and some on his arms and chest. His doc is out of town and only one available to us today is a nurse practioner...whom is good but I feel safer with his doc. I'm just very curious as to what might be causing this. Could liver disease and/or pancreatitis cause this? Otherwise, I don't know what else it could be. He didn't tell me about this till today. He says he's had them for about three days. Thank you. I hope my description is clear.I wanted to add a bit more info here. After looking online a bit, I think a better description for this is ulcer or wound. moreVoting Question: Pepcid to cat slight heart murmur?
Hello Usually I would call my vet for something like this, but seeing it's Family day, the vet is not in today and I would like some feedback... So long story short, my cat (11 years old, indoors only) has been through a lot recently, such as chronic pancreatitis. She's slowly getting better, but she still isn't her usual self yet. She has days when she seems somewhat fine, but also days like today when she seems depressed, nauseous, and not eating. The vet says her pancreas is still inflamed and that she has a pseudo-cyst on it that may be aggravating her symptoms. We're giving her metoclopramide (injection), codeine (a gel we put on her ear) every day, and some digestive enzymes (powder) whenever we can. But even though we're giving her metoclopramide for the nausea and vomiting, she still continues to vomit. It's usually bile, or clear saliva-like vomit, or frothy white stuff, rarely any food. Before it used to be once a day, but the past day it's been more often (4~6 times a day). When we brought this up before, the vet didn't seem overly concerned, as long as her temperature is normal (which it has been). SO I haven't tried Pepcid AC yet for the vomiting, and would like to try it (seeing that the metoclopramide doesn't seem to be doing much at all). I know it's 1/4 tablet, 10 mg once/twice a day for a cat.... The only problem is that my cat has a low-grade heart murmur. I read on some sites that Pepcid may be bad to give if the cat/person has a heart rhythm problem. If anyone has any information, or have given Pepcid to a cat who has a heart murmur with success, I would be grateful! Thanks for your time. moreResolved Question: My daughter who is 4 and a half months pregnant is having gallbladder pain?

I am a 15 year old male. I have normal hair - it isnt curly just normal - it is brown. My Grandad who i strongly resemble who had the same hair as me had a receeding hairline in his mid 20's My Father who strongly resembles my grandad and whom i strongly resemble had a receedding hairline quite badly from his early 20's I am 15 and i have no signs of it yet - but is it likely or even definete i will get one? Seen as me, my dad and grandad all have the same hair and look simialr etc. One thing though is my Grandad was a very heavy drinker and died as a result of it in his mid 30's. My father too was a very strong drinker from an early age and has suffered Chronic Pancreatitis as a result (but has not died) Both started drinking at an early age - could this have been the cause of their Receeding Hairlines. Particularly with my dad - we learnt in school tht a receeding hairline could be worsened or brought on by severe illness - and Chronic Pancreatitis is a very severe illness - my Dad had this at 21 - and at the age of 23 his Receeding hairline was much worse than my grandads when he was 23. So Will i inherit it? Was theirs caused by drinking and illness? Also is it likely their will be a cure or prevention for a receeding hairline - is their now? Thanks moreResolved Question: What sort of health issues does/did your miniature Schnauzer have?
I'm just trying to see what other owners have dealt with along the line of health issues with their miniature Schnauzers. Not Standards or others, but purebred minis. After 9.5 years, we just lost our sweet girl overnight 11/30-12/1. What's killing me the most is that the vet said she was doing better and would be coming home the next day. Well, she came home, but to be buried. She was purchased at a pet shop. I KNOW, so the last thing I need is someone finger-wagging and saying how it's "Wrong". Trust me, I KNOW. The only regret I don't have is of her temperament/disposition. Nobody would ever have found a sweeter, better-natured dog. She was playful and active up until 3 days before she died. We as a family are heartbroken and while we knew we did everything we could for her, it still doesn't seem like enough. What's killing me the most is that we were told how she "perked up" on the IV this time, and had there been even a cautionary "You never know what's going to happen," maybe we could have somewhat mentally prepared ourselves for this. But she died alone, overnight, in a cage at the vet's. I can only hope she didn't know what was happening and that she wasn't afraid. This is what's making me walk the floors at night, and why Xanax is the only reason I'm functioning right now. We never crate-trained her. From her first night that we brought her home, she slept with us. She meant the world to us and the void in our home now is unspeakable. She seemed to be prone to just about any and every ailment that this breed is prone to. The pancreatitis is what started the beginning of the worse, when 2 Christmas Eves ago, she was rushed to the vet and put on an IV. She basically blew her pancreas out and 13 months ago, was diagnosed as a diabetic. She was getting 2 shots a day of Humulin. Other: She had 2 corneal ulcers (same eye), one requiring a (successful) grid keratotomy. Just before her death, evidence of the beginning of cataracts (a slight "clouding") had begun in her eyes. She had several lesser eye infections from time to time. Chronic ear infections. Skin allergies, worst at change of seasons.Figured I'd add due to an answer citing this breed as a popular one...I had my first miniature Schnauzer in 1974. He got hit by a car at the age of 6, and never had any health problems. But I don't want it thought that this is some sort of popularity thing or "fad" breed with me.@Melly Belly...thank you very much. Big hugs to your little guy and I pray he stays in good health. My girl didn't have cysts so much as, I don't want to call them pimples but they would sometimes come to a head. Other times they -felt- like cysts but would break. And if your guy licks his front paws a lot, that could be a signal of other skin allergies. Hers were more often than not soaked.@Schnauzer Mom..I don't know how you did it but there's a special place in heaven for people like you. I've had people suggest for me to rescue younger adults, but I can't. I can't deal with more heartbreak on top of this. You are a very special person and thank you for answering my question. I'll keep a good thought for yours and wish them stable health. moreResolved Question: Could my brother's symptoms be chronic pancreatitis?
Long story short...my brother is an alcoholic. He is living with my husband and I temporarily so I'm seeing firsthand his actions and the consequences. To sum it up, I know my brother was hospitalized shortly with acute pancreatitis last year...and from what I can gather from docs, his liver functions tests have come back very high ever since. He was told to stop drinking but never did. Back then, he suffered from pain in his stomach and had chronic nausea and vomiting. Now, however, he is having chronic nausea and vomiting several times a week but says he feels absolutely NO pain. I have read that as pancreatitis progresses, the pain can actually subside. Anyone have experience with this as being true? He refuses to go to a doc..although this evening I told him he must if he wants to stay with us for the time we agreed upon. I think he is finally willing to go now but it wouldn't surprise me if he bailed on that plan and moved out. By the way, I have pleaded with him to stop drinking and get some help but his denial is unbelievable. He actually spends a day vomiting and then goes right back to drinking the following day and actually WONDERS why he continues to vomit. THAT is how deeply in denial this man has fallen. Please share your knowledge and experience if you have it (regarding the pancreatitis with no pain symptoms). My husband, ironically, is recovering from a similar path in his life (with drinking) but is doing great currently so I feel like I've been there already once and really don't enjoy seeing someone else in my life go down the same road. I've been in the ER/Hospital quite a few times since August (chronic pancreatitis). They're always quick to give me pain medicine, which I'm very thankful for haha, but I was wondering if the way my body reacts is normal. And I don't know if it matters, but I'm 18/female, don't drink or smoke, and my weight is pretty average. Last night I got dilaudid, which I had had before with no reaction, but this time my throat felt like it was about to swell shut and it was getting really hard to breathe. I could barely talk and I felt like my mouth, nose, and eyes were burning. My legs went numb for about 30 seconds and the muscles in my arms cramped up for a minute or two. Since I was having trouble talking, I wrote that it was making me feel weird on a piece of paper and showed the doctor, who asked me to explain it more. I told him what I wrote above (throat felt like it was swelling, hard to breathe, burning, etc.) and he said it was just a normal side effect, but if it got worse to tell him. I'm not sure he fully understood how bad it was making me feel since I wasn't able to express it vocally. The sensation went away in about 10 minutes, but every time I would get another dose it would be a little worse than the time before. I know my doctor said it was normal, but idk. Does this sound like an allergic reaction or is it normal and just uncomfortable? moreResolved Question: what KIND of diabetes?
I know this is a question for my endocrinologist, but I'm not due to see him for a little bit, and I am just curious. I was diagnosed with diabetes over a year ago, but no one ever told me if it was type 1 or 2 or anything. I WAS told at one point BEFORE I developed diabetes that I was prediabetic and in danger of developing Type 2, because I have PCOS. But, that's not how I got diabetes! I had a very bad case of Pancreatitis that did damage to my pancreas. As a result, I have chronic pancreatitis, and I have to take pancreatic enzymes (creon) and insulin (lantis) and my sugar is not all that well controlled. I already have neuropathy and vision changes. I suspect that clinically speaking I have both types 1 &2?!? I read this is possible and sometimes referred to as "double diabetes" but i cannot find too much on the subject. Again, I am going to ask my doctor, but in the mean time I was hoping someone who is knowledgeable about this subject could explain it to me? hello, I have been suffering with pancreatitis since last year and i would like to have at least one more child in the near future. but i am worried. i have read a bunch of negative things about women who became pregnant with this illness. some ended up 10 times worse. some died. some said *oh ive had no problems so far but im only 9 weeks. etc. then later on around 4 months they were saying * oh my gosh its gotten horrible. im miserable and starving and can barely eat due to the pain*.. I dont know what to do!!! it is not my only health problem. but the Dr. even asked me if i was ready for another baby cuz 4 whatever reason he wants me to have another one. i also have mild endomitriosis and ovarian cyst. he said *that will get better if u get pregnant* but ive read alot on women saying they got worse.. what should I do? moreResolved Question: IBS or Chronic Pacreatitis?
For 10 to 11 years now, I've had these infrequent abdominal attacks that last up to 3 days per episode and always after eating, usually shortly after lunch. The abdominal pain I feel is what I imagine it would be to get shot and have a burning slug in my gut. It causes me to double over, I get the chills, and at times, feel as though I'm about to vomit. I do have a family history where at least one immediate family member had their gall bladded removed due to pancreatitis. My doctor insistsit's IBS. An Upper GI about 8 years ago revealed nothing. Some other test that involved my eating irradiated scrambled eggs revealed no problesm. An ultrasound during a rushed ER visit, while I was having an attack, did not reveal gall stones. So, they told me I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. But I refuse to believe that. My pain, again, feels like a pinball has been shot into my gut and the pain will not go away. I have been experiencing stomach pain, abdominal bloating, constipation, belching, and back pain for over a week now. It started after I got sick from drinking too much alcohol. She tested my urine for a kidney infection b/c of the back pain but there was nothing. If I feel down below my rib cage on my back and it is tender to the touch. My kidney area hurts badly and it feels like a burning sensation. I have been reading online and think I may have Pancreatitis? Is this consistent with Pancreatitis? I also have read about Fibromyalgia as well b/c these autoimmune diseases seem to occur together, but I just cant get myself to think that this is just a muscoskeletal pain problem especially since its mainly in the area where my kidneys are located. I know this isnt for medical advise but I have been posting on other sites and have gotten no where. I have an appt with a GI dr next week so I am hoping i can get some answers. My father was very ill. He had chronic pancreatitis, copd, diabetes, and has been living with these conditions for the last 8 years with it starting from the pancreatitis. He has been married to my stepmom for only 10 of these 8 years and it is very obvious that he has been a burden for her. He has been in and out of the hospital for the last couple of weeks but my main concern is the events that happened 3 days before his death (my father was only 47). My stepmother kept making comments about how she wanted them to just stop treating his diabetes and remove his oxygen help (he'd been living with for 4 years). I explained to her that that would be murder it is the hospitals obligation to continue to treat what they had been treating before. My father was still eating on his own, going to the bathroom, and drinking on his own but, was heavily sedated. In his last day of life in the hospital there was talk of my step mom wanting to set him up with hospice and was asking questions about what she could do (take him off oxygen, stop checking his sugar etc). Before she left for the night she requested they give my father something for the pain (pancreatitis) and they gave him a dose of morphine. As soon as she left his stats started dropping quickly. His o2 saturation was at 33 and pulse had dropped to 67. The nurse came in checked on him and was going to clean him up cause he had soiled himself. I accepted as did my sister that it was close (not realizing the morphine could be the cause) and when they moved him around it woke him up enough to pick up all his sats. I called my step mom and told her what happened and she came back to the hospital. We waited a whole 7 hours with no change he was very sedated and non responsive from the drugs but stats were fine and showing no signs of discomfort or pain. The nurse had told me too that she thought it was the morphine that sent him over the edge. So after 7 hours of nothing...my step mom talked to the nurse even though my dad was having no pain and asked for more morphine. She also told the nurse not to treat his sugar that was getting dangerously low. She didn't even let the nurse take it but, when the nurse left she took it and it was 68. I explained how I was very uncomfortable with giving him more pain meds and not treating the sugar but was ignored. She started talking about taking him off his regular oxygen mask too and I was very much against it so she did not. This was about 2am when the first dose of pain meds was given (with no sign of pain) somehow an hour later when more family arrived he woke up and started talking to everyone and was awake and alert for about 10 min and my step mom after that ordered MORE morphine "for pain" that he wasn't having (he also had just had a dose an hour before) that was about 4am his breathing started to get slower after that but he was relaxed. The nurse kept coming in and asking my step mom if she was ready for "that" twice...finally about 530 am my step mom said yes. I immediatley said WHAT IS THAT! and she said oh, your dad is getting a little anxious so its some anti anxitey meds. ( still he was not moving, moaning, his stats were not showing a sign of pain, he was not gasping for air just breathing very slow) he passed an hour later. I need answers! I truly feel that this was not ethical nor legal. She was ofcourse being his wife his medical power of attorney. However I didn't think it gave her the right to play GOD so to speak. Morphine is very risky for copd patients from what i've read and apparently she was "friends" or the nurse was "a customer" of hers and even joked so are you going to let me cut in line now? I believe she came in and did say I got a doctors ok to give pain meds every 30 min. as needed which i thought was weird cause my father was not in pain?? And, if the doctor knew the effects of the pain meds on a copd paitient why would he allow such a high dosage to be given so frequently? I mentioned today I wanted a copy of his medical records and she got very defensive and said "what do you want those for"? and I said I just strongly feel like something is wrong and she said well "i don't want to talk about this right now!" 4 doses of a powerful narcotic and a dose of a sedative/"anti anxiety" to be administered within 3 hours seems excessive for someone sleeping? moreVoting Question: I am worried I have developed chronic pancreatits?

My 5 year old stepson has recently been diagnosed with an attachment disorder, finally. It took my husband 2 years of denial and avoidance but SS is in therapy. I have an 8 year old daughter and hubby and I have 6 month old twins. The problems of my stepson weren't so obvious until I was already pregnant or I would have never brought children into this situation. My twins are sick with strep because SS had it and coughed into their faces when he thought nobody was looking. He also spits and sometimes urinates on everything when he thinks we aren't looking. We recently found this out through setting up hidden cameras. I'm in the position where I'm afraid my children's safety may become an issue. My SS has no remorse, empathy, compassion and is very manipulating and has already started telling other adults that I've been saying mean things to him, which I have not. I feel like it's only a matter of time before he tells someone I hit him or worse and child services takes my kids. His life has been a sad affair of daycares, babysitters, grandparents who encourage and indulge his bad behavior and a horrible 50/50 custody schedule of bouncing around every 2-3 days since he was 12 months. I've had him since he was 2 and I've done everything in my power to give him the love and compassion and attention he missed out on earlier and still. I mean no more to him than a perfect stranger. Actually he's more affectionate and charming with strangers than us. His mother is blaming this on me as are my in-laws who all refuse to believe that he isn't perfect. The therapist told hubby and I that his mother is the key and not much can be done to help him without her cooperation. We know we won't get it. I'm at the point where I think I might have to move out every time he is here. I don't want it to get to that point but I'm afraid for my children. He is constantly sick and has given my babies serious illnesses twice. I love my husband and I know my SS problems are from his parents and grandparents idiotic parenting of him. (Grandparents have more control than the parents at times and are constantly undermining my husband). It isn't his fault he's like this but the stress of this situation is causing me a lot of problems. I have chronic pancreatitis, non-specific colitis and disc problems in my neck and deal with chronic pain. The current situation is causing me flare ups in my health conditions and has made it harder to deal with the pain. My children don't deserve this, but then neither does my stepson. Is moving out too extreme? I feel I'm the only one who will adequately protect my children. I can't leave them alone with my husband any more when SS is here because he is still in some denial himself. He coughed on the babies while I was at physical therapy and hubby just told him not to get too close and that's all, then he did it again. (hidden camera proof) I had no idea that all this would happen when we got married, I thought SS was a very mellow nice little boy. But my hubby isn't doing enough. Nobody is and I'm the only reason SS is in therapy. What is the right thing to do here? I'm leaning toward leaving while SS is here to protect my kids. Please help me. And nobody please pass nasty judgements on me you have no idea what a kid with an attachment disorder is like until you've lived with one. I only mentioned a small fraction of the things he does.Sorry this is so long but it's complicated and I didn't want to leave out crucial information. Before my pregnancy, I had lots of quality one on one time with him where we did fun things, I held him, loved on him but it made no difference. The therapist said that because his mom is in the picture only what she does will make a difference. I'm simply spread too thin with my babies at the moment to leave the house and devote special time to him.Another thing, one on one time with him now is not in my best interest since I may have to prove that I wasn't mistreating him. If there's ALWAYS another adult around when he and I are together, then it will be easier for me to prove that I didn't do the things to him that he said I did. moreResolved Question: Will i have a deformed pancreas too?
Baiscally my Dad has Chronic Pancreatitis. He wasn't born with it to his and our knowledge. Whilst he was ill he was told that his Pancreas was deformed (it hand't formed properly when he was born) But my Dad was unaware of this until he was 22. He only seemed to get any pancreas trouble after 8 years of heavy drinking. This is why everyone agrees it WAS NOT hereditary pancreatitis - and that although his pancreas was deformed - it still did work. But from the age of 14 he drank VERY heavily. I have heard he even used to regularly drinka 1.5l bottle of Whisky to himself - and that his friend couldnt keep up with his drinking. At the age of 22 he became very ill and was diagnosed with Chronic Pancreatitis. He is fine now and has had many operations - but as survived and hasn't had an attack for 5 years. So I have 2 questions: 1. Is it likely i will inherit my Dads deformed pancreas and 2. If i HAVE got a deformed pancreas - if i drink will the same happen to me - e.g. if i were to regularly go out drinking with friends when i am older like in nightclubs (i mean like getting a little drunk) would i be ok so long as i dont do EXTREME drinking like my dad did like drinkin 1.5l of whisky to himself on the same night? Thanks - please be honest Also if i went to the doctor would i be able to request an MRI to find out if my oancreas is deformed or would i be rejected? Please answer all 3 questions (I am 14 years old and male by the way - and i have been drunk before and been fine) moreResolved Question: Does this sound like Chronic Pancreatitis?
For the past week or so I have had a mild burning/pulling sensation on the left side of my abdomen right underneath my rib cage. The pain comes and goes and seems to wrap around to my back. It also feels like it's "full" on that side of my abdomen. A little history about me: Used to drink pretty heavily for 5-6 years. 32 years old/female No other symptoms of chronic pancreatitis Never had an acute attack of pancreatitis I think I'm mainly worried b/c of my previous acohol use. If it's not chronic pancreatitis, what do you think it could be? moreResolved Question: teen with pancreatitis? ?
So I am 15 and I was diagnosed with pancreatitis 2 years ago and have 6 attacks since then that have each required hospitalization that have lasted about a week each. I have had 4 MRI's done and will be getting an ERCP done soon. I have never drank alcohol and my doctors do not know the cause. There is permanent scarring of the pancreas and I am not sure whether I have chronic or acute pancreatitis. I had genetic testing done which revealed a small mutation of Cystic Fibrosis that predisposes me to pancreatitis. One doctor also told me it is a possibility that my pancreas will eventually burn out and I would become diabetic and insulin dependent. I am not asking for professional advice I am just wondering if anybody has had anything like this and if you think I am at risk for pancreatic cancer. Can pancreatic cancer be treated and prevented if the pancreas is monitored regularly? Any help/advice would be great thanks.oh and also I remember once the attending doctor at the hospital telling me to not have ANY pain medication at all and refused to give me anything. Is this normal even though other doctors have been fine with giving me morphine and demerol?Sonograms have also shown sludge in the gall bladder and very tiny stones but everybody has said they are too small to cause pancreatitis. Could this be a factor in why I keep getting attacks? moreI Have Chronic Pancreatitis Links
