Pancreatitis Herbal Questions and Answers
Voting Question: How can I continue to abuse alcohol without doing further damage to my liver?
So I was hospitalized last week with pancreatitis and diabetic ketoacidosis after collapsing at my sister's wedding reception. Anyway, the doctors ran some tests and it turns out that I have elevated liver enzymes and show signs of advanced liver disease.
The doctor advised that I quit drinking and even referred me to several addiction treatment facilities. The thing is, not drinking isn't an option. Drinking to excess is a very important part of my lifestyle and my professional image. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there a safer way to drink? Are there any multivitamins or herbal supplements I can take to lessen the damaging effects of alcohol on my liver?
Drinking is very important to me and if it comes down to it I'll choose drinking over my own health and well-being. I just hope it doesn't have to come to that.

moreResolved Question: boyfriend has acute pancreatitis. Looking for herbal alternatives.?
has acute pancreatits. When I met him he had mild abdominal pains every few days only once a day. They increased in the past year to the point where he has pain every day, several times and the pain has intensified since he had his last real bad attack 3 weeks ago and went to the hospital for 3 days. The dr. ran tests, said his blood pressure was real high. and his pancreas was inflammed greatly. he was throwing up bile the night before and the next day when he went into the hospital. Dr. said they could not do anything else other than ease the pain and run tests and they sent him home in pain with pain pills which put him to sleep most of the day. He was a mild drinker. And has vowed to stop drinking after this attack. So that is good. He has twisted intestines and had his gallbladder removed when he was first diagnosed with pancreatitis. He does not have diabetes or pancreatitis cancer. He does have bouts of weakness, feeling tired, has hot/cold spells at night as if his blood pressure is fluctuating. Sometimes he has a hard time catching his breath and it scares me because I worry he is going to die, but I place a fan in front of his face and he gets better after awhile and breathes normally. During the day he sweats alot when it is hot and needs lot of air to stay cool. I hear that ceder berrys are good for the pancreas. Lipase is good, but I am concerned about that because if pancreatitis secretes lipase which eats at the pancreas, why would one want to take that. Is there something to calm down the pancreas and keep it from digesting itself. I am looking for natural herbal supplements that work.
I got him some pancre-ease tablets and something I cant think of the name but it helps regulate the blood pressure. Just got some cedar berry tablets. I read that garlic tablets are also good for blood pressure. Any other ideas or helpful tips would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to do all that I can to help him in a natural healthy way.
moreResolved Question: Dieticians - Internists - Is kwashiorkor a possible symptom of our poor diet - too much white flour / corn syr?
I think many Americans are starving themselves because of their daily reliance on white flour for sustenance, whether rich or poor. Does white flour inhibit good digestion of other more protein rich foods? (Look at all the protruding bellies.) I'm looking at something that indicated that in a report as follows:
"Conditions listing Kwashiorkor as a symptom may also be potential underlying causes of Kwashiorkor. Our database lists the following as having Kwashiorkor as a symptom of that condition:

Protein-calorie malnutrition: Causes and incidence
(Professional Guide to Diseases (Eighth Edition))
Both kwashiorkor (edematous PCM) and marasmus (nonedematous PCM) are common in underdeveloped countries and in areas in which dietary amino acid
content is insufficient to satisfy growth requirements. Kwashiorkor typically occurs at about age 1, after infants are weaned from breast milk to a protein-deficient diet of starchy gruels or sugar water, but it can develop at any time during the formative years. Marasmus affects infants ages 6 to 18 months as a result of breast-feeding failure, or a debilitating condition such as chronic diarrhea.
In industrialized countries, PCM may occur secondary to chronic metabolic disease that decreases protein and calorie intake or absorption, or trauma that increases protein and calorie requirements. In the United States, PCM is estimated to occur to some extent in 50% of elderly people in nursing homes. Those who aren’t allowed anything by mouth for an extended period are at high risk of developing PCM. Conditions that increase protein-calorie requirements include severe burns and injuries, systemic infections, and cancer (accounts for the largest group of hospitalized patients with PCM). Conditions that cause defective utilization of nutrients include malabsorption syndrome, short-bowel syndrome, and Crohn’s disease.

moreResolved Question: Pancreatitis, don't quite fit into any causitive category, but a bit in some ... Any GI's out there?
6 weeks ago, I went to my PD with what I thought was severe heartburn. I went to pharm. and he suggested Pepcid. I took it, no luck in an hour (like he said). I called and asked PD how long Pepcid takes to take it away, she said an hour, I said it's been 4 hours and I was in agony. Severe abdominal pain, some vomiting, low grade fever. I had what I thought was the flu for 3 days prior (no pain, just didn't feel well, diarr and low grade fever. She said come in. She took a blood test ... Highly elevated Amylase and Lipase, somewhat elevated ALT, AST. Had weekly blood tests since then, and it's been going down. Nearly normal Amylase, still 3 times normal Lipase (which is much lower than it was... nearly 3000).
I read the following on internet as far as causes: 1) Alcoholism: "Alcohol is the leading culprit. Usually, it takes several years of heavy drinking -- such as a 12-pack of beer of every day." I drink, but not more than 3-4 drinks per night, 3-4 nights per week (if that!) however, I had a life altering even a few weeks before attack and did drink a bit more (nightly, maybe 4 drinks), but no 'binge drinking'. Rarely drunk more than 4 times in the last year, no hangovers. 2) Gallstones: never had a symptom. 3) heridedary: nope, nobody. 4) Meds: rare cases of Lamictal and Ativan have been reported "after market, and reported on 'compassionate please' cases. I am on both. (BTW, Lamictal was raised from 150 mg to 200 mg 1 wk before attack, and due to stress, went from 1 ativan per day to 2-3). 5) no traumas.
The pain was severe (I have little tolerance for pain), but not enough that I felt ER was necessary. Nor did she. I was still walking around and doing what shopping I had to do, etc. OTC painkillers helped.
Background: 48 yrs old, F, somewhat healthy diet. I feel fine now. Having another blood test Monday. Also have history of ovarian problems.... recently, cysts, fibroids. Any known relation? Any herbal/alternative cures or remedies? Is this permanent? She says never another drink of alcohol, not even cough syrup. Is that true? Even socially, a couple here and there? Due to my two year history of drugs (antidepressants, Lamictal, Xanax, Ativan ... all prescribed by Dr's), I have also taken Milk Thistle and Alpha Lipoic Acid to counteract the med's effect on liver.
Just can't find enough general information on this on the internet. Just doom, gloom, not so great mortality rates, and a future of horror to live with ... kidney dialysis, heart failure, liver failure, extreme pain, narcotic addiction, surgeries.
Please advise... Thank you and God bless.
moreResolved Question: herbal shisha and acute pancreatitis?
I have acute pancreatitis, and I've researched the internet and it seems like things to avoid with pancreatitis are alcohol, tobacco products (because of nicotine. nicotine is what damages the pancreas), and fatty foods.
So if I wanted to smoke hookah, would it be okay to smoke herbal shisha (tobacco free, nicotine free, and tar free)?
